If Rey were to have a romantic interest in this trilogy, who should it be?

I think there's plenty of ways to create these things. Anakin, by all accounts SHOULD have been irredeemable.
He's essentially committed THREE genocides by the time Luke redeems him. It's just the difference in how we receive the story.

If you see that in the proper order, Vader/Anakin is irredeemable.

well, no, he's not. he's just as redeemable as ever.
the PT actually changed nothing. we already knew Vader was a heinous mass-murderer.
he did those things. he always did those things and we always knew it and we watched him do them even in the OT.

the point of redemption is that it transcends the worst of the worst.

there's no cut-off or expiration date or point of no return on redemption.
that's Yoda and Kenobi speaking (and Kylo Ren even now: "it's too late").

Luke knew better. that's the message of Star Wars.

they are now ~ don't we want to see them find their own redemption in this? their legacy can still be saved.

So Hitler, would be redeemable by Star Wars standards?

Eh. I get that to a point but in all honesty, there's a limit.

I agree with you - the search for love is a universal theme, deeply human and very relatable for many people. I'll go even a step further and say that, after TFA, this trilogy needs to start aknowledging that people have impulses and instincts and, generally, they tend to be attracted to other people with whom they may like to have sexual intercourse. People like to Blast, therefore this story needs a romance - agreed.
But not in Rey's storyline, it doesn't. There are other characters who can carry the romance line.

You can have exactly all the stuff you mentioned - immense conflict, hightened stakes, tension and so on - but with other characters. And I'll show you why after your next quote

TESB is precisely the reason why I say it would bog down Rey's story. Think about her arc: the general trajectory, as of right now, seems to move along similar lines to OT-Luke's. Now, think about Luke's storyline in Empire and try to imagine if he had to carry the romantic side as well - let's forget the siblings thing for a moment, and imagine he and Leia traded the same sparks, in ESB. His storyline would've ended up crammed AF, while Han would've been left with next to nothing to do.

In the OT, we only had Luke, Leia and Han - in this new trilogy, we have Rey, Finn, Poe and now, apparently, Kelly Marie Tran. If Rey ends up carrying the Love Story as well as The Heroine's Journey, what are all these other characters going to do?
And there's another consideration about Empire (and I'm in the camp that consider it the best of the series): Lucas and Kasdan wrote the romance between Han & Leia not only as "trading sparks" - they had it climax (I love you/I know). As a result, Han and Leia's relationship doesn't have a lot of business, in Jedi: it's established that they love each other, as soon as Han is rescued they are togheter, the end (sometimes, I suspect this is the very reason why Lucas wrote Luke and Leia to be siblings: to manifacture that single moment of tension when Han thinks there's something going on between Luke and Leia, otherwise there would've been nothing, to their love story, after the first act).

Of course - as you said - most of it relies on how it's played. Although, storytelling considerations aside, I can't really see how could they play ReyLo without passing the idea that violence and abuse are acceptable in a relation and can be forgived - but that is a whole different argument.

and yet Star Wars gave us Darth Vader and it redeemed Anakin Skywalker.
this happened. it's canon. nothing in the PT changes that.

i choose to believe that Luke's journey has greater purpose--that his goodness, his faith, and his strength of heart have meaning.
otherwise, really, what's the point? cool laser swords and things that go boom? good guys killing bad guys?
i mean...that's okay, but it's selling the story rather short, i think.

but as you just said, it's all in how it's played. you just described the whole of Han and Leia's relationship as having "little business" ~ it occupies scarcely any screentime and yet manages to be complete and satisfying and we buy into it whole-heartedly (regardless of the motives for it being there).

if Rey's relationship with Ren (or Ben) is the crux of the ST (and it might be--romantic or no, they share a yin yan which may be the hinge on which the whole galaxy hangs), then an added level of attraction (one-sided, two-sided, three-sided with BB-8) shouldn't have to bog anything down. and again, it doesn't even need to be consummated in any sense of the word. love/hate/attraction/repulsion ~ it's the stuff of high drama; we seem to agree on that.

so there's no "rules" here about what needs to happen in this story.
as long as it's a good story, it literally could be anything.

Okay, I still don't know wether I like the idea of RenBen as a love interest for Rey. But this picture kinda makes me liking it:

Me too. The sad thing is 4 me is that if Rey is not a Skywalker, Darth Emo haves to reproduce for any future Skywalkers & hopefully not w/ Rey.

Only because of the order released. if it were released Ep 1 - 6, I think the redemption story is completely different.
It's much more of a grey area, but we had already redeemed Vader before we knew EVERYTHING.

    That's my point.

it changes nothing. there is no grey area here. killing is killing. children, his wife, soldiers, innocent citizens, his own staff. it's all killing and it's all terrible.
you're going back and saying suddenly: oh wait, that's a whole different kind of killing and therefore i change my mind.
so then what the heck is Luke doing then extending his hand? offering forgiveness?
what's the point of the movie if Darth Vader is irredeemable? you tell me.

He's redeemed to us because he really doesn't DO that much evil in ep 4-6. We never got to really HATE him like we will with Kylo.
The worst thing Vader does in ep 4-6 is kill Obi-Wan.

In the PT he kills children, slaughters a race and partakes in the extermination of Jedi.

The point of the movie is fun. And selling toys. But that's a different argument.
The story is about Luke and his accepting and finding his father. He's redeemed to Luke.
But as you learn in all the novels, he is to NO ONE ELSE.

    no.
    he's redeemed to himself.

    that's all that matters.
not the specifics of his crimes, or the order in which we learn them. not us, not anyone in the galaxy.
just Anakin Skywalker through the faith of his son.

so let's just agree to disagree ~ we obviously interpret the saga through vastly different lenses ~ hahaha

I don't think comparisons between Kylo and Vader really work out when the latter winds up dead. Why do people imagine it was written that way?

As to whether Rey has a romantic story line or not, I'm not that fussed but I'd probably prefer if she didn't. Then again I'm not that invested in her story anyway at the moment.

And I don't know about anyone else but my objection to "Reylo" lies on two main issues:

    1. It robs the ST of the only interesting villain it currently possesses. Snoke? Some vague dark lord unconnected to the main cast. Hux? a tinpot dictator who once more is unconnected to the main cast. Phasma? Don't....just don't. It is exactly because Kylo is so conflicted and so related to the main cast that he makes a more intriguing villain The conflict between him and the other main characters has the most potential for drama.
    2. I know that romance often plays a role in most films/stories in differing levels of importance but "Reylo" makes romance the centre stage of the ST, it would dominate the story and frankly I don't need that s**t. Anakin and Padme was painful enough but thankfully Obi Wan manage to carry them, I don't think the ST has a character that could do that. Please go read Romeo and Juliet or watch a host of other romance orientated films, I like my science fantasy to be mostly concerned with science fantasy.
