I think much like Luke going to rescue his friends, Rey will need to leave her training to go help her friends. Nice flipping of traditional gender roles too.

A piece of my mind on this:

The new trilogy is about REY.

Finn is a Hero, the regular guy like us who can do amazing things just because are the right things to do. Finn is the guy we all want to and could be. BUT Finn is in the movie just to help the lead, REY, just like Han Solo in the OT.

I wish everyone could be Force Sensitive not only choosen ones, terminating segregation in the galaxy, where the Force users rule over the non force sensitives, and by the first KK interviews over TFA i thinked that was about to happen. But we don't see any evidence that Finn or anyone else besides Rey could be a Force User.

I think you're right... BUT the force seems to have desires of it's own. Doesn't FINN just seem a little too lucky? Almost as the force is working in his favor, increasing his chances. He might be a lot like Leia.

I just had another idea... are Finn and Rey about the same age? Was Finn given to the First Order to hide him there? Right under their noses? Crazy conjecture I know.

Couldn't agree with you more. Rey has her story (the force/luke). Finn has his (New found purpose). They both have mysterious pasts which they may or may not come to explore completely but for those of you who keep thinking Finn is going to be force sensitive I think you will be let down. I think it's on purpose that they are similar in that they can relate to each other because of their pasts but their destiny's differ even though they may be intertwined. I think Finn will become a sort of Resistance hero ala Han solo and Rey a Jedi. Look at where they end up at the end of TFA. I think this is an indicator. Finns whole "I'm a big deal with the resistance" schtick will be ironic later when he actually is.

I agree that Finn might not necessarily be force sensitive, but ... you do not end a movie with a character in a coma, only to have him wake up in the next movie the same as he was. This would be bad storytelling, similar to several elements from the PT. This is why I created the post, to speculate on what happens to Finn and how he changes and to acknowledge his importance in the force awakens which seems forgotten because of the emphasis on Rey. Rey is the main character, but Finn is really important.

R2D2, C3PO and Obi-Wan actions in ANH moved things foward, but Luke was protagonist of that story not them.

Rey is the protagonist and main character of this new trilogy. Finn and Poe are Leia and Han of this new trilogy.

I don't see how its bad storytelling. He wakes up a member of the resistance. His new found home. We already have the new force user of the trilogy. TFA was called the force awakens because of Rey they aren't going to make the next movie about the force awakening in someone else.

Everytime I think about Finn being force sensitive, I feel like I'm forcing it. I feel you may be right. This is what my gut tells me. Do I wan't him to be force sensitive? I could go either way. I think Finn is unique as he is. Light saber wielding, storm trooper defect with a conscience. That pretty cool to me. At the end of the day I just wan't Finn to kick some butt and get a piece of Kylo no matter how he does it.

Because he is all of those things before he goes into a coma. He has not changed. When you launch a mission to help destroy the base you worked on, when you give them details to help the plan work, you are part of the resistance. It is the coma that causes the change to something different than before. If he does not wake up different than it is an useless element. might as well have him awake at the end of VII to get his goodbye to the old Rey and welcome to the new. Remember this Finn does not know Rey is force sensitive at all.

he does not have to become force sensitive, he has to change and become something new. like a butterfly, or he has to resist Reys' change, which could work. remember he does not know Rey is force sensitive. He was asleep for all of this

Absolutely no reason two stories can't be told in the new trilogy even with Rey being the MAIN character. That's another thing I've noticed, they went out of their way to make sure noone took the spotlight away from the character of Rey. That's why I believe she was written to be perfect, and alot of people feel they downplayed other female characters for Rey (I don't personally think this) by cutting Leia's lines, putting Lupita in CGI and Gwendoline in a suit, so Rey is THE main badass chick.

I don't think there was ever confusion that Rey was THE main focus. The only question regarding Finn was if he would turn out to be a Jedi or not. The whole buildup to the movie Boyega was going around saying how "dope" his character was and that he truly felt Finn was the best character in the movie and just went on bragging about it and felt organic, like he really felt that way. Then all of a sudden two weeks before the movie is out hes going around saying how Rey is his favorite character and that shes the most relatable character, and it felt like he was being told to say that because personally I'm no expert pilot, mechanic, swordsman etc and in no way relate to Rey.

Finn is a really cool character but NO DOUBT he was hyped in the marketing in the way he was to make the duel "twist" (where Finn gets beaten in 25 second and Rey calls the saber over Kylo) more effective. Finn (non force sensitive) vs Kylo then Rey (very force sensitive) vs Kylo has a way bigger impact when we thought Finn was going to be a bad ass going in. It Makes it feel like Rey really has it even more. Which despite some peoples confusion was the point of even putting the saber in Finn's hands.

I feel theres more to it. Theres no way of knowing until Episode 8 though, but speculating for another year and a half will be fun. He just had an interview saying his role in the next movie will be more physical, so I'm sticking to the whole "They left it open" for Rian Johnson to ultimately decide where the character goes.

It was already clear by halfway through the film that the lightsaber was destined for Rey and that it had never called to him, or that he was obviously fs, so why would it be unpredictable that Rey get the lightsaber in the final duel? It's climatic for sure but by that stage of the film it sure as hell was a twist.

Yeah, I think they over did it a little. Rey is a "badass chick" but for some reason it just strikes me as too forced, as though they were more concerned about making her a powerful female role model than writing a character, without considering her gender. Unfortunately that's just a side effect of modern film making where political/identity factors are now an intrinsic part of casting and story direction if only so that the marketing gets more attention and a film can distract critics from any flaws. That being said for some reason Furiosa didn't give me this feeling even though superficially they possess the same character tics but I can't place why I like Furiosa but am indifferent to Rey.

If I had to go all analytical I suppose maybe it's because Rey and Furiosa seem to represent two different ways of writing strong female characters, and maybe a reflection of different aspects of feminism. In Mad Max Furiosa is just as capable, if not more in different scenarios, as Max and is essentially the main character, Max is the audience surrogate like Finn and a better one, but this ability is not overstated nor is it established by degenerating Max's character. Furiosa is a capable female character brought to the same level as the title character in contrast to Rey whose competence is emphasised by Finn's incompetence, not to say that Finn is incompetent throughout the whole film he is useful and competent on quite a few occasions but that only makes the moments when he isn't all the more jarring. Many of you have talked about how cool it would be to flip the gender roles with Finn being saved by Rey etc. but I suspect you all think female characters in that position would be poor characters so why would you simply change the gender? Hell, it's not like Furiosa, or MMFR, was less on the nose feminism with the male patriarchy in the film owning women vs the old female only desert tribe but maybe it was just better written or just made more sense. I can't quite place it.

Yeah, I felt a definite shift in how Bodega was marketing the film in the run up. As if he realised how much he had oversold his character (probably told to do so as part of operation: red herring) and needed to dial it back to emphasise Rey. Perhaps Lucasfilm was anticipating a disturbance in the Finn fandom.....but then again I doubt they pay much attention to online Star Wars forums.

I think you're right. It's the only thing that makes sense for where the characters are. Finn's in the heart of the conflict and Rey is in the periphery.

Plus Finn is already in his rebirth motif.

Then they should just make the SW legends Canon then. That's why they made games that doesnt tie into the SW Saga. You want to see whips and axes? that like making a luke action figure with lightsaber grip. new characters? then you will have generations of new SW fans and they will be like "who the Blast it Luke?" or say that episode IV with luke that episode sucks and I dont care and Ep. XXVI is better cause the Skywalkers aint blast compare to the Rogue Kenobi's and Yoda Maz sex darkside babies and force ghost fighting over the galaxy...

Oh yeah in my Max/Furiosa and Rey/Finn comparison, I just meant how the movie felt like it belong to Furiosa even though it's Mad Max, and the sequel will probably focus on the other character. You even touched on this abit, and I agree with everything you said. I don't think Finn is totally a red herring however, I think they made clever subtle hints to the possibility of Finn being force sensitive but left it open for Rian Johnson, I think that could be said with a number of things in The Force Awakens.
