Where will TFA Ep.7 rank among Star Wars feature films?

My personal favorite of the bunch.

TFA is my new Top 1.

I think ultimately, ignoring episodes 8 & 9, ANH and ESB will always remain top 2, like good old wine...

TFA will rank 3rd.

 

I can rank all 7 films in just three categories

1) The OT as a whole - cant separate them as there all one 5 hour film to me, love all 3. Dialog in ROTJ between Luke and Obi-Wan/Vader/Leia is superb.

2) ROTS - story was good, just lacking in actor delivery

3) TPM/AOTC - least favourites

TFA easily slots into rank 1 - as good as the originals. This is largely due to Driver and Ridley's delivery of

This is what I have been struggling with all day. Trying to figure out where it fits for me, blighted by the fact that this was the most spoiled for a SW movie I have ever been... and that has a negative effect, for me at least. I regret it now.

Quite frankly, ranking TFA against the other saga movies I think is one of the impediments to complete, unabashed love and enjoyment of the movie for me. The question of how does it compare... which can never really be a fair comparison in such an iconic franchise. The movie shouldn't have to be compared, but it inevitably will be whether we want to do it or not.

It has flaws, particularly in that it moves a bit too fast in some places for me... it needed to breathe. But I also thoroughly enjoyed it, much more than any PT movie. So it is no lower than 4th place. Is it better than that? My gut instinct is that it is better than ROTJ, even though the first third of ROTJ contains some of my most favorite scenes for the entire saga on Jabba's sail barge. But ROTJ falls a little flat due to the teddy bear syndrome. But I'm not sure whether it can beat out ANH or ESB... that is until I re-watch it a few times.

So, at the end of the day, I put TFA no lower than fourth but in time maybe as high as second...

 

It's hard for me to say right now (as I've only ever seen the film once... as of now), but I'll say that I'd put it third or fourth.
Definitely better than AotC, TPM, and RotJ, but I also definitely don't like it better than ANH or RotS.
Essentially I'm saying I'm undecided as to whether I like it better than Empire at this point.

I got it 3rd behind Empire and Jedi, and before IV. I preferred Jedi to A New Hope.

 

This is so tough... might need to sit on this for a while to undo the shock of just having seen a new Star Wars film.

If the fighter battle scenes were as cool as the ROTJ scenes, & Snoke was real, & there was no freighter sequence with cartoon aliens then I'd say #1 out of all.

I'm ranking it @ #2 but I am very, very fond of the film except for Snoke. JJ NAILED the Star Wars vibe... really felt like a space age fairy tale... awesome.

 

I voted number 2, OT movies were just that little bit better, don't get me wrong the force is back.

 

I have two rankings. One ranking is for personal preference and the other is for overall quality, in my opinion. For personal preference, I go ROTJ, TFA, ESB, ROTS, ...........................................AOTC and TPM, possibly, equally terrible. For overal quality, ESB, TFA and ANH are neck and neck, ROTJ, ROTS, ..........................................................AOTC and TPM, possibly, equally terrible.

I really enjoyed TFA and look forward to seeing it again in the theater and watching it endlessly on Bluray next year.

But it's not close to the OT, and I don't say that to bash the movie or the new Trilogy. It's just so hard to make something fresh when it comes to a movie franchise when you're up to the 7th Episode.

Creed is a great movie as its also the 7th Episode, but not better then the original Rocky. All these movies are is recycling plot points through new characters and if you can watch them in that context, you can still enjoy them. If you're expecting TFA to = ESB, then you will be let down.

 

ANH and ESB are best from OT
TFA is better than ROTJ and right behind the couple from above.

I agree, I'd rank it 3rd behind ESB & ANH. It sets it up well for future episodes but I'm still waiting for a grittier more 'adult' film similar in tone to ESB, but I wonder with it being Disney if we'll ever get to see that.

 

the second view of TFA was even better for me, hope it's the same for you and everyone else (Still under ANH and ESB to me, but really good movie)

I have only seen it once, I need to see it again. My list goes Empire is number 1, TFA and ANH would be tied but, TFA's acting puts it a little over the top of ANH.

#2 TFA (This could change to #1 or be tied with ESB with repeat viewings)
#3 ANH

 

I've seen it 4 times now and each time I liked it more. I would rank it second behind ESB, tied with ANH - As a movie it is better than ANH in every respect but you'd have to give ANH the originality bonus.

Multiple viewings benefit this movie so much. The first time around I could barely grasp what was going on and after it I was somewhat bothered by what I perceived as too many "deus ex machinas" but pretty much everything is actually explained or strongly hinted at. It's just often subtle and/or a little rushed through.

Also, it really is not a "rehash" at all, imo. The "third death star" thing is a bit jarring and since it appears in the third act it is fresh on most people's minds after the movie but after putting it all in perspective there is really A LOT of new stuff in TFA.
