Conduct a poll of Star Wars fans and ask them this question: Which SW film ending was more satisfying to you?
    A) Return of the Jedi
    B) The Rise of Skywalker
    C) They were both equally good.
    D) They were both equally bad.

If it was a honest poll, it certainly wouldn't be unanimous but I'd wager (A) would, far and away, be the top answer.

@Darth Derringer The topic of the Sequel Trilogy's overall cohesiveness is just one more arena where the facts directly contradict and invalidate the perception, so polling means nothing.

Shifting topics, I came across a series of essays the other day that outlined, analyzed, and explained how Rey's story correlates to and/or simultaneously differs from the Hero's Journey as described by Joseph Campbell, and the symmetry and symbolism that the author identified in all three films makes me even more regretful that I personally pushed back as hard as I did against The Force Awakens during its development and after its release.

    BTW, here are said essays:

    What 'facts'?

An audience's reaction to a film is always subjective. Good or bad, the public's response wins the day.

People didn't like Ghostbusters 2 but still called for a sequel for decades. There seems to be confusion online with some fans that because TROS wasn't received well (based on reviews and audience scores) then Rey isn't popular. I understand this reasoning because people are prisoners of the moment and make snap judgments without looking at the full context, but that reasoning is flawed. If Rey was hated then the audience scores (the one the industry uses, not silly internet polls) for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi would have been bad, both films were received well.

Most of the general audience loved Rey. Disney and Lucasfilm know this and that's why so much time and effort is going into getting this film right.

Honestly, it's hard to separate a film's star from the popularity of the film itself. In some cases, a big time movie star can -- through his/her inherent charm and 'likeability' -- make a stinker movie into something worth watching. But each situation is different; it depends on the movie star and the movie.

I enjoyed the character of Rey and Daisey's performance in TFA. While I throw-up in my mouth a little bit at the knowledge of her heritage, I'll be in the audience for the character's return. I just hope I leave the theatre more pumped-up about Rey than when I entered. Great stories have the power to do that!

I was thinking- what if Rey tries to pass herself off as a Skywalker blood relative? Her calling herself Skywalker could and should definitely backfire one day.
Rey getting outed as a Palpatine could make her lose her power and seat in the new Jedi Order. Maybe Finn has to take over then.

Rey being outed as an offspring of Palpatine is also a nice parallel to Leia being outed as Vader's daughter.

It's rumored the Lindelof draft was to take place much further in the future. Rey would be an old woman. That's an interesting idea, but I can see why Lucasfilm went this direction if they have Daisy Ridley and Boyega.. Again, I can't say this enough... this franchise needs to get past the fixation on bloodlines. Why would the rest of the galaxy care if Rey calls herself a Skywalker? The Chiss call their force navigators Skywalkers. The Last Jedi adopting the name of the most famous Jedi seems perfectly natural. TROS didn't do a good job of conveying the point, but Luke's sacrifice on Crait was famous. Orphen Rey who becomes the student of both Luke/Leia is a natural fit for the Skywalker name.

I've seen that as well. I'm glad they didn't do that, especially the casting choice would have been terrible.

My post wasn't really about the bloodline, I was more refering to the "lie" Rey is living or better said what people think of it.

Did you read 'Bloodline'? Because that's exactly what you want. Going beyond blood. Leia gets outed as Vader's daughter, and people dislike her because of her heritage. But the message of the book or at least that part of the book is- blood doesn't defy you. That story would also work for Rey.

Certainly you can't be talking about the amazing Helen Mirren? I'm not sure about the overall idea, but she's great in everything.
I've read the book and it's fine, but again... I have zero interest in exploring bloodlines further. It's suffocating originality.

Yes, she is an amazing actress, but nothing about her screams Rey. Especially lookwise. Furthermore it would have been pretty unfair toward the ST actors to recast.

Me too. I'm only sharing possible ideas for conflicts.

I don't see it. She looks nothing like her. Daisy Ridley and Keira Knighley, yes but Helen Mirren looks more like an older Jennifer Lawrence.

I didn't say she had to look exactly like a young Daisy Ridley, but it's not that big of a stretch for such a fantastic actress.

I could care less about the sex of the heros just give me at the very least a good film. Are there people out here that shove gender down other people's throats? Of course there are. So what. That's the state of the world we live in and it's not going anywhere so why allow it so make you miserable?
Point blank. As a hard core fan, I'm looking fwd to this film even if the lead character was a meteorite or a porg, or Bett Midler. Care to share your thoughts on this vid?
Yes yes I know I know. It's Echo Base Network.

Don't even need to watch. I will not watch. Those two MFs are disgusting. I'm from Alabama, where they are, and I am embarrassed. Sadly, there are a lot of Bubbas like this around, and thanks to "He Who Shall Remain Nameless" they all done got out der on dem com puters and got 'er done up 'ere on the innerwebs. Lucky us.

Don't even give them the views, guys. Trust me this is probably some heinous, hateful and ignorant stuff.

Slightly off topic, but I'd very much enjoy if Daisy Ridley eventually takes up the Mark Hamill role of carrying the flag of this franchise. She's smart and strong, and has been through enough to not let some of the more ignorant parts of the fanbase get to her.

I guess it's just my way of saying, I hope there are plans for her to stick around above and beyond this next new adventure. The same goes for Boyega, who yes may be a bit more unpolished but hey it takes all types. I like his fire, and neither of them are too eager to back down from what they believe in. True to the characters they portray. Having those two as tentpoles of the franchise seems like a no-brainer to me.

Nothing against Daisy Ridley but Mark Hamill is "carrying the flag of the franchise" because his character, Luke Skywalker, has been, and continues to be, the most popular figure in all of Star Wars. In various fan polls, the character of Rey is lucky is she breaks the Top Twenty.
I don't see it. If there is an actress destined to be a 'tentpole of the franchise.' it's most likely to be Rosario Dawson.

Kathleen Kennedy terminated Damian Lindelof, who was going to introduce a POC in a lead role in a Star Wars film for the first time ever. ( Kennedy doesn't need another bad film besides Solo in terms of box office returns, with a fanbase like Star Wars' she anticipated the risk, many within the fanbase would boycott the film, and nowadays, word of mouth is how films make money, people don't listen to critics anymore, if someone you know says the film is good you'll take a chance, its too expensive to go to movies when films hit online within weeks of release) Kennedy eschewed Lindelof's script, to returned to her (SAFE) favorite heroine: Rey, so KKs agenda seems rather clear to me... I love Rey, but come on... DUDE... the writing is on the wall...

Lindelof's script also featured Rey, so I don't know what your point is. Furthermore I guarantee you this movie will also have a black or an asian lead nonetheless.

Darth Vader and Han Solo are actually much more popular than Luke. I would even argue Darth Vader is the face of Star Wars.

I'm not sold on Dawson's acting as Ahsoka. Yes, she was okay in Mando, but that's it. Just okay. In the Ahsoka series she defintely needs to do more than having one facial impression and crossing her arms.

I think Rey should be the Ben Kenobi for the next movies. In the "New Jedi Order" movie she should introduce the next set of heroes, who will get movies and a TV series. But Rey still has a role going forward.
