UGH. Sorry, but as much as I dislike TLJ, I don't trust anything RedLetterMedia says about Star Wars. These are the same people who lapped up the Abrams Trek films and TFA for doing everything they supposedly hated in the Prequel Trilogy, and also nit-picked Rogue One to hell and back for nonsense like "recycling ships and designs for nostalhgia", despite the fact that the movie is restricted by the era limitations in which it was set.

Them complaining about TLJ just seems like an attempt to what's fashionable on YouTube, since it's become popular to pick apart this film as of late.

The RLM review was hard to watch, but I think they explained why TLJ failed besides having too much women in it.

There are plenty of reviews on the net that accomplish the same goal, and still manage to be less grating and more concise than anything RLM puts out, not to mention without the vapid hypocrisy.

To be fair, they did not like Star Trek into Darkness, and were cautiously optimistic of TFA, so they're not blindly loyal to JJ Abrams.

But TFA ended up doing a lot of what they reportedly didn't like in Into Darkness and the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy--that being, prioritizing style over substance--and they essentially gave it a free pass, just for tickling their nostalgia in the right places and making things simple and easy to follow.

This is also the same bunch that are so blinded by their OT nostalgia that they actually stated that further stories couldn't work in the Star Wars universe past the original films---no novels, no comics, no animated series, none of that was relevant---the original films were apparently Star Wars at its highest possible creative zenith.

You can think whatever you like about RLM, but I trust their opinion on Star Wars about as much as I treat a deaf man's opinion on music.

I agree with them about Star Wars. T
I agree with everything RLM says about star wars. They are not nostalgic about the OT; in fact the only film they liked was Empire. Go and rewatch ROTJ and it proves them absolutely right. Star wars was nothing more than a flash gordon lookalike that was saved in editing. It was meant to be only one film, nothing more. But then it became a smash hit and people became greedy and wanted sequels. Only ONE sequel in the entire forty year franchise met anyone's expectations. Otherwise, it has been nothing but long line of disappointments that has gone on longer than most of us have been alive.

The more I think about it. The more I realize this trilogy was going to be a failure the moment the reviews for TFA came in. The biggest questions shouldn't have been about Rey. It should have been about all three characters. Rey, Finn, and Kylo. This is their story. Using the excuse he doesn't have the force when the story went through him it's no wonder TLJ turned out to be a disaster.

Rey and Kylo coming together was forced, and it changed the whole story. Their is no way the joining of these two is the story. If they are there wouldn't be a need for Boyega's character. So what is the story? It certainly isn't about Rey saving Kylo. They could have pushed that from the beginning if that was the case. If saving Kylo is the story then they don't believe people would have like it if they added Boyega's character.

Saw that and I agree with what they said

But I disagree that's it's only male viewers that see it that way. There are plenty of female viewers who were disappointed the movie didn't have the traditional male heroic expectations that they had as well.

Yep. There are plenty of female fans upset with TLJ. There's an entire cabal of them posting here.

But of course, people like to pretend that this faction of the fandom doesn't exist. Because that would destroy the narrative about the kind of people who disliked this film.

Some would argue that Finn serves the plot in TFA, the same way Artoo and Threepio served the plot in ANH.

Being the POV characters in the beginning until we get to the main character's arc (Luke, Rey).

Heck. Just like the droids, Finn shows a comedic purpose and argues with BB-8, just like Threepio and Artoo with each other.

Also as being the emotional center of the film so much so, that like Artoo, Finn is the only one injured during the climax. And then he's shipped back to the base where everyone says he'll be ok. Just like Artoo.

Lol that video confirms what I always thought. All three females were propping up the male hero's in the quest to make males become better men.

Holdo poops on Poe for no other reason to prove he is wrong. Then dies.

Leia slaps Poe for disobeying orders then promptly gets put in a coma.

Rose tasers Finn because he's wrong about deserting the resistance even though he's not part of the resistance. She then promptly put in another coma. (Again)

Rey little miss perfect gobs off to a depressed Luke about his hot nephew and then attacks Luke with her stick. Then is promptly told she has no place in the story apart from having the hots for poor beautiful Ben who has done nothing wrong and deserves to be redeemed and becoming the ultimate hero. Turning Rey into a emotionless trophy that can make force sensitive babies.

TLJ is an awful film. As a female we don't need an imbalance we just want something equal. That does not mean tarnishing men. Am not sure where this ethos of wanting something balanced equates to making men dumb. This is why Lucasfilm needs to have more females behind the camera. We just want a decent balanced story line.

As I have said many times on here I will not watch another Rian Johnson film until he learns to write females correctly. I would have had more respect for that video actually focused more on female outcomes but it was too busy berating male fans that it lost its objectives.

No one's ever denied that's why Holdo and Rose were created. It's also why DJ was created as a prop for Finn. And how Snoke was used for Kylo.

But while Rey served that for Luke, she was at the same time having Luke and Kylo used to prop her character arc.

I wish I was as confident as you about Rey having an arc. I see nothing, I see nothing positive at all about her in TLJ. If I start arguing TLJ I can't guarantee I wouldn't say something tactful about Rian. The guy makes me angry then I would be angry with you. I don't want that. I wish I could be blessed with your patience but I don't have that. TLJ and Rian agitate me especially some of the directions he has taken make me want to punch the screen. Am not here to fight and argue. That others video just rattled me because it was for my taste bordering on obnoxious.

Standing ovation for you on this post! I agree with every word of it. As a female, I cannot stand the way the women were presented in TLJ. Presenting them as cold, bossy, shrews who must smack down those dumb men was aggravating and eye rolling. There's no need to tarnish the men as you put it to build the females up. In the PT, Padme fought alongside the men, who were competent, same with Leia in the OT and Jyn Erso in RO. They were all on equal ground. This formula was working just fine for SW, no change was needed. Well I guess we needed our expectations subverted.

Your analysis of Rey is spot on as well, though I'm having trouble with your description of "hot" and "beautiful" to describe Kylo.:p I still can't believe how naïve she was to run after him thinking she could turn him and everything would then be A-Okay. A week earlier, he kidnaps her, she watches him slaughter his father and he beats her only true friend into a coma, but she instantly believes his version of things and runs after him. Oh wait, they touched fingers and she got a vision. If she's supposed to be our ultimate strong female character, then we are screwed.

I keep hoping that Ep. IX can give us some actual substance to Rey. It would be nice to have a fleshed out female lead character, but I'm afraid it's too late, unfortunately.

It's going to be hard to get Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo to a satisfactory/fulfilling destination by the end of EPIX. I just don't think it can be done. Too much bandwidth was wasted in TLJ. If you were a proponent of Ben-redemption, TLJ makes the case for no redemption. Kylo goes from wavering to full commitment to the Dark Side. He has ascended to the role of supreme leader. Without a serious time skip in which pivotal moments occur, there is almost no chance that Ben turns back. And even then, there would be little time to create a story where that happens where Rey also has to become a full on Jedi, Finn actually has to self actualize and do something other than go on another covert mission, Poe has to be established as a leader for the Resistance, the Resistance has to power back up, and we have to include some meaningful growth for Rose (she can't serve as Finn's moral compass anymore... she never should have in the first place).

I don't see how you salvage anything out of this.

I agree, and I've asked before, what am I supposed to be looking forward to in IX? I can think of anything that I'm dying to see. I could care less about Ben's "redemption." That was off the table to me after he butchered his own father in cold blood. I've already seen Rey, daughter of redneck drunks who's accomplished more in a week then Jedi who trained for years ever did, master the force and beat Kylo Ren in a fight. Is that the big duel I'm supposed to be looking forward to? Because we've seen that already in TFA and our wonder girl won. Poor Finn and Poe. They had a good start in TFA and I WAS looking forward to seeing more of them. Too bad their potential was squandered for the new useless characters. That being said, I'm going to be very curious to read the spoilers and audience reaction when IX is released. And you bet that I'll be reading up before I ever consider buying a ticket to the movie. I'm not dragging myself out into the cold December night for another letdown like TLJ.

One of the biggest travesties for me is the portrayal of the women in this trilogy. America has a rich history of strong women. From what Black women had to endure to the Native American women and colonization, and the white woman who were ignored by their own husbands. There is so much Hollywood can draw from, but is too afraid of embracing it's truths.

Rian like some people on media sites and forums were too busy focused on the hierarchy of characters and keeping them in their place. Instead of making a movie that's inclusive. TLJ is American arrogance.

I would tell those people to play the lottery for me. If they know what the people at Lucas films are going to do before they do it then they should be playing lottery, and stop making movie predictions.
