It had to be done. RJ destroyed/saved SW. He's a hero :)

How? Why?? That doesn't make sense to me. She's not a part of the Skywalker family drama, Kylo even says that. Luke had a responsibility to his family, Rey does not. She ain't 'sponsible for Kylo. She's her own person on her own journey.

Really dude, LOL he has a point, that argument of yours without having seen it reeks of "OMG are you serious". I have lost all respect after a comment like that, you have got to be kidding me. You think for yourself, but you didn't give yourself anything to think about.

That is like saying something taste disgusting, but you haven't even tasted it yet... please try to make that make any sense whatsoever without embarrassing yourself and I will be amused...

I have no real problem with killing the past

But here the past is killed but there's nothing left.

It's like someone saying hey I burned your house down because you needed a fresh start.

Ok there's nothing left but it is your problem.

Giving the story a fresh start is way different than a scorched Earth strategy.

Wow this is '99 all over again!!!

This is definitely a divisive movie.

Some of us had an uneasy feeling about TFA -- it really felt regressive in an unhealthy way. And just as moviegoers, we wanted something more challenging. As fans we wanted to cut ties to the past and see what else SW could do. Most of us, it seems, in that camp were happy with what RJ did. It was scorched earth and house burning, that's what 's got some of us so excited. It feels liberating. Maybe SW will grow up with us and we don't have to relive a moment from our childhoods over and over forever. And hey, not all of us had happy childhoods, know what I mean? ;) Right now, today and tomorrow mean more to me than 1977. I don't want to live '77-'83 forever.

Just trying to clarify what some of us seem to be feeling and expressing. I know it won't change any minds but you know, POV and all of that...

Really? By age 9 Anakin was the only human in an entire galaxy able to pilot a certain vehicle in deadly high speed races, was already having accurate future visions, could "see things before they happen", impressed a Jedi Master, showed 100% telepathic accuracy when tested by all the assembled Masters on the Council and scared the bejeezuz out of them, and commenced to successfully pilot through a deadly battle and escape an exploding ship...all untrained...uh, did I miss something in TFA & TLJ? At 20 something years of age Rey has (1) used Jedi Mind Trick once (2) resisted Kylo's mind extraction (4) levitated some rocks and sabers (3) cross applied already existing fighting skills to a lightsaber (4) had 2 inconclusive "visions". I'm just not buying this Super Force user thing. She freaked Luke out 'cause he was already freaked out. So far, she has not shown any exceptional skills -- that all came from fan reaction.

Piloting skills aside, Luke and Anakin where gifted with that as well, agreed. Perhaps what seems most out of place is she defeated Kylo(which is supposedly now the main antagonist) the first time she ever held a lightsaber, you could argue she already had similar fighting skills, but if we compare Kylo to some lowlifes from Jakku then we are doing a great disservice to his character, and this movie already made a complete mockery out of the bad guys.
Both Anakin and Luke had to train for years before overcoming their opponents, Luke failed the first time he confronted Vader, so did Anakin against Dooku.

It was lazy storytelling, granted, but RJ handled it well, I think. Also, Snoke said that they were equal in power that's why she had to die if she didn't join them. She is the Light to meet his Darkness. But TFA didn't have enough time for development. Kylo had to have some kind of face off or the audience would have felt cheated. Luke would have bested him. Anyone else wasn't a match. So they let Rey have it.

I loved TLJ, but I actually don’t entirely agree with this article.

I don’t see the new path as a complete rift from the old Jedi way. Yoda didn’t say that the old texts were wrong, but that Rey already possessed them. And Luke at the end of the movie says that he actually was not the last Jedi, because Rey is a Jedi.

The understanding of the Force was expanded and opened to greater access. The tree was burned not because the Jedi Way was wrong, but because it was fulfilled.

This also gives Rey nobody a fitting place in the Skywalker Family saga. Because this fulfillment was the direct result of the actions of the Skywalker Family: Anakin’s balance, Luke’s enlightenment, Leia’s hope.

Rey’s awakening and destiny is the first fruit of the Skywalker legacy. The Skywalker Family and Jedi Way are not closed on themselves but are opened, in a sense, to her, and to every nobody. Which makes her the perfect protagonist to the conclusion of the Skywalker Family saga.

I think the point was to separate the Jedi Way from the old Jedi Order. It's the old religion that is finally abandoned, not the accumulated wisdom of it.

Yeah, she used her skills fighting random thugs on Jakku when going up against the Praetorian Guard, the finest melee fighters in the galaxy at this point. Suuuuuuuuure.

That’s true, but I think another important distinction that I see people missing is not what he burned, but the manner and motivation with which he burned it.

Kylo wanted to kill the past so that it would die forever, in order to start something entirely new. Luke seemed to want basically the same thing for most of the movie.

But by the end Luke wanted to burn the past so that it can live on in a more full way. This contrast is shown clearly with his final conversation with Kylo.

The Jedi Order lives on in a new way much like Luke does and Ben’s father does. It lives in Rey and in the new generation of Jedi.

It's scary to see how Disney/LF could have gone on remaking and remixing the OT forever and so many people would have loved it. It would have bene just like the old Bantam books from the 90's. I don't think we'll be seeing TIE fighters, X Wings or any of that tired crap again after this trilogy. It's played out and the story's been told. Hoping once this Phase 1 slate of films is exhausted SW can rise from the ashes and be a zone for free creativity -- which is what the Lucasfilm logo always meant to me. An R Rated movie about a Japanese novelist? Okay, then. An animated movie about dinosaurs? I guess so. A period movie about an automobile maker? Gotcha. An all muppet musical with Davif Bowie? Sure thing. What I realized is that I loved all those movies and part of it was because they were all different and nothing like SW :)

Yea but fun fact, Pablo Hidalgo confirmed that Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, and Snoke are all characters that evolved from Lucas’ treatments

Totally agree. It was more of a cleansing burn so something better can grow from the ashes.

That’s not what I meant. I was alluding to (apparently poorly) how the PTs were good ideas with terrible execution, which was basically what the poster I quoted was saying.
