You know, that she might be offspring of Leia/Luke, right? Constructing her own variant of lightsaber would be logical.

I don't think Rey is just a scavenger. But at the same time I'm ready for anything. I have no preconceived notions of any cast members in this movie.

Question to those who believe Rey's staff to be a llightsaber-staff/electrostaff etc. in TFA:
How do you reconcile such an idea with the fact that we haven't seen any such features displayed in the vids, pictures, posters, toys, covers, etc. thus far? How do you explain that 'they' are apparently keeping the high-tech feature a secret from us? Why would they?

Just to be clear, I'm not trying to be a smartass or firebrand; I'm genuinly interested in hearing arguments for this view, for although I'm firmly in the "only a staff"-camp, I think it is an interesting theory that Rey's weapon hides a laserblade function or similar. I don't believe it, but it is an interesting thought nonetheless, and I would like to hear how supporters of the theory explain the fact that there is no evidence for the argument so far?

IMO Rey's staff is an electrostaff. I assumed it to be the first time I seen it. It just looks too mechanical to be just a simple staff. The "Sarco Plank Electrostaff Theory" is interesting.

I don't understand why JJ would keep such a simple detail a secret, but I guess we will find out Dec 18. (r2-d2)

Yea somethings not adding up. Plain staff yet no Rey footage of her using the staff and if we do see her use it, we may not see her use it's primary function if in fact it has one.

Yes, @Nars, I saw your theory, which is a convenient explanation. This would however agree with the argument that Rey's staff is just a staff in TFA, and my question was an attempt to gauge a rationalization from people who hold the other view on the matter. I'll go back and edit the question post to underline that I'm talking about TFA, however.

I think they would keep it secret because everything about Rey is secret. There are only maybe 10 pictures of Rey out there, they keep using the some ones over and over again and there is maybe 5 seconds of video of her combined. We honestly haven't much of any of the characters. If they can sell toys without her last name I'm sure they have no problem leaving out that her staff is more than just a staff. Especially if giving out that info would spoiler a plot surprise.

How could she survive so long in the SW universe without some kind of 'tech' weapon? Every other Hero/Villain has some kind of 'tech' weapon.
Almost every picture I see of Rey she has it with her, it is important to her.

Who brings a staff to a blaster fight? Jakku doesn't look like the kind of place you go to with just a stick

Exactly my point. It just doesn't make sense to have a primitive staff in such a dangerous place.

My counter argument would be that Rey thrives on her wits and brawn and skill, rather than a tech gadget. That, and her blaster pistol of course.
The staff is definitelly important to Rey, no doubt about that, but it doesn't have to be dripping with AWESOMENESS-OF-TECHNOLOGICAL-DOOMNESS to be important.

There is no Blaster in the Rey Black Series 6" figure. Only the staff.

There is a blaster in at least one of the toys, which (together with concept art) means there is much more "evidence" for a blaster than for any tech-feature in Rey's staff ;)

The Rey elite figure comes with the staff and a blaster on Rey.

She has a blaster in the Japanese coloring book cover.

And the concept art displayed at Celebration 2015 of Rey and a DL-44 style blaster.

I wasn't aware of that. Thanks for the info. Now I must rethink my opinion of the staff. :(

Is it electrostaff, lightsaber pike, hidden lightsaber, soon to be lightsaber pike/staff etc., doesn't really matter. I refuse to think that Disney marketing is showing up this piece of weapon on almost every picture, poster, toy, video etc. just to reveal that this is metal rod.

You might still be correct in the staf being a tech-thing, but the evidence points away from that, IMHO, even if said "evidence" is far from conclusive.

Actually, I would argue that this could be a very strong statement on the central theme in much of Star Wars, that technologically inferior characters/groups can successfully fight off enemies vastly more soffisticated, through wits, moral superiority, and goodly justice. I would argue that Rey kicks arse in TFA because SHE is awesome, not because she possess some sophisticated piece of wonder-tech, and that her awesomeness is only increased by her usophisticated weaponry.

Still, I might very well be wrong.

Well ok Star Wars is full of anachronisms. A rotten ship is the fastest in the galaxy, Knights fighting with mellee weapons against blasters? Somebody starts a David Goliath fight with his Xwing against a battlestation. Pigs with battle axes. And the guys that constructed the Death Star guard a jedi with their sticks.

All great SW characters kick ass, because they are awesome. Having cool weapon does not undermine anyone as character. It would be the case if said weapon was some kind of uber, magic insta kill device. Fighting with lightsaber or staff (whatever version it might be) still required skill to operate and do not take awesomeness from anyone. :D
