A few days ago Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Lucasflim has mapped out the future of Star Wars for the next 10 years, but no one actually saw this one coming. The official Star Wars site has just announced that The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on a new trilogy from a yet unexplored part of the galaxy far, far away with new characters!

    From StarWars.com:

There are no details about the release date or the Star Wars era the new trilogy will explore. It's exciting that we will see unexplored parts of the galaxy with new and fresh characters and stories.

This is a huge vote of confidence in Rian Johnson by LFL, 35 days before The Last Jedi is even released. Exciting years await all Star Wars fans.

And it seems Rian is pretty happy and having fun too.

Also here's The Star Wars Show's breaking episode on the news:

    UPDATE!

Also Variety reports that Disney chairman-CEO Bob Iger revealed during the company’s quarterly earnings call that Disney is planning a live-action “Star Wars” TV series to air on its entertainment streaming service that is expected to launch by the end of 2019.

While this news is expected, it's great to hear a confirmation from Iger himself that a live-action TV show is indeed coming in the following years.

Now we wonder what will happen with the third Star Wars stand-alone movie. Will this new trilogy start after the rumored Kenobi movie is released? Or this idea was completely trashed?

Wow, exciting! And it isn't about the wretched skywalkers which probably means IX does end that saga for good. Another nail in the Rey Skywalker/Solo coffin?

The execs at Disney were really blown away by TLJ, huh? So much so they gave Rian not one, not two but a whole bloody trilogy.

    I'm so incredibly hyped rn

He clearly knows what he is doing. I hope it's not a prequel story of some kind and set after the Skywalker's are dead. Unless it's about Plagueis!

Holy sh*t, an unconnected anthology trilogy with a singular creative mind behind it. This is fantastic news, based on what they have said I feel like it sort of needs to take place during the Old Republic era. I'm hoping for the Jedi/Sith wars maybe even set up Darth Bane.

No it doesn't probably mean that. What it does mean is they started another trilogy.

It could be part of the "Star Wars Story" series and run concurrent with Episodes X-XI-XII. The Skywalker Saga could simply take 6 years off while this one plays out then return.

If anything the release and the language they used ".... which is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, Johnson will introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored." - would hint at Rey Skywalker since that is the easiest, simplest, most direct way to lead into Episode X+ whether they do it right away or a few years down the road. There is simply no reason for them to give the Skywalker Saga a definitive ending, its the defining story of Star Wars and the biggest earner/cash cow they have.

Also - is Kennedy able to work any director who isn't Johnson or Abrams?

They won't run two trilogies parallel. Not only would that be expensive and confusing but they would compete too much with one another. As I have thought for a long time, this trilogy will see the end of the Skywalker saga so they can make brand new trilogies. They can't be explicit about that because it would spoil this trilogy.

Star Wars is about more than the Skywalker's and if RJ can introduce a new group to us that we love then the Skywalker's will be one piece of a much bigger picture. Their story has been told. You can't just keep on repeating it. New exciting times ahead!

They also cannot plan for future films with Daisy as they'd have no idea, nor would she, of what she wants to do in what may be up to 15yrs time (once this new trilogy is done).

I believe that is the point of this trilogy(7-9) to pass the torch and move on from the Skywalkers.

She has worked a few times with Spielberg ...

But in all seriousness, I think that this fabulous news. Disney must really like TLJ.

I'm confident we'll eventually see Episodes X-XII, but this news confirms it won't be for quite a while.

I'm ecstatic though, when I first read the headline I almost did a backflip... almost.

The possibilities really are endless with something like this.

This is exciting news. One thing I noticed is they say it will explore a corner of the Star Wars galaxy not previously explored. Do they mean a physical corner, or temporal?

If it's physical my bet is something involving the Chiss or/and Rakata. Hope it's Old Republic though.

Why not? They are playing 2 series of movies parallel - its not too expensive, confusing and they come out every other year so....no competition. They certainly could if they wanted too.

The Skywalkers are the center/heart of Star Wars. To think they'll end that part of it when there is no reason for them too is silly.

How many movies is Daisy signed for? 3 or 6 or 9 or 12? Disney has learned the value of signing actors to long term contracts with their Marvel universe, why wouldn't they apply what they have learned to Star Wars? And if they are dumb and didn't, it becomes how much money does Daisy need to return - Robert Downey Jr is getting something like 75 million for each Avenger movie at this point - think she'd turn that down? And if there is absolutely no way to get her back - simply age up the character and re-cast or jump a generation.

ANd how do you figure a new trilogy will be done in 15 years? 3 movies, every other year, AT MOST 2 years in pre-production. That doesn't = 15 years.

So interesting news but seriously this is something else. Its separate different future trilogy that probably has no connection to either VIII & IX? I mean yeah I get its exciting for some but I am just focusing on the here and now. Shrugs and moves on.

Again why? There is no reason to "move on". They can do other things while producing Skywalker Saga films at the same time (As they are doing now) OR just let the SKywalkers rest for a while and bring them back to great fan-fair and excitement......what is the benefit in ending it definitively?

RJ has such an imagination I doubt he would want to be constrained by the nature of a prequel. Essentially you always know what will happen and the stakes are never high. I think this will be beyond the Skywalker story, where he can take it wherever he wants. This Disney deal is starting to get better all the time!
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 9, 2017, Original Post Date: Nov 9, 2017 ---
We've debated this before. I think the Skywalker story will get boring, fast.

A saga and standalones at the same time is fine but two sagas? I know people who mixed up rey and jyn. Two trilogies is too much.

And it'll take longer than 6 years. Planning will start now but pre production won't go into full swing for another year at least. Then production of each film will take 2 and so if the first is released in 2022 at the earliest, then this will take us up to 2026/27. That's the fastest estimate. I think it likely to take us up to the end of that decade.

And Daisy may or may not come back, but they won't bank on that now. We've seen the pitfalls with Carrie Fisher of planning trilogies into the future. Best end the Skywalker story while it is at its height.
