    I think that's pretty likely.

Adding on to that, I'd say Kylo Ren is actually going to take Anakin's lightsaber, as a relic of his grandfather's. The cool thing about that is we might get to see a new saber's construction (Rey's) and kyber crystal "bleeding" (Ren's) in episode IX.

It would be odd form a story perspective for Anakin's lightsaber to call to Rey, and then have her not use it.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the staff saber idea. From a practical standpoint, any fight scenes with a weapon like that would look very choreographed, and for these movies I prefer a more raw feel for the combat sequences.

I understand the allure of unusual types of lightsabers, but I think the classic single bladed design works best.

That's a pretty good point. I suppose it's possible as well that if Kylo Ren doesn't take the saber as his inheritance, it could still be broken. The part of the saber that "calls" to Rey is undoubtedly the kyber crystal inside, and she could use that crystal to construct her new saber.

This actually works pretty well on two fronts, considering possible trends in this series.

    1) It continues the possible balance between Rey's legacy as a Jedi and her familial legacy. If she truly is not a Skywalker/Solo/Kenobi/etc and is simply a gifted young girl with no significant relatives, then she'll have a sort of split identity. On the one hand, she's an incredibly important force user with much of future of the Jedi (and the Galaxy at large) on her back- on the other, she is very much her own person, with a history apart from the Jedi and questions about her own history. Having the crystal from such a prominent weapon be built into something of her own design would be a neat parallel for this- though I can see how fans would be furious if that saber gets "cannibalized" in these films, and may draw their own parallels about the state of the ST.

    2) It could continue the trend, as well, of the possibility that the Stand Alone films help work a little bit of exposition for the ST. We have speculated in The Cantina that various parts of Rogue One are helping to set the stage for things that we might see in Episode VIII and IX. Well, Kyber crystals are immensely important in Rogue One, as well. It's possible this was done to sort of prime the audience for what is to come in TLJ.

The Jedi of the old you speak of. What about an out numbered Jedi (ehemm, Kylo, Snoke, Knights of Ren)?? Darth Maul had a double bladed knowing he would most likely be defending himself against more then 1 Jedi during the Old Republic. Why shouldn't Rey against more Dark side users??

Academic question: Do we know if a double bladed saber is powered by two crystals? One for each blade?
Considering the name of the next episode, who's to say she becomes a Jedi at all?

According to Wookiepedia, Maul's used FOUR synthetic crystals to power his as it was two lightsabers welded together...so in theory I suppose it is going to take multiple if Rey wants a lightstaff...lightstaff? Lightbo?

    Anyways.

I know where she can get a blue one!

I am going to guess it requires two crystal's as thever light can onlycome out of one end otherwise if the light part can come out of both ends of the crystal then you are going to get a load of accidents when the student's turn there lightsavers on for the first Time.

If have used light to refer to the wepon part of the lightsaber

I'd like to see Rey build and use her own lightsaber, double or single, but I sense that won't happen until IX, and she'll just use Anakin's lightsaber in VIII.

To be fair, though, the synthetic crystals used in Maul's saber are almost certainly different than the real thing- I'd assume not as powerful.

The important takeaway being that Maul’s ‘double-bladed’ rig is nothing more than two separate sabers stuck together. So, logically, you’d need at least two crystals to do the same thing. Though, honestly, the writers can do whatever they want.

Maybe, Force forbid, Luke passes (becoming more powerful than we can possibly imagine) and leaves his green saber. Green and blue double blade?

If she builds her own lightsaber (and she most likely will,) then she may find her Kyber Crystal inside the temple on Ahch-to, similarly to Ezra?

Cool idea. That would at least justify the significance of a hidden temple - there’s still maybe Kybers that haven’t been looted yet.

Totally! I don't really get why people are so narrow minded about this like Jedi or Luke don't know where to find crystals. Especially on a magical world with the FIRST jedi temple like Ahch-too.

Well, if the Empire was desperate for these crystals as we’ve been led to believe, and they have control of the Jedi temple on Coruscant, with its stupidly massive archives - then they may have found a healthy portion of the temples and stripped them out already. Assuming Jedi temples are typically built near Kyber deposites, that’s what I would do. Finding a crystal the old fashioned way then would be pretty tricky. That’s a lot of assumptions though.

As an aside, do we know what happened to Ilum? There were crap loads of Kybers there, yeah? Eh, I’m sure it’ll turn up at some point.

The Empire strip mined it, heavily, for kyber crystals. Ahsoka went there (in her novel) and saw where parts of the planet's core had been exposed from over mining.

Yeah, the Empire totally knew about Ilum. Makes sense, it was kind of the main Jedi spots for getting crystals. Even if the Jedi Council was pretty "hush hush" about where they got crystals from, it's very likely Vader knew from his time as a youngling.

But Ach-To could be different. Kyber isn't exclusive to Ilum, and Ach-To seems really off the beaten path. If there ever was Kyber there (and the presence of a temple suggests the possibility) it's probably still there.

If Rey ain't a Skywalker she shouldn't use Anakins old lightsaber imho.

She should construct her own. A doubled bladed lightsaber would be really awesome.

we gotta have a big screen light saber construction at some stage... surely?

with some John Williams love, what an epic scene that would be !

Rey to use Anakins saber during 8. Kylo to take it from her before the end of 8.. forcing her to make her own at the beginning of ep9.

i truly think she will end up with a double blade. She has grown up using a staff, and my pessimistic mind knows that there is an opportunity to get a new iconic weapon into the star wars universe (merchandising)

    Ben
to discard red for blue during ep9. i know lots of you don't want him redeemed, but i think that having that saber will be what helps turn him.
when he places the saber next to the vader mask... big things will start to happen.
