SPECULATION Rey's staff. Just a staff? More than just a staff?

Most likely it's just a staff. But it's not as important as her skill to kick some ass with it, which will make it easier for her to adapt to a new melee device later in the movie and the sequels.

 

considering it seems to disappear after Jakku, I kind of hope it gets comically destroyed. Like the "livestock" on the freighter snap it in half or something like that.

I'd pay good money to see Kristian Harloff's face if it was to be destroyed. Just to show how insignificant it is

 

Han giving Rey the blaster must be because she lost her staff in a fight and Han warned her she's gonna need more than a stick to fight these pirates.

 

I just think its a part from the downed STAR DESTROYER and that's it.... nothing more, nothing less

 

She has a staff now because it foreshadows her sabrestaff duel vs Plagueis at the end of episode 9

 

and Finn!

Rey's staff is just a staff.
It is there to show the audience she is really adept at hand-to-hand combat with a melee weapon - that is why she gets into a scuffle with the junkyard thugs early on, and then later displays her prowess again onboard the freighter against the gang members... the upshot of which is that we will find it easier to accept when she finally picks up that lightsaber and takes over from the injured Finn in the final duel against Kylo Ren.

 

Yes it is just animation. It does not light up it does not shock the animation adds motion trails. You have seen this before in just about every comic book ever and half of all cartoons.

Daisy said it was a staff. Is she part of the giant mystery box conspiracy?

 

But by the time she arrives at Takodana, she is given a blaster and she is no longer wearing her staff.


Later she is abducted by Kylo Ren in the forest. She is still not carrying her staff, and she defends herself with the blaster Solo gave her.



Then she is not reunited with the rest of the gang until she escapes from Starkiller. I seriously doubt Kylo Ren let her go back for her staff and take it with her, so I think the last we will see of her staff being used is onboard the pirate freighter.

Imagination suggests many things the staff could potentially be capable of or be used for.
But - just IMHO of course - we are not required to use our imaginations, we are putting together a jigsaw puzzle with some pieces missing; we simply need to study the pieces we already have in place to determine what should appear on the missing pieces.
That's just the way I tend to approach these things - and I'm not saying there is a right or wrong way - but, for me personally, I just don't see the scope or need for Rey's staff to do anything more than we already know it does in the first half of the movie, and it seems she won't be using it at all beyond that point...

 

So anything you don't like is misdirection and lies? The girl said its just a staff. She apparently had the clearance to confirm that. My point is that if there was a huge misdirection going on its the most ridiculous one in history. If mean if Rey's staff is a lightsabre are they going to mail a new staff the millions and millions of toys they already made. "Sorry little Timmy we couldn't have people know that THE WOMAN WE WERE MARKETTING AS THE NEW JEDI was really a jedi and had lightsabre so we made sure that in EVERY SINGLE marketing pic, video game, toy and product hid the fact that the Staff (which she abandons after getting a blaster) is really a super special lightsabre."
