    Well i find it very interesting that the Visual Dictionary refers to it as a "Quarterstaff" which is more of a late medieval thing and fits nicely with the overall theme. We have the poor hero armed with a staff almost like Robin Hood or something in contrast to the wealthy evil Knight and his broadsword. Most of us have been calling it a Boo staff and thinking in eastern terms of martial arts.

    EDIT: And since the Quarterstaff seems to be big in the 15th century it blends very well with other 15th century TFA ideas and themes that has been touched upon earlier by others.

    Actually, it is called a Bo-staff because it was explicitly mentioned... somewhere that Daisy was taking bojutsu lessons. In all likelyhood however, her fighting style will be a unique blend of bojutsu, medieval quarterstaff fighting, stage fighting, and fight choreographer's specially invented techniques.

    @Lord Phanatic started a wager over in the casino that Rey's staff is more than just a staff. Right now he is the only one who has bet that way. The poll above shows that the more than just a staff crowd is larger than the just a staff crowd. I encourage all of you who think her staff may be some sort of saber or electro staff to head over to the Casino and drop some credits on it.

    It is already. it tells us something about the character and the enviroment, great storytelling just aby a staff without telling us in a dialogue.

    I don't buy it. All that military stuff littering the sands and not one working weapon? I think it more likely a tool, like some sort of metal detector, that doubles up as a weapon in an emergency.

    Maybe Imperial energy packs don't hold a charge so well after 30 years and sitting in that heat?

    i wager a thousand credits that rey's staff is a part of/used to be a part of machinery used in the engine of the destroyyed at-at that she lives in. speculation: she probably discovered she could use the force and then started using machinery parts as a weapon.

    I suppose it's possible that solar panels and wind turbines don't exist in a GFFA. Just seems a bit unlikely.

    Solar panel tech does exist in the universe. thats what the wings of a Tie Fighter are made of
    there are also Power Couplings
    Power/energy packs
    Gronk Droids (which are walking batteries)

    that would be kind of funny to see poe and finn crash the advanced tie and some scavengers show up- they limp over thinking the scavangers are coming to help and just get knocked over as they rush to get the solar panels ;)
