Nars, you beat me to the punch. While Angelman makes a really good point re: 'incomplete' toys, I think we will find her staff being used only as a blunt force weapon in 7. So, it is 'complete' for an ep7 toy.

Someone could then fix/ignite/say 'you better hang on to that'/or obtain said staff (it has been postulated Snoke gets it back via Kylo).

Fast forward to ep8 and beyond when the staff is utilized as more than just a stick either by Rey or another character.

    Ep8 toys then show the electro/saberstaff aspect(s).

    /maybe just wishful thinking

I'm leaning toward electrostaff as well. In the season two trailer for Rebels, Ezra and Kanan wield electrostaffs that are very similar in look to what Rey is carrying.

That's pretty telling wording, or at least to hint at strongly, for an officially marketed piece.

Sure, no problem, I posted some in this thread here https://thecantina.starwars7news.co...-possible-location-for-new-jedi-academy.5214/, but I'll also put it here:

Sarco Plank is basically a nasty treasure hunter, definitely of the scum and villainy persuasion. In Weapon of a Jedi, Sarco is nicknamed "The Scavenger", and Luke hires him as a guide while on Devaron (this is right after Episode IV), but Sarco eventually betrays Luke after they work together to take down and Imperial squad and they have a duel. Sarco weilds an electrostaff much like the Magnaguards from the Clone Wars and its resistant to lightsabers. At the end of Weapon of a Jedi, Sarco ends up falling in a pit, but Luke senses he's still alive, and we know that he's on Jakku in The Force Awakens from some of the pictures released.

That's a nice little easter egg to flesh out a side character in TFA :)

Thanks for the info and link to your other thread.

If it is Plank's electrostaff maybe its broken or out of power? Maybe once she gets off-world she gets a few power converters or something to power it back up? xD

It may be so old it just doesn't work anymore, but would be handy to keep around, especially since Rey finds herself up against a lightsaber-wielding psychopath.
Maybe we're going to get a fun action scene like they recently had in Game of Thrones where both Rey and Kylo are equally surprised that her staff blocks his saber? It could even be the scene from the teaser where we see Kylo violently swinging overhead as all the villagers are standing there rounded up.

There have been tweets displayed around here that demonstrate that the descriptions on those costumes were not Lucasfilm/Disney approved. We can't put much stock in the descriptions.

Yea it turned out well! Aaannd here I stand at the fork with a slight lean towards the non-saber staff side.

here is a side view of the ratty gun then since no one can take my word for it. Lord Phanatic the image on the back of the book is from right after Star Wars. The action figure is from 34 years later on Jakku. i didn't say he never owned an electrostaff. i said his figure doesn't come with one. if rey did get part of her staff from Plank, its quite a bit larger then his. maybe its just handy to have a shaft that cant be sliced in half by a lightsaber. if it can repel a lightsaber maybe she can also use it to block blaster bolts too with abnormally fast reflexes. it would be neat to see a character that is force sensitive but has no interest in being a jedi.

Also electrostuff would be a perfect training weapon for a future Jedi.

I could buy Rey's staff being a defunct electrostaff/lightspear; I've got no problem with that. But if it is an actual funcioning wonder-weapon, then why isn't it shown as such in the toys, posters, trailers, etc.? There must either be a VERY good reason to hide the weapon's tech effects from us (and for the record I can only think of stupid resons myself), OR there are not tech effects to Rey's staff.

Quarterstaff still tells us nothing due to sheer quantity of variation of this type of weapon. Quarterstaff is very broad term. There were simple wooden staffs, and variants with metal tips, spikes, short blades, metal reinforcements, etc.

Quarterstaff is maybe just a canon name for electrostaff ( electrostaff is not canon but fandom name of that weapon ).

I have a strong feeling that it is a sabrestaff of some kind because I feel that Rey will be a Jedi, or some type of force user, at the beginning of TFA. After looking at all the pictures I am really convinced that the bulkier end is used for something. That something being a tiny lightsaber.
