    I am hoping it's more than a staff, and the only reason is because that one end that is so reminiscent of Darth Maul's saber.

    But I've come to terms with the likelihood it's just a staff.

    That's cool. It's been bugging me so I thought I'd single it out and sort of get it off my shoulders so to speak. I would be ok at the notion that it could be just that, a staff. Then that's when it starts bugging me like a splinter in my minds eye. I'm excited at both angles but honestly, deep down, I wan't the saber staff. But that's just me. (dual)

    This thread needs a poll. I think it is just a staff. Now in VIII I think it would be cool if she fought with a new type of staff-like Jedi weapon

    Yea I was thinking that could be JJ's props to the prequels in his own way, he's gotta tribute the prequels in SOME form or fashion. That would be a cool way to do it with his own twist just like you said, this time the protagonist. I saw a pic of her with the staff with a yellow blade somewhere but I can't remember.

    I agree that it's most likely just a staff, but I also agree that it might/should be foreshadowing for her getting a saberstaff of her own.

    I think its just a staff for Episode VII, maybe a electrostaff and in Episode VIII she will build a double bladed lightsaber to use similar to how she uses the staff.

    I'm convinced it's an electrostaff similar to the ones the Magnaguards and Sarco Plank wielded. It's resistant to lightsabers so it would allow her to participate in some duels.

    Other than just a staff? Ok, let me use my imagination:

    A telescope to watch the stars.
    A musical instrument (maybe a maracas or didgeridoo).
    A flashlight.
    A fishing rod.
    A container of some sort.

    But I would bet it's a staff.

    While it isn't an official description (I believe someone from Lucasfilm said these people made up a lot of the descriptions), there is this line from a costume version of the staff: "Similar to the staff that was used to deflect lightsaber blades during The Clone Wars..."

    It feels cheap to me that they would use a clearly Maul inspired design and not make it a saber. If it is a saber, I doubt Rey knows that it is and it is probably broken or missing a crystal. But the chances that it is one have been decreasing over time for me.

    I doubt it is "just a staff" as it has clear mechanical parts to it. So I would guess it is some kind of electrostaff or at least a cattle-prod type device.

    Cool. As long as it can deflect lightsabers and increases her options in combat then I can live with that. I'll meet the saber staff approach half way. That should be quite exciting as I'm sitting here rewinding that scenario in my mind. In fact. I don't think I've ever seen one of those in an action sequence YET. Are there any?

    I think "just a staff" is the "retro" approach that JJ and Kasdan is going for. Not every weapon in a galaxy far far away has to be glamorous. Just my 2 cents.

    This is a yari used in sojutsu, japanese spear fighting. Rey's staff fits the description of a yari really well and it would completely different than anything we have seen before

    That would be fine by me, except they used design elements straight off of Maul's saber and the staff has parts that are clearly meant to do something more than just be blunt objects. It is a bad design choice to use elements of Maul's saber if it isn't meant to be a saber, or at the very least an electrostaff made to fight sabers.
