Thanks for repeating your subjective opinions about story choices again, but the narrative for the 3 films is clear whether or not we like it. Me pointing out the obvious doesn't make me dismissive of opinions. It just means I'm pointing out the obvious. Rey thought she was a nobody until it was revealed she wasn't a nobody. Luke was the son of heroic Jedi until it was revealed he was the son of a monster. What people assumed between these films is how this stuff works. It doesn't mean the story is incoherent.

One last note, I haven't accused @Veronica of anything here.

Whatever. My point flew over your head.

Do you ever stop and reread what you've written? Funny how my opinions are 'subjective' while you, on the other hand, are simply 'pointing out the obvious.' Ooooookay. :)

Star Wars is written for kids so it's by design it's not difficult to follow. We're not discussing a complicated plot point like the ghost theory for Tár. I guess anyone can find something incoherent, but in this case it's hyperbole for the sake of making an argument sound stronger.
Yep, I highly recommend it. It might have help you when you brought up Veronica in your last reply to me. That mistake could have been avoided. :)

Hardly. Rey's parentage or at least her ties to Palpatine were set up from the start. From the name change of Kira to Rey (which is Spanish for King and a name that would be synonymous with power) before shooting began, to Daisy being coached and instructed to speak with an RP British accent a sign of the aristocracy in the SWU. She could not be Luke, Leia or Hans daughter given the fact that JJ said that her parents were not in TFA. And the biggest and most obvious clue was the fact that her theme is a variation on his.

There are people who ferreted that she was a Palpatine from hints dropped in TFA.

And no she could not be a Kenobi given the fact that Maz told her that the belonging she wanted was ahead of her not behind her.

Even ignoring the fact that Rian Johnson said in an interview that Rey's parentage was not settled in TLJ. The whole Rey 'nobody' was either based on incomplete information. Kylo just told her what he had seen inside her head without knowing the full context. Much the same way that Rey thought that Ben would turn.
Even Rey's saying that her parents were nobody was right because that's what she would have remembered from being with them and on the run as a small child.

The title is a pun. The Rise of the Skywalker family.

Rey from her worthlessness and to full
Ben from his mistakes to be a hero
Luke facing his fears and rectifying his mistakes
Leia's name being redeemed after she was forced from the Senate and ignored/ostracized due to her ties to Darth Vader and warnings that the FO were dangerous.

Maybe LF was expecting too much from some fans and a general audience.

Unfortunately I have to disappoint you. It was NOT set up and Daisy Ridley herself confirmed that in 2020.

For TFA they actually thought of Rey being a Kenobi, but JJ ultimately dropped revealing her heritage and decided that someone else has to decide who Rey's parents are. Rian Johnson then made her a "nobody". Daisy Ridley also confirmed "Rey Nobody" was set in stone from that point on. Only by JJ returning everything changed again.

In the end TFA set her up to be everyone and no one at the same time. That's just how JJ's mystery boxes work.

But she does not say that Rey Nobody was "set in stone" at any point. She was acknowledging where the last movie left it. Which is not the same thing.

I'm fairly sure actors are never given assurances about things being set in stone in the SW universe.

Fair enough, but it doesn't change the point of my argument. There was no clear plan for Rey's parentage. This is all what I'm saying. I'm just annoyed by people claiming this and that was set up from the very beginning. It obviously wasn't. Yes, this hasn't to be a bad thing, but that topic is a completely different discussion.

This is true, but at the same time they left enough wiggle room to go in any direction they wanted in the last film. The Last Jedi wasn't the final word and Rian Johnson even admitted that. Rey Palpatine was a theory out there after The Force Awakens, it just wasn't very popular since most theories seemed to be about her being Han/Leia or Luke's kid.

Exactly. Everyone and their grandma had a theory about Rey. There were even silly theories like Rey being Shmi Skywalker. Eventually one of those million theories had to be right. That's the genius of JJ- he makes you speculate. But as soon as you know the trick behind the mystery boxes, it can become kinda frustrating.

But let's go back to the actual topic. I'm really looking forward to seeing Rey grow as a Jedi master. Seeing her wield her yellow lightsaber will be fun.

But let's face it. Rey being Rey Nobody was an interesting idea to acknowledge and dabble with. But it was never going to be a desired outcome. You can't conclude a trilogy and a nine part saga by revealing that the shocking enigma about Rey's significant parentage is that there is no secret and there are no parents of significance.

I'm more annoyed at the lingering idea that knowing and seeing that things were all planned out the way they transpire on screen is important. It's not.

I would have prefered The Last Jedi answer to any of the options that were laid out and much more than being the daughter of a clone. She's as much the granddaughter of Palpatine as Rex is the son of Jango Fett.

What if her nobody "filthy junk trader" father happened to be a clone of Jango? Would that make it more preferable, or less?

Rex is a son of Jango, in effect.

It's important if the goal is a quality product.

It's like saying throwing up a new building without any blueprints isn't a big deal. It is.

A movie trilogy isn't a building. And blueprints have the complete and exact dimensions of every facet of the finished construction.

If we took the OT as an example then it somehow became a triple steepled cathedral built from the blueprint for a single domed church. In fact none of the SW saga's individual movies was built from a blueprint.

And no, the goal of a quality movie is not achieved by assuring the audience that everything they saw, especially key relationships between the main characters, had been planned out and set in place before the beginning of the trilogy.

After 30 years, I was looking forward to ALL of that with Luke Skywalker and whatever his New Jedi Order was, in the Sequel trilogy.... but Disney decided that Master Luke's sequel story should be cautionary tale; like his father, before him. When Luke force-suicided, a part of my childhood went with him.

Bastilla Shan's yellow double bladed lightsaber far more interesting to me 20 years ago than Rey's is today.... perhaps it's because Disney was incapable of coming up with something more intriguing than Rey unwittingly possessing the lightsaber staff of Darth Plagueis. So yeah, the whole yellow blade thing at the end did nothing for me.... I had been there and done that. I'm glad you are excited though, reminds me of myself 20 sum years ago, right before Lucas & cronies jacked up the turn in the last Prequel.:p

Each to their own. Rey Nobody was the best outcome for me. A no one becomes someone. That's pretty much THE story of all stories.
But in the end her being a Palpatine didn't matter much, because she took the name of Skywalker anyway. This would have been the conclusion of the "Nobody Theory" as well.

This whole parentage speculation was unneeded IMO though. Only because TESB had a twist, everyone thinks Star Wars is about twists...

I never was a fan of the old EU Luke and his academy. But I can't deny that I would love to see a show featuring Luke and Ben Solo.

My point is that 9 times out of 10, the Man (or Woman) with a Plan is going to win the prize, whether we're talking films, TV shows, business ventures...or, as I said before, building construction.
Yes, originally SW was a stand-alone film. And yes, many creative people played key roles in the final cut that was released back in 1977. But the screenplay was written by George and built around his vision. To say it was 'steepled' rather than 'domed' doesn't give GL anywhere near the credit he deserves.

Secondly, once Star Wars became a hit and there was high public demand for more, Lucas put together a plan for a film trilogy and mapped out how they would play out. Did some things change over the course of the productions? Of course. But the major narrative thread running through Film 2 and Film 3 of the OTs came out of the vision George had for Film 1.

The problem with the STs was too many cooks and an owner who didn't keep them all in line by saying "HOLD IT, GUYS---THIS is The Menu!"
