The best thing is that he did that after I tried to make piece with him in a PM message on Twitter. Even told him that he can post links here and they won't be removed. Oh well.

This clumsy gungan making a comeback in the new trilogy last I heard he lived out most of the wars on Coruscant, was replaced a senator of Naboo so he does not have any further role to play.

My thoughts on the treatment-screenplay evolution ... Disney might want TFA to be a reboot, taking tropes successful in earlier SW films and polishing to attract a modern audience, then adding new plotlines to enable further films to be made. It's very much standing on the shoulders of giants which in this case Disney's purchased lock, stock and barrel. They're playing very safe with TFA and there'll be nothing to surprise or shock fans beyond the likelihood of killing classic characters if their actors only wanted to sign up to one episode. It actually works in Disney's strategic favour if OT actors bow out in TFA ... they want this film to be heavily nostalgic and worth repeat viewings on multimedia, fun and comfortable - then make their own mark in the sequels with new ideas funded by TFA profits.

Question is whether the nostalgia impetus will nicely cushion box office takings or render TFA a cult status instead of mainstream appeal. It's got to be a safe screenplay but not sanitized and I think that's why Lucas' treatments were rejected ... he wanted to push the saga into new territory and relegate the OT to its middle-act place in the 9 film saga, but Disney lack the confidence to go that far and they need a product that is virtually already a known, loved and stable merchandising entity before it's even through the start gate by strength of association with a proven brand. TFA needs to instill confidence in shareholders who will have sat down to watch the OT (educated how SW is different from Star Trek) and expect the same characters and tropes in their investment because they lack the imagination to envisage anything more and they won't invest in the unknown... desert planet, C3PO and R2D2, stormtroopers, villain just like Darth Vader, X-wings, TIE Fighters, star destroyers, Millennium Falcon, Chewbacca, space battle station, cantina sequence, big star-fight, Han, Luke and Leia - and toss some elements of ESB into the mix because polls show it's a very popular commodity in the SW catalog. So, we might be getting Episode 4.5 instead of a true Episode 7.

It makes me wonder if the reason why the EU was sidelined was because the men and women with the money are never going to read comics or novels or play computer games, but they can spare a few hours in a comfy theatre watching live-action, and since live-action is what they're investing in, peripheral SW lore becomes immaterial until re-purposed as live-action or cartoons where it becomes an easily-accessible medium they can understand and manipulate, and of course a big money-spinner.

I understand that no one wants to hear negative buzz on the film and that it is the nature of this site to discuss every morsel of news to death. But just remember, complaints from the rank and file aren't always indicative of quality. In fact, they can be just the opposite.

This quote from the piece sounds to me like complaints from the CG/effects designers. "Going over new ground with what they are asked to work on" and "not enough new ideas" sounds to me like creatives who are being asked to work on individual creations for the new film. Now imagine you are one of those artists and you come up with a "sweet" new idea for some alien of vehicle. You think its groundbreaking, but you take it to JJ and he turns it down because it isn't "Star Wars" enough. Having lost your idea baby, you might criticize the production for lack of creativity without appreciation for the greater whole and the reason for the rejection. Its common for front line employees to lack understanding of the greater picture and complain based on their own individual interests and ideas. They think they could do it better and then complain to anyone who will listen about JJ and his high horse not appreciating your artistic genius.

I don't know this is what happened, but it seems equally plausible to me as the movie being a complete rehash. But even if it does end up being a rehash, I don't think that is a worst case scenario. JJ was brought in to reset SW. Maybe he is taking that mission too literally. But even if we get a fun rehashed SW clone in TFA, it sets up the new trilogy in a way the prepares for VIII and IX to break new ground. I've been saying since the beginning (and pardon the baseball analogy)...All I want from JJ in TFA is a solid single or double. Just don't screw up and then let Johnson come in an drive you home. Rian Johnson is my hope to make the first truly great SW movie sine ESB. JJ is just here to reestablish the universe so that others can come in and do great things with it.

I don't think there's any reason to freak out over something someone's source said at this point. As far as I'm concerned we still haven't seen anything substantial enough to say the Death III will be something that actually appears in the movie. The Death Star looking object in that art could have easily been swapped out for a new ship or a satellite-like weapon or something. I think people are over reacting and need to put faith in the people who are behind TFA. It isn't going to be a rehash of the OT. Just from a money stand point if you are Disney you want to make it as fresh and exciting (while including nostalgia obviously) as you can so people want to see it more than once AND to get everyone excited for the rest of the ST. If someone's source is saying there's all kinds of rehashed stuff I would have to at least consider this person has been misinformed in some way.

SW didn't need to be reset. If that was the intention then they shouldn't have titled it episode 7. Create a new storyline with new characters and just have it be a spin-off. But not surprised to hear these doubts of the film. Been having those doubts from the get go since rumors of the plotline started coming out. And from everything I've read to me it points to a rehash of ANH. Always got the feeling that wanted to center this film to the OT fanatics and prequel haters.
This being episode 7 shouldn't be a rehash it should take the OT for what it is, the middle act, and advance the storyline forward towards it's conclusion. This new trilogy needs to be the final act as it was intended. Episode 9 should be the last film in this story. If Disney wants to continue making SW films after that perfect. But start a story with new characters in the same SW universe.

Whether you or I believe it needs to be reset is meaningless though. Disney and Lucasfilm thought it needed a reset to a more OT centric style and story. Whether they take that too far or not remains to be seen.

As for the snow planet I wonder is it a unknown planet the sith in this one is from, as for superweapons at this stage of the timeline i doubt we will see anymore plots to hold the galaxy in the fear of for example the death star we saw how that ended (twice off course) there shouldn't be anymore.

According to Mizzlewhump, TFA begins with Leia taking over as leader of the Republic after her predecessor dies. If that's the case, the predecessor could be the one who ordered the construction of the Death Star and Leia could just find out after she assumes power.

And that would "rhyme" well with Yoda's acceptance of a clone army that was built for him without his approval. A weapon of questionable moral standing that is used out of desperation by someone corrupted by their circumstances.

    A few different thoughts....

I am not a PT hater as some are, as I feel like the movies were entertaining and it did tell the story of Anakin becoming Vader. The problem was the execution was poor and I think Lucas lost his way a little getting all geeked up about the technology he didn't have for the OT and overdid it in the PT. He also lost his way some with some of the story inconsistency between the PT and the OT I think because of some of the flaws of the PT there is going to be a natural move back towards the OT. If TFA is similar in theme to the OT or more specifically ANH it does not been it will be a bad movie. If the execution is good the movie will be good and Just because it is similar also does not mean it won't be new or different.

I'm sure there are some who might have concerns about the direction of TFA. Any movie being made is that way. Since TFA is highly anticipated and is the biggest movie of the year, any negatitive thought about it is going to be amplified.

Rumors are rumors so they need to be taken with a grain of salt. Even if the rumors MSW reported are correct and they may seem like bad ideas, it still comes down to execution. If executed in the right way things that seem bad at first thought can turn out ok.

Speaking of MSW, I have always respected Jason's opinion, and have found his information interesting and informative. It's easy on a forum like this to take something the wrong way and get offended as typed words can be left for interpretation. He got upset at Viral and co. and said his peace in the Cantina which I believe was totally appropriate. However, continuing to hold a grudge and then retaliating on his own sight is very childish. In the future I think he will still provide some good info but my level of respect for him has diminished.

It's strange that some pessimistic people who are working on the movie consider that VII is to similar to the original trilogy?
Why they think this is a bad sign? mind boggling.
For me it sounds great like they are heading in the right direction, sure I don't want a copy and paste job of the OT, but if it's feels fresh and somehow similar to the OT, I have no problem with it.
This is only way to go in my opinion, to stay far away from the PT and try to reproduce OT standards in a modified style.
It won't be easy the bar is rised high.

I don't buy the Death Star plot at all. I think this idea of planet based superweapon has been through the mythology filter and popped out the other side as Death Star III.

I simply don't buy that the woman leading the alliance, whose home planet and entire surrogate family was killed by the original DS, would allow a new one to ever be constructed. It's counter to everything she and the former rebels stand for.

This is Star Wars, not Battlestar Galactica.

I will say that if it is true, I fear it's an irrevocable misstep without some MAJOR character work. Maybe Kasdan is capable of that level of storytelling, but I don't think it's possible in a 2-hour film.

I don't know. I'm not a fan of a death star retread, but I think the idea of a moral debate between Leia and Luke over how far to go to preserve the peace/stomp out the empire is a great direction to take the ST in. How better to further explore seemingly closed arcs of our OT characters than to put them in a position where both have valid arguments for taking a different course of action and threatening the stability of their alliance and personal relationships. And Leia, ever the pragmatist (with Luke being the idealist) is the perfect dynamic in which to explore the lengths to which you will go to achieve your desired ends.

This may well be a good time to think of an alternate title for the film in case it sucks..

    The Force Awakens (and yawns)
    The Force Is Mistaken
    The Farce Awakens
    The Childhood Arapened
    The Bowel Awakens
