Yup, it's such a great detail. My interpretation is that it shows Luke was still in control of the situation. Still fully ready to defend himself.

After watching TLJ for the 5th time on BluRay, I'm really able to dig into the little things you miss. Maybe I'm dumb and it never hit me until now, but I finally get what Kylo Ren was saying in TFA, "Grandfather, I will finish what you began." (I'm pretty sure that was the exact phrase?). When he kills Snoke and becomes Supreme Leader, he is doing what Vader was never able to accomplish all through the OT once he found Luke.

    perhaps :)

whilst we don't get as much Snoke dialogue as i would have liked (i am braced for @FN-3263827 to jump in and disagree and tell us that the toilet monster needed to be killed asap :D), he does mention Vader to Kylo more than once.. so i wonder if everything swirling around in Kylo's head about his grandfather is in fact directed by Snoke?

"You are no Vader. You are just a child in a mask."

"My worthy apprentice, son of darkness, heir apparent to Lord Vader, where there was conflict I now sense resolved, where there was weakness, strength. Complete your training and fulfill your destiny."

everything he says to Kylo seems to be using the angle of his family..

"You have too much of your father's heart in you, young Solo."
"When I found you, I saw what old masters live to see... Raw, untamed power and beyond that, something truly special. The potential of your bloodline."

it makes me wonder.. does Kylo/Ben know anything remotely close to the truth about Vader?

when he's talking in front of Vader's mask in TFA he refers to him as 'Grandfather' which intrigued me the first moment i heard it. Later in the film he shouts this at Han..
"Your son is gone. He was weak and foolish, like his father. So I destroyed him."

if he looks up to Anakin Skywalker and he wants to finish what Anakin started.. then cutting ties with his family, adopting a mask and taking on a new name makes no sense whatsoever. it would be dis-honoring Anakin.. if that makes sense?

did Luke tell Ben about Anakin? did Luke tell anyone about Anakin?

Interesting points and I don't think you're wrong in your reasoning. I think Anakin/Vader's legacy is very murky among who you ask. Maybe Luke has one view of Vader, and Leia has another view of Vader, and Han Solo had another view of Vader. Maybe there is a story that goes around among the people about Vader, and Ben Solo takes that all in as a kid.

Think of it this way, you're a kid and your Grandfather was known as the 2nd most Evil guy in the galaxy, that has to screw with you as a kid (maybe kids made fun of him). Think of how many kids who grow up with parents who are Actors, Musicians, Athletes and they end up being all screwed up because they have to live with that their whole life. I know that Freddie Prince Jr said that he found out that his famous father committed suicide through a classmate when he was in 6th grade, so maybe Leia/Luke/Han never told him much, and he heard an urban legend that Vader wanted to rule the Galaxy?

Ben didn't find out about Vader until he was grown (per Bloodline).
might not have discovered it until after he'd broke with Luke even.

not sure if that makes it better or worse.
or the fact that it was a galactic scandal and not just sandlot chatter.

even so, growing up with Leia and Han for parents was probably hard enough (in their shadows), but finding out about Vader likely gave him a whole different way of understanding his place in the galaxy. if he felt rejected and unwanted by his "hero" family, then cleaving to his "villain" grandfather actually makes perfect sense. in his mind the roles are reversed. his parents are the villains and grandpa Vader was the hero.

this is also the belief of the FO: the Imperials were unjustly deposed by a corrupt mob. which is why Ben would fall in with them as well.

we also know that yes, Luke and Leia's (and Han's) opinion of Vader was vastly different.

for Ben, finishing what his grandfather started probably didn't start out to mean overthrowing Snoke and ruling the galaxy, but crushing the New Republic and restoring the galaxy to an "ordered" state under one rule. but now he has killed Snoke and taken his place. hopefully we'll see how he thinks it should play out from here: as the idealist who originally put on the mask, or further corrupted by power, anger, and fear?

Have The Last Jedi on now while I am working. I tell you in addition to being excited for when Ep9 comes out I cant wait to see TLJ in theaters again if for no other reason to experience the Hyperspace ramming into the Supremacy. Still one of the most awesome things I have have seen/heard in a theater.

This brings up something. Maybe I just have missed it, but from the evidence I have read Luke didnt even start the academy until after Bloodline. From my thoughts Ben's happened pretty close to TFA. Am I missing something in another canon source?

no, actually Luke was off with Ben and likely others of the "academy" when Bloodline happened
(it's strongly hinted that the two events occur close to one another).
Ben joined the FO about six years prior to TFA, so the two events had to have been close.

I know that they are off exploring, but does Bloodline allude to others at the time? I dont recall it mentioning others. What source for Ben joining FO right after Bloodline?

we get a hint of it when Carise mentions that Luke has disappeared with his "acolytes".

the timeline for Ben joining is established in the Phasma novel, i believe.
though i admit time in that book is a little tricky to suss out because of all the back and forth.
as near as we can tell, though, it's about six or seven years.

Havent read Phasma. So it would have been shortly after Bloodline then so 5-6 years max then since isnt hard set that Bloodline happens 6 years before TFA.

probably for the best ~ hahahaha
other than for the fate of Brendol Hux, it's a pretty bad novel, i think.
And Ren only appears very briefly in it.

Love this video so much of what is said about TLJ is right on the nose with my thoughts. He does also go after some of the toxic figures in fandom as well.

This is kind of hilarious... someone is posting a ton of five star reviews over on rotten tomatoes the last 3 days. I assume it's a person or a few people. It's so easy to fake votes and brigade it. Keep in mind the toxic minority cites that dumb thing every time. They even spam it to Rian Johnson as proof people hate the movie.

I saw a couple of tweets about this because some are getting mad about it.

I got a good chuckle out of that that. There's already 196k reviews and most of them are fake. That person will have to post reviews for weeks to put a dent in the number.
