Well, now. Hasn't the Big 3 played bit roles in TFA? At least the Twins did.

No. TFA was about finding Luke Skywalker because he is the only hope for the Resistance. The bad guys are essentially lead by Kylo Ren, Vader's grandson. The Resistance is lead by Leia.

All Skywalker's. All pivotal. All centre stage.

The reason the name “Skywalker” is synonymous with the Saga isn’t because of fan’s projections and opinions: Lucasfilm themselves refers to it [I - IX] as the Skywalker Saga.

    I’m still, honestly, having a tough time seeing a X. I don’t even want an Episode X.

I think there needs to be some finality and closure to the Skywalker Saga, specifically. Sure, if Rey’s a Skywalker (or not) she can turn up elsewhere, but does it have to be called Episode X to have these characters?

If the story is very much, say, about Rey, Finn, Poe, etc., hypothetically learning under Luke’s tutelage to all become Jedi or join some other society, does it need to be called Episode X? I don’t think it does.

A trilogy of trilogies is poetic and enjoyable. There’s a beginning and an end. It’s what George Lucas sold to Disney, and more importantly, I would ask: what would an entry in the Skywalker Saga be without the legendary maestro John Williams composing?

We talk about how we want the galaxy to be opened up, but the Skywalker Saga is very much about the Skywalkers (as it should be), and more specifically, is a testament to George’s work and creation, and all links directly to the “main character” of the franchise: Anakin Skywalker.

I’m having a tough time understanding the arguments for X, XI and XII without the Skywalkers; why not just call it something else?

I did mention earlier how a standalone film would be ok but not a new trilogy ;)

    They simply can't do it.

Even Rey' no one would be to much, so she is Skywalker in this or another way.

Perhaps, I was thinking if new trilogy have exploded on new markets (BRICK) they could maybe try risk with beheading Skywalkers,

But Star Wars stays anchored in "old world" considering its main public , and that means people who were born and grown with Skywalker sagas.

So, experimets like Rey" No one" are nice when one is making a "noir" film, but not continuous multibillion dollar Blockbuster project of industrial scale, because what counts here is brand, and Skywalkers are brand.

I think the sequel trilogy is Disney transitioning away from the Skywalkers. Possibly there is a condition in the contract that Lucas stipulates that the OT characters receive a fitting end. People talk about the saga movies as the Skywalker saga, but I believe Episodes I - VI are the true Skywalker saga (as they fall under the umbrella of George Lucas). Any saga movies past IX can have Rey, Finn, and Poe as the central characters, with Chewie and The Falcon as support.

They would lost to many fans by non-Skawalker saga, except if it is pre-prequel Saga, let say Old Republic saga.

Let say a saga that explains Snoke.

So you and others like you won't be watching RJ's non-Skywalker trilogy, I take it?

I think it will be retro-trilogy, perhaps explaining Snoke, Old Republic, the Force division...anyway it would be much more fun than again New Finn and Rey, Chewy( he lives 300 years anyway) and eternal droids, it would became episodic like TV serries.

I am sure Disney has intellectual power to know they must make it asymetric-which means now is a time for retro trilogy.

    Huh?

Again, RJ is going to make a completely new trilogy with none of the known characters from the Skywalker story. You just agreed with @Darth Basin The Greatest that without a Skywalker around it won't be right and people won't watch it.

So will you or won't you watch the new Star Wars saga?

I will watch it, you do understand its childish talk do you?

it will be called Star Wars, afteral , at least I think.

but the risk of discarding it as a true Star Wars, to the level of schism, will be coinsiderable.

    So you'll watch a Skywalker-less saga. Great.

So what's the problem with killing off the Skywalker's then?

Also, there is zero risk in not having the Skywalker's around again. Having someone with that surname in a film doesn't mean it will be any good. What makes the films great is the story, not the names. Every film is a risk and any film can fall flat on its face if it is badly made. Skywalker characters don't eliminate that risk whatsoever.

The Star Wars title will pull people to the cinema. Great films will keep them there. RJ is going to try and do that with his trilogy - without the Skywalker family. You will all watch it and likely be embarrassed by the posts in this thread.

If it is learned that Rey is not "part of the family" she will be pulled into the family enough that her presence continues the Skywalker Saga.

    a) The Skywalkers are main characters of the main saga. To carry that saga on, they'll need Skywalker characters.
    b) BS - you can't say the Star wars Universe is big and support stories without skywalkers, then claim they all have to be dead for other stories to be told.
    c) In their saga....yes.

There is no benefit to Disney or Lucasfilm to do this. IX will end in such a way that they can move forward with X.

Because then they can't make Episode X in 5-10-15-20 years....whenever they want to tape into that to create hype and interest in the property.

They're already planning a Skywalker-less trilogy. Clearly, they don't see the need for them to sell multiple Star Wars films. All Star Wars fans will watch it and new fans will be drawn in by the, hopefully, exciting new characters.

Huh? I said that if the Skywalker's live on then they will be central to any big story that comes after that. You could get away with a low key standalone, but not a trilogy that has any scale or importance. They're too powerful to be left on the sidelines.

Imagine a trilogy set in the future. Some bad guy is plotting to take over the galaxy. If this person is not a Skywalker, then wouldn't the heroes call upon the remaining Skywalker, the most powerful being in the galaxy, to help them out?

They're making a Skywalker-less trilogy. There is no risk in moving forward without them. The name doesn't mean the films will be any good. The greater risk is regurgitating the same family story over and over.

The "property" is Star Wars, not the Skywalker's. They've already created new characters who may or may not be Skywalker's, that people love and would watch more films with them in. I don't understand this obsession with the Skywalker name. The story that relates to Vader will be finished by the time Ben Solo helps Rey defeat Snoke.

regardless of what Rian is doing there is still a chance that another chapter(s) of the Skywalker saga after episode 9 could take place. there is no evidence at this time that suggests that the Skywalker saga will end at episode 9, nor is there evidence to suggest that another Skywalker saga trilogy couldn't or won't be planned 10-20 years down the road.

both those for and against another Skywalker trilogy are weighing in with their emotions, not any reasonable argument based on evidence. what Rian is doing could be the "fluff" trilogy between Skywalker saga trilogies for all we know.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 14, 2017, Original Post Date: Nov 14, 2017 ---
to be honest, i agree with @Canadian Ronin that letting the Skywalker saga close would probably be a silly idea, if only because they'd be leaving a lot of money on the table.

what if they were to do a trilogy about someone like Cade Skywalker, some distant ancestor of the Skywalkers? they'd still be able to bill that as part of the Skywalker saga and still have some flexibility to create something not as hackneyed as a repeat of past trilogies.

as for other stories being stifled due to the existence of a Skywalker somewhere in the galaxy, that's silly. the galaxy is a big place and there's a lot of room for stories without mentioning whatever Skywalker happens to be alive. it's not like every Star Wars story pre-TPM focuses on Yoda, the strongest of the Jedi up until that point, right?

We got Rogue One and we're getting Solo, we knew they were ok with/planning Skywalker-less films. That has nothing to do with the main saga.

Rebels is a perfect example of you can tell a story without the skywalkers. Your lack of imaginatino doesn't = fact. They in no way need to include a Skywalker to make a story important and meaningful. By your logic Captain America shouldn't be able to headline his own movies either. Neither should Batman. They should always just call Superman or Thor right?

Why does a trilogy need to involve someone taking over the entire galaxy? Who says the heroes know Rey or have the ability to summon her etc...

I didn't mention risk, I asked you what hte benefit it is. What is the benefit in limiting their possibilities moving forward? Why try to shift this point from benefit to risk? And the risk is regurgitating the same story? So why do you think the story hast o be about someone taking over the galaxy?

The story was over when Luke and Vader defeated emperor but......

exactly, Rebels is a great example of Star Wars without a feature Skywalker. Solo will be another film that will showcase a Skywalker-less cast, and R1 only used Vader as a campy cameo. one could argue that yes, the Skywalkers are especially important and helped to kick start the stories of R1 and Rebels, but ultimately they're not immediate players and play very little part of the story aside from being part of the back drop.

Again, a small standalone story isn't the same as an epic trilogy. And as you point out, the Skywalker family is so important they invade even these smaller films. Now, if RJ goes forward in time, and I admit that's an if, then in my view the Skywalker family must end else they will dominate his trilogy or be conspicuous in their absence.

What's more, even before this announcement it struck me that in order to preserve the identity, relevance and quality of the Skywalker story, it must end with IX. Dragging out more stories in an attempt to connect them to Vader will lead the franchise into a very dull, predicatble place whilst diluting that which came before.
