Because this fake Palpatine is a very good fake and looks like the real thing? A little bit like in the Mission Impossible films: you have an actor that takes his mask off and then it's another actor who was all the time pretending he was someone else... I may be wrong, but a part of me really likes this Wizard of Oz option and having a leader putting up a show, a bit like North Korea.

And all that "your journey nears its end" is just words. Rey can be seduced equally by a real than by a fake Palpatine.

But what's the use of that? First they kill off Snoke, only to replace him with Palpatine, who isn't really Palpatine after all. Now that's what I call waste of time.

You see it as a waste of time because you're thinking of evil in terms of people, big personalities larger than life, which is ok because that's what we are used to in Star Wars. But what if the ultimate evil is not a person but the legacy of that person? And by that I mean what has been left behind, contingency plans perhaps, disciples, wannabes, copy-cats... Pretending Palpatine is alive could be the most effective intimidation. It's just a thought...

But why not use the character who literally stands for legacy then? Kylo Ren. If they really use a fake Palpatine, then they should have used that villain - they already have - for that.

Because Kylo Ren is a victim and we all know this. He's the legacy of our heroes. Kylo is the legacy of the Skywalkers, Vader, not Palpatine... Palpatine is a different kind of evil. A cartoon evil, hardly human.

Kylo Ren is the main villain of this trilogy. It doesn't matter whether he's a victim, gets redeemed or not. He's still the main villain. Snoke was his oppressor. The villain has to overcome the oppressor to become the oppressor himself. Kylo did. Storytelling 101. Now they introduce a new oppressor with Palpatine... Lazy.

I don't know about this storytelling 101 you're referring to... In the storytelling I'm familiar with villains and non villains kill their oppressors for a myriad of reasons and do not always become oppressors themselves. Sometimes they even become heroes, like Vader. It's not black and white and it should not be.

I suspect you consider the introduction of a new oppressor lazy because you would prefer Kylo Ren to be the new Palpatine like figure... I would find that yawn inducing. Give me a baddy who struggles with right and wrong any time of the day... Vader only became interesting in Empire, when his personal demons were brought to the fore.

Bringing in a fake Palpatine in the last saga film would be a new level of silly. If they're trying to tie all 9 films together him and Anakin are really the two big pieces that are the focus of the saga.

I actually like bringing him back as long as it ties into the chosen one prophecy. I can't imagine that JJ would ignore that if he's really trying to end this saga. I guess it turn out that Rey is the chosen one. Obi-Wan thought it was Luke for a time. Yoda warned that they could be wrong.

Maybe Palpatine had a decoy body double like Padme did in the PT. Vader killed the decoy in ROTJ while the real Palps was far away from there.

The way I see it the focus of the saga is the legacy, not these key figures. You can bring the actors back, as inspiration, as recreation of the past, but you don't really need the characters back. My opinion.

Daisy Ridley has already said on-camera that Palpatine is back, that his return is "instrumental" to the movie and that his return is explained as well.

Not a fan of fake Plapatine. You either go full Plapatine, or no Plapatine at all.

As for Rey Plapatine, I was calling for that way back in the post TFA days, hoping that TLJ would reveal some connection to Plapatine. Back then, especially on the Jedi Council forums, posters mostly hated the Rey Plapatine idea, for a number of reasons I didn't agree with.

Ultimately SW is about family, about real families but also as symbols of how society and governments work. So exploring Plapatine can deepen the world in a way more interesting than just "I like new ships!"

Funny you should say that as I remember theories regarding Rey Palpertine back as soon as TFA came out, with people comparing the similarities with her, at times, stabbing lightsaber technique which you see in her first fight with Kylo.

Then there's the similarities with her and the Emperors theme tune.

Will be interesting to find out at a later time if this idea was there from the start.

In a way it would be beautifully chiasmic if Rey, the light side user, was a descendant of palpatine when kylo, the dark one, is a descendant of Anakin, Luke, Han and Leia.

I hated the idea of Rey Palpatine around the TFA years. After TLJ am grasping this with both hands. TLJ was not fair to Rey she was just on the outskirts doing things and a family councillor, which is the complete opposite of character growth. Getting into the protagonist head is crucial, with a Palpatine reveal you will actually have some internal conflict. and anguish. It's a shot in the arm for the character which was needed. This energy however, should have been applied in the middle film but better late than never I suppose. I actually like part of the leaks, some parts are still on shaky ground, one or two things am not convinced about. But we shall see. I'd rather have had a different story in all honesty but at the end of the day, under JJ we are actually getting one. Am looking forward to more stuff coming out in the future. I actually missed D23, I was in hospital :( but catching up these past few days, this place really has perked me up. Thanks xxx

This was a good read BUT I fear with NOTHING mentioned of Chewbacca,I just can't buy it.
I do like flashbacks of Luke and Leia though, but it just seems everything is too on the nose from leaks, believed leaks, stuff we have seen in trailers or pics..
    Colour me skeptical..
    Sorry.
All will be revealed in 3 months.Cannot wait!!
