Where will TFA Ep.7 rank among Star Wars feature films?

  1. 1- Best Star Wars Episode yet made

  2. 2- One of the best but nothing beats the classics

  3. 3- Solid, faith restored.

  4. 4- Meh.

  5. 5- People stop talking prequel criticism and start talking sequel criticism

  6. 6- Forgettable

  7. 7- Lucas hate ends and J.J. hate begins...

I don't think it's possible to know. In the Saga, only A New Hope exists on its own. All other movies rely on what came before and what follows them. I think more objective ranking will be possible only when the entire trilogy is out and with the passage of time.

Subjectively, though, it jumps from third to fourth place, in front and just behind ROTJ. But, I have seen the film only once and I have seen OT gazillion times. I'll refrain from ranking until I see TFA at least 3-4 times. My second viewing is on Monday. :)

I'd say it's visually and technically the best of the seven, but overall I'd put it at three behind the first two films. After the first viewing I wasn't sure about how it compared with Jedi, but during the second viewing somewhere around Rey sledding down the hill on the sheet metal it hit me it was better than Jedi and could give SW and ESB a run for their money except for the originality and nostalgia factor.

After my second viewing, I have to say... this movie will live on as definitive Star Wars.
It is pure joy. Pure emotion. I didn't expect to care so much about these characters, but I really do. Rey and Finn are already as classic and iconic and part of my life as are Han and Leia.

Weirdly, I cried twice during my second viewing (the first being when Han and Leia first see each other; there is so much being said through their expressions).

I've only seen it once so I can't really accurately judge my taste for it. But so far I rank it as my 7th favorite Star Wars film.

I really need to see the whole sequel trilogy play out before I can fully judge it, though. But as a standalone movie, it didn't quite capture the "adventurous fun" that A New Hope and The Phantom Menace did. At the same time, though, it had more depth and substance than both of those movies in regards to what I felt it wanted to achieve with the plot.

You thought The Phantom Menace had "adventurous fun?"

I respect your opinion and all. But how can you then say its a "good movie" then rate AOTC better?

Yes. It seemed fun and whimsical to me. It had jar jar and his antics and pod racing, and general silliness to it. I can't really say that I agree with all of the decisions that were made with The Phantom Menace, such as Jar Jar, but it generally seemed like a fun movie to me.

Tbh, I really liked Attack of the Clones. I re-watched it earlier this week and enjoyed the detective side story with Obi Wan, alongside the gladiator theme towards the end.

I'm fine with you liking it! I just think Episodes I and II are two of the most awful films of the past 20 years.....Watched them again with some friends for a marathon, and it was almost unbearable to watch as well as impossible to go longer than a minute without rolling our eyes. After making it through TPM, just barely, we all rejoiced over the fact that we knew AOTC would at least have, as you said, the Obi-Wan detective story and the end battle. After watching, I honestly cannot decide which I think is worse. Still, though, totally fine if you enjoy them.

    1. ROTJ
    2. ESB, TFA, ROTS
    5. TPM, AOTC (it's a tossup; TPM has better dialogue overall, but the last 20 minutes of AOTC are pretty cool)

Unfortunately TPM now that I'm older is just so boring to me, the only reason I like it is because of the maul duel at the end otherwise I think I'd rate it 7th.

#same. During the first day when we watched TPM and AOFC, we took turns playing the first battlefront on my laptop. After every map, I would turn to the tv and yell "Are they still seriously at the same place!" Also, during both movies each of us asked at least once, "has anything actually happened yet in this movie?" If you ever want to get angry quickly and then take a nap, Episodes I and II are the films for you...Even worse, for me at least, I don't even like the Maul duel, and the stuff I thought I liked about AOTC ended up being tolerable at best.

It's still too early for me to decide where TFA ranks among the films for me. I only saw it once, and like with most of the Star Wars movies, I've found myself selecting elements and criticizing them about how I think those elements should have been different to make the movie better overall.

The Force Awakens is my favorite Star Wars movie thus far. I smile hard saying that after years of buildup and finally seeing the film.
