I just realised that while there is most certainly a critical backlash amongst fans, the doomy BO backlash the op seems to believe is happening, is anything BUT genuine. Lmao.

TPM made a lot of money, too. And we know how that turned out.

Nice comparison. Thank god TLJ isn’t bad as that film, the 2017 American and world public is much bigger than 1999=more bums in seats, and more children are going to see it this weekend because xmas holiday begins and they are target audience!

    Happy holidays!

All in all it's a fairly unpleasant state of affairs within Star Wars fandom and where this will go is unclear 'clouded the future is'

I really loved this film but I accept there is a backlash. I don't like it but I accept it. I don't like the fact that so many people hate something I love. I hope with time views will change and I think they will but not for a quite a while.

The best way I can cope with it all is thinking of Marty McFly saying .... "Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet…but your kids are gonna love it"

    It’s a catch 22 at this point.

“Damned if you do, damned if you don’t” type deal.

Humour was indeed marvel level. Rather one than that. Trying too hard. Like "GUYS WERE FUNNY GETTIT, DO YA GETTIT. GENERAL HUX=HUGS FIRST JOKE, AINT THAT FUNNY, DIDJA LAUGH".

The anti Last Jedi petition has now gone over 50,000 signatures and it continues to grow
    https://www.change.org/p/the-walt-d...tar-wars-episode-viii-from-the-official-canon

Also, Thursday box office estimates came out a short time ago and TLJ is 38% below where TFA was on the same day of it’s release. TLJ made $17.5m TFA took in $27,295m
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 22, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 22, 2017 ---
I never said the box office was all doom and gloom, but there is a significant fall off from TFA on weekdays to this point. Only time will tell if that continues, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see a 60% decline over the three day weekend.

The petitions are always jokes. Never achieve anything but dry stale air.

Also Thursday is 19% up from Wednesday according to you! It's recovering! Jumanji, it's nearest competitor, took less than half that!

Now who mentioned day by day fluctuations being a bad things to read the BO from, especially mid week...oh me!
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 22, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 22, 2017 ---
You're still ignoring my points about why that's expected and isn't bad for TLJ.

If it's 38% on Thursday and the kiddies come out to watch movies on weekend, 60% is a dead no.

I agree that the petition is a joke. Of coarse it’s not going make Disney change their mind. I only point it out to show that there is a pretty significant amount of people who are unhappy with the film. 50,000 people in 48 hours is a pretty big number.

Thursday is up, but the week day over day vs TFA is significantly lower. The buzz just isn’t there...I will be very interested to see what the weekend brings

The Last Jedi still killing the competition today. Meanwhile BirthMoviesDeath has a great article about the poll rigging and the comscore.

Here's the scientific breakdown of real audience thoughts:

This movie is a hit. It's doing fine at the box office. There are some fans who didn't like it, but overall most people liked it.

The idea that angry conservatives are the ones responsible for the negative ratings is laughable, when Rian Johnson gave Kylo Ren a ridiculous amount of white male privilege, prevented Rey and Finn from meeting, and had Rey lick Kylo's boots for most of the movie.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 22, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 22, 2017 ---
You're right. TLJ is worse than TPM. At least TPM gave Padme, Anakin, and Obi-Wan some great moments and they were appealing people on some level. TLJ does practically nothing with Finn, Rey, and Poe, sidelining them in favor of Kylo Ren. We'll still be watching Duel of the Fates long after people have given up on this turd.

This film is in fact very polarizing. As box office numbers continue to decline it is becoming clear that this is not the Star Wars film fans wanted to see.

Latest update from Roger Friedman (12/21/17) TLJ suffered a 77% decline compared to same day as TFA

    http://www.showbiz411.com/2017/12/2...ng-77-wednesday-difference-from-force-awakens

"Two years ago, on its first Wednesday past opening weekend, “The Force Awakens” made $38 million.

Last night, on its first Wednesday, “The Last Jedi” made just $16.8 million. That’s a 77% difference, and a little shocking, frankly.

I’m not sure what’s going. Some say it’s because more schools had already broken for holiday vacation back in 2015. Could be.

But there’s some kind of indifference or hostility to “Last Jedi” that I don’t get. I loved it. For true “Star Wars” fans, it’s a must see movie, a really big moment of closure for original fans. It’s also a beacon for the next generation.

Something is definitely wrong, however. Even kids still in school would be at 5 or 6pm shows. And now there are reports that the merchandise is doing so-so business. Me, I want a Porg!

But you can see the discrepancies: by now, “Force Awakens” had banked $363 million. “Jedi” has $278 million. And the gap is widening every day.

“Last Jedi continues to struggle with a shocking 77% Wednesday difference from Force Awakens

The film is clearly a hit, but 77% drops compared to TFA are not a good sign anyway you look at it.

In my opinion the film is going to underperform (in reference to it’s lofty expectations) because it is very polarizing and the numbers are staring to bare this out...In my humble opinion both the way the character of Luke Skywalker was handled combined with his fate left the audience feeling betrayed and sad. Nobody wanted to go to a funeral and the general audience cares far less about characters such as Finn, Po and Rose than they do for Han, Luke and Leia.

I don't disagree with you on the "it's a polarizing movie" part (only insofar as the fans go, anyway), but you're vastly overstating it. This is a "THE SKY IS FALLING!"-level exaggeration of how this movie is doing.

At this same point in time, Rogue One's numbers were nearly 44% down from Disney's revival, and that hardly killed the brand. For comparison's sake, The Last Jedi is just over 23% behind its chronological predecessor, which is pretty standard for a sequel.

The fact of the matter is that, above all else, Star Wars: The Force Awakens vastly overperformed to expectations, and across all fields. Whereas this movie appears to be on the way to 'merely' performing toward the high end of expectations.

Here's an excerpt of an article discussing this (which, if you're interested, is a short read and well worth your time):

Lol jesus... taking us to spin city with your hacky "showbiz411" shtick. I like how that continues to be your only source, because it's the only one backing up your false narrative. Try going to Forbes or something just a bit more legitimate.
