Is Ep. 9 the end of the Skywalker saga? Hmm...

This makes me even more excited for TLJ.
Haha. I was wondering that about the Kenobi movie too.

Depends if this new trilogy is replacing the Skywalker Saga movies for a while OR if they'll be the next 3 Star Wars Story films.

No - there is no benefit in ending it.

But it might be the last entry for a while.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 9, 2017 ---
lol - based on what? How many conversatinos have you had with her about it?

Robert Downy Jr was done and moving on until he saw it. Jennifer Lawrence was a indy actress who was all about the craft of acting until she started to get paid.....you can't blame some for not taking multi. generational wealth when its offered and people don't turn that stuff down.

ALso, going back and doing more Star Wars movies doesn't hurt her professionally. If anything its another block buster to her credit.

And of course it doesn't matter if she signed a contract for 6 or 9 or 12 movies - I have yet to see a good argument for why Disney would only sign her for 3.

Well let's see who Rey is first. And if this new trilogy is set after the Skywalker saga, would that not suggest it is over?

No - as you keep pointing out, the Star Wars universe is big, you tell stories that involve this family.

A new Skywalker trilogy could be set concurrently or be set further down the timeline or between Episodes IX and this trilogy.

If Rey survives the sequels I wouldn't bet against seeing her again but she would not be the central character. Perhaps a mentorship role, maybe as a mother. But I doubt another three films. Mainly because I do think Daisy is attached to Rey and she has even said that Star Wars sets feel like 'home'. However another three? I highly doubt it unless its cameo's. The rumors anyway before TFA was that Daisy was signed up for three films anyway as a 'right to come back' clause.

My thoughts exactly. TPTB were always going to do what they thought was best but it's a confident move indeed to announce before gauging the general audience response to TLJ.
And you called it a long time ago. My first response to the news was to give Master Shaitan a begrudging "you told us so"! ;)

It could go either way. If they bring Daisy back it probably won't be a mentor type - she's too young.

I looked a while ago and couldn't find any of hte main characters contracts. I just find it hard to believe that Disney learned its lesson with the Marvel movies and signs those actors to many movies up front - 5, 6 or 7 seems like the norm - and they wouldn't do that here. There is down side to the studio, its not like they HAVE to make the movies just because the actors are signed.

to early for "told you so" - we have zero confirmation that the Skywalker Saga is ending.

Brilliant news. A new and original cast and story with a reputable director backed by Disneys finances. What is there not to like? And I'm a cynic lol.

Here's to hoping they go with Revan's story, I'd love to see that play out on the big screen but if they go for something completely new I'd be on board with that.

I also think it would finally give a star wars film the opportunity to evolve without the tyrannical peer pressure from its fans, let's face it there's nothing so terrible like a star wars fan spurned lol. Jar jar flashbacks (emperor)

I doubt we'll be hearing from the Skywalkers anytime soon, in cinematic form, after 2019- if at all. I figure Rian's trilogy will be set for the next decade, with any spinoffs filling in the gaps. Any further episodes pertaining to the Skywalkers probably could wait, at least any with Rey/Finn/Poe since the actors are fairly young. If Luke survives Ep. 9, would Hamill agree to another trilogy since he would be well into his 70s by then??

Depending how Ep. 9 turns out, I wouldn't mind if it were to be the end of the Skywalker saga. I'm ready for some closure and would like it end on a high note. Or satifying conclusion. All good things must come to an end. Although Disney's shareholders probably don't think so..

If I understood this correctly, the new cast - Ridley, Boyega, Isaac, Driver - won't appear in any Star Wars films after Episode IX, for the foreseeable future? I didn't really, truly dawn on me prior to this announcement. 2027 would be the perfect time for Episode X then, fifty years after Episode IV. Time will tell. Anyway, it's wonderful to hear about the mystery trilogy.

We won't know for certain for at least a couple years about the fate of Rey, etc. and another sequel trilogy.

Hopefully the new films to come will take place in a new era that hasnt been explored except in the games.

Good they are branching out from the Skywalker saga. The galaxy is a vast vast universe. Theres so much potential for more/new characters and storyline ideas to explore.

Awesome if it takes place in the old Republic era. I and like so many others have been waiting a long time for something like this to be announced one day. With little details at this point, i will keep my excitement down a few notches until we get more concrete info of what is to come. :D

It's interesting to see how KK is decisive both to fire directors when she loses confidence as well as to invest heavily when she has trust.

As for the "Skywalker saga", I strongly doubt that Ep.IX will be the last we'll see of the Skywalker family. What I believe will happen is that there will be a somewhat long hiatus on Skywalker films after IX, and that's exactly why they are announcing a new, separate trilogy.

Disney/LFL understands that one of the most powerful things about Star Wars is the wait and anticipation generated by the decades that passed between each trilogy. The releases of TPM and TFA were probably the most anticipated releases in movie history. An eventual Ep.X - which, again, I strongly believe will happen - will need to repeat that formula so that Star Wars doesn't lose this aspect and becomes "common place".
