We also have to remember that the production is supposedly very compartmentalized; the people working on the movie who are pessimistic about it might have only seen a few things out of context. Maybe certain things taken by themselves appear very similar to the older movies, but when you see them in relation to everything else, they take on new meanings.

At any rate, I sincerely hope they don't pull a Superman Returns with this movie.

If the imagery on the viewscreen art is relevant to the film, then possibly the 'Catapult' superweapon is a device that detaches moons from orbit and redirects them as projectiles? It's a gigantic gravity sling.

    good point.

With the "Death Star" rumour. I seriously doubt its just a carbon copy of the imperial one, I just think its a code name (if true at all). The OT, Tarkin Novel and New Dawn novel, all paint a picture that the empire was struggling to get enough production for materials from its mines and resource hubs to even get the imperial death star completed. The new republic would hardly have any access to materials, especially when it looks like the galaxy shifts betweens bouts of Hot and Cold War.

    Ryoome interests me.

A quick Google search constantly come up Rome. Given the Kylo Ren/Nero Lyk theory and JJ's use of the Roman Emperor for a villain before, then it could be linked.

The closest thing to Ryoome I can find on Wookipedia is Riome which is very interesting indeed.

Just a thought running through my head, complete speculation,

If true, I wonder if it's a merger between a tractor beam and the death star laser array?

Kind of like how all the death star lasers focus from multiple origin sources into one point, but it is a tractor beam to capture a celestial body from its regular orbit and send it on a collision course?

For Leia, it could be a moral quandary if her daughter or child is a Jedi and is one of the hunted. If the detector isn't destroyed, her daughter would be on the run for the rest of her life or killed.

To be honest if the rumor is true about Leia using DIII to destroy the super weapon;then it kinda redeems her from not being able save Vader from destroying Alderaan.

As for all of it it's still just rumors. And at least 90% of all the rumors I don't believe.

Also they are still doing reshoots. I doubt many peopke have seen any film at all. I doubt it is like ANH except that there is a new three.

To me, this is the problem with the mystery box. Too many rumors and speculation. Misdirection is also annoying as hell.

The Death star 3... or a super weapon first movie?

So, we need villains, places to assault or defend, and people to care about. I really hope they aren't recycling old plots so quickly.

The idea of the Imperials using a 'device' to hunt force-sensitives is interesting because it gives the Jedi and Sith a common enemy -- and the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I have long suspected the Saga will end with some sort of reconciliation between the Jedi and Sith, and this threat could be a step in that direction.

The Republic having a DS is also interesting: it introduces an element of 'Animal Farm' to proceedings I hadn't considered. If the Republic is prepared to fight fire with fire, who is the bad guy?

Quite why the 'weapon' needs to be a planet is beyond me, although it will probably have something to do with the planet core having 'an unusually dense seam of Kyber Crystal', or some such non-sense. Maybe the Crystal 'calls out to force-sensitives' and this tendency is being exploited to execute a 'massacre of the innocents.' (We've had immaculate conception, why not throw in Herod-style infanticide too?)

Maybe the Imperials toying with the Kyber Crystal(s) is what triggers the 'awakening' of the Force? Maybe the Force don't like it's rocks toyed with?....

A death star being in the possession of the rebels makes sense to me, it simplifies the politics and makes it more relatable while presenting a strong moral choice for Leia. I expected this to be a rehash of A New Hope with J.J. being on board anyway..

A weapon which seeks out force sensitives? That's just bad. Midi-chlorians bad. If that's what they're doing then we're going to get some really ridiculous things happen when they try to top it in the fourth trilogy.

I keep coming back to Prometheus, but that movie tried to re-hash Alien and failed to do so due to a filming style which was too Hollywood, a lack of cast chemistry and a lack of new elements added to the universe..
Hopefully the crew complaints are just another case of Aliens, James Cameron was hated by his entire crew on that film, but he ended up making one of the best films of all time.

I'm concerned about Anthony Daniels backpedaling on his praises for The Force Awakens though, he DID strongly hint that it would be the better/on par with Empire with that tweet.

I'm gonna put this out there: make of it what you will.

I've been off-line for a few days, visiting my folks, and I've come back to some seriously downbeat and pessimistic opinions. It's very sad. But as someone who hasn't experienced the slow decline some of you must have, let me tell you that these rumours appear very suspect in light of the news that LF/Disney are cracking down on leaks. The mystery box just got a new padlock; so if there is a campaign being waged by TPTB to throw us off the scent, now would be the ideal time for it to go into overdrive. Personally, I don't buy any of it: not the Force-sensitive detector, not the planet that needs destroying, not the DS3. The only info new to me as I return that I would even consider a possibility is the meeting between Leia and the Hutts. Maybe I'm being over optimistic, I don't know.

But if these rumours are true, TFA could well be rubbish....

The one guy I secretly recorded for months had this to say in response to the notion about Episode VII being a rehash of Episode IV:

Very Yuuzhan Vong-esque! I like the idea! Hopefully Chewbacca won't be there to witness it himself this time round.

Hmmmm...I wonder if Lucas caught wind of the pessimism and started to publicly distance himself more from the films.
