Sure, but that was only because the hired writer (Alan Dean Foster), working from the finished screenplay, took it upon himself to change it (this was before George’s divine rule over the universe). There’s also anecdotal references to "ducks" and "panda bears" in there.

Most likely Lucas just wanted a unit of time for that dialogue that sounded more ‘spacey’ and wasn’t expecting anybody to care either way. Then he retroactively came up with a way to make sense of it. Which, incidentally, still doesn’t actually make sense because that’s not how you use parsecs. Which SHOULD bring us all right back to remembering that it’s escapist fiction and wasn’t meant to be scrutinized for clinical accuracy.

    Edit:
It’s certainly 'possible' that Finn is force-sensitive to some degree. But, for me, his handling of a lightsaber without hurting himself isn’t any more proof for that than claiming Poe is FS because of his bitchin piloting skills, or Han because of his astounding hyperspace intuition, or R2 because of his super convenient timing.

Although that would have been a funny little throw away: Finn, going into his first saber stance, misjudges the distance and singes a bit of that sweet sweet jacket. Then later Poe calls it out during their reunion.

Poe: “Whoa, what did you do to my jacket?!”
    Finn: “Um . . . “
Poe: “Nah, I’m just messin’ with you, man. I guess it’s YOUR jacket now though, huh? HAH!”

It kind of is... a parsec is a defined distance which just happens to be related to the earth's orbit.
I don't see what's wrong with using it to measure distances between planets and stuff.

I suppose if there’s some planet out there, similar to Earth, that works as the reference model to standardize the measurement throughout that galaxy then it might work. Otherwise though, why wouldn’t you just use a way easier metric that’s based on a known constant: speed of light?

You have the same basic problem with ‘light years’ too. What exactly is a ‘year’ defined by in the SWU? Is it 365 days made of 24 hour days? That works fine for us here, but is that also coincidentally the definition of a standard ‘galactic year’? If so, why?

The ‘why’ doesn’t really matter. It is because it is. You don’t need a convoluted explanation based on some pseudo-scientific rationale. That’s just how things are in this universe. Don’t worry about the details. A ‘parsec’ is a unit of time for some reason? Sure, why not? What difference does it make?

Still not following. Are you trying to tell me you have the moral high ground?

    Please elaborate
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 15, 2016 ---
The parsec was literally only created because it was the easiest thing to use to measure distance to others stars back in like, 1920. A parsec is a just a fancy way of saying 3.08E13km, and that's a fancy way of saying 1.9E13 miles, etc... The only problem is that in the Star Wars Universe, Lucas thought it would be a good idea to take a measurement of distance, and redefine it as a measurement of time.

Like... come on, Lucas, seriously? That's just a recipe for confusion.

Lucas logic: "ahhh my desk is 27 seconds long"
    Us: "what?"

All star wars time measurements come from coruscant, which for plot related reasons is almost identical to earth. I mean, it would just bog down the story if Finn was 398 bogwaddles old with no reference to how that relates to earth time.

This is the point where someone proceeds to write a protracted dissertation on exactly why seconds are a perfectly reasonable way to measure a desk. Complete with visual aids and out of context links to Wikipedia :)

"It makes perfect sense. You just don't get it."

I guess Coruscant must also be where parsecs were first defined. Then everyone else in the galaxy just got on board for some reason. Meh, makes about as much sense as anything else I suppose.

    @Rey24B and @AstromechRecords

    Points 1 and 3
These concepts are to big and important to be set by some comic book or kid t.v show.
By people trying to make a story, without having full grasp the implications of some of these things.

They cannot set president that becomes established law as it were.
They are described as supplements to the movies and as such will some times deviate from them. BUT over issues of importance some hack cannot forever change the way we view sabre and force lore, because he had no idea the only person or people who should be able to use a SABRE is a FORCE USER.

I would describe them as supplemental cannon
And lucas films/disney should establish that as the movies are the main inspiration for all this, and the books and comics and shows are supposed to supplement. they should not be able to establish ( EVEN INADVERTENTLY ) new presidents that either deviate from established traditions or completely contradict previously established lore.

    Point 2
Grevious does say "i have been trained in your jedi art's by count Doku."
As a jedi master turned sith, i think this must constitute Grevious being some kind of amalgamated SITH/DARK-JEDI

From this we must also infer him to be force capable.
You can not train none force users.
Training is educating then about the force and how to manipulate it, as well as sabre training.
