I agree it messed up the ST.
But in all honesty I cannot say that the problems come from TFA.

    On the contrary.
Rey was not a mistery box. She's a no one, as TFA said pretty clearly.
Whomever you're waiting for they're never coming back.
We spend too much time thinking about that.
But one cannot say that in that movie the question is left open.

    Everything else was simply ingnored.
Not just "the mysteries" but the characterization of the characters.

Finn's arc is a reboot of that of TFA.
Poe's arc is everything but original or innovative. It's a clichè.
And the worst thing is... that Poe in TFA was another character.
And far more interesting regardless the screentime, just because
he wasn't the hot shoot pilot with a super ego and a lot of testosterone.

Rey deals in this movie with her orgins. But truth to be told in the end...
what's the difference whit what happened in Maz's caste?
What is the improvement? There's not a real one.
The way the issue is handled only served the purpose to build up the bond plot.
    Thus Kylo's arc.

Now, I may like the idea of Kylo becoming the new Supreme Leader.
But again... it's not a compelling evolution of the character at any rate.
What is Kylo Ren seeking? Power?
Before that sceen I've thought he was a little brat seeking attachment.
Or to rephraze, someone struggling with his emotions.
That Snoke was too powerfull and messing up with his mind etc...
Some said before he was even born.
Then suddenly... the epiphany: Kylo's seeking power and was plotting all the time.

If you compare TFA and TLJ the contradictions, the inconsistencies, the plot holes are too much to be ignoed.
Add to that novels and comics and it becomes a farce.

But that's up to Rian Jhonson (and LF)
    This is not good storytelling.

Those we've seen are twists for the sake of twists.
This is the contrary of what RJ said he wanted to do.

I may acknowledge one may like his style.
But I believe we should ackowledge that he was simply not intereted in making a movie
that makes sense in the context of a trilogy.

Side note: mods, don't you think we should merge a couple of thread?

I liked it, I'm going to see it again tomorrow, so I can form a proper thought about it tho. It's a lot to take in.

Story was pathetic. I honestly feel like there's a bit to many fake marketing made accounts on here saying how "they need to watch it again and again". I'm out on Disney's fake Star wars.

Posting in this thread out of the 18 trillion inane "ooh ooh ooh me me me post in my reaction thread"s because this one contains the poll, which will at least prove somewhat meaningful in illustrating a certain point.

For now, all I'll say is two things:

    1. GTAC

    2. Strictly speaking, it's actually not RJ's fault how bad the movie is, as he is physically incapable of making anything better.

edit: GTAC isn't an acronym; it'll become clear later on

Hi there. New to the forum, nice to meet you all.

This film was indeed disappointing, and it's very easy to work out why: If you want to make a trilogy truly work, book or film, you should have the same writer or group of writers working on the general direction of the trilogy's story and its arc. It was absurd to offer the director RJ so much freedom as a writer and allow him to do what he wanted with the characters and storylines he inherited from TFA.

I actually liked TFA quite a lot. As a Star Wars fan (I mean the 1977 movie, which now people call Episode IV and A New Hope to avoid confusion, I suppose, but that for me will always be "Star Wars", the film I watched at the age of ten in the cinema and fell irreversibly in love with) I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that TFA echoed the themes and characters of that first emblematic film. It just felt right. Good writing is generally not about originality, unpredictable twists, capricious settings and crowd pleasing moments. Good writing is usually more about channeling the familiar, creating a world that resonates with the audience and it is relatable at an emotional level, and TLJ had very little of that. Kylo and Rey's telepathic antics, although of a cringe-inducing nature at times, were engaging as they somehow suited the arc established in the first film for those two characters and RJ explored that aspect in an original and interesting way. But story wise little else worked.

There were too many superfluous characters and plot lines in TLJ. Finn and Rose on that hideous Montecarlo planet and all that sanctimonious lecturing about exploitation, weapon trade and animal rights just sucked. Luke and Rey's interactions in the island should have been written with much more care. No wonder Mark Hamill could not quite get RJ's vision... Luke's tossing of the lightsaber over the cliff is the perfect metaphor for what RJ has done with the film he inherited from JJA and the 1977-1983 Trilogy. "Kill the past if you have to", says Kylo, voicing RJ's thoughts more than anyone else's...

Shame that the story of Luke and Rey were not heftier and better realized. A reluctant Luke and an eager Rey should have been the heart of the movie, with Kylo triangulating and creating conflicted feelings in Rey. Forget Montecarlo and that Mount Calamari or whatever siege calamity, those plot lines were just dribble IMHO. The best thing of those sequences were the comedy gold from Domhnall Gleeson as Hux, Serkis's voice and Adam Driver's ever engaging Kylo, such good actors. Anyway, hopefully the next installment will resolve the story vacuum this film has created and recovers the focus and sanity of TFA.

Fantastic movie. Great to see a director with the 'nads to do something different with SW.

Visually creative, emotionally heavy, well acted - Porgalicious. Though I would've preferred Snokey to hang about for a bit longer, his scenes were great. Hamill was astoundingly good.

Whether or not people like it is no bother to me, I liked it, so that's good enough for me.

After seeing the movie and reading through the reactions of the fans i am honestly shocked.

Rian created something that was new, fresh and for me totally unexpected and i loved it.
I sat in the cinema with tears in my eyes when the movie was finished. Seeing my childhood hero die, not in the huge manner i always imagined, but in a way that for me felt truly right. For me the humor was on point and many people who where in the cinema with me felt the same. If you like the jokes someone writes is surely down to personal taste but for me it worked. The Story takes twist and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat for 2 1/2 hours. There are just so many layers to the movie you are never sure where the story is going to go.

The one thing that did not work for me was the scene with Leia floating in space.

And to all those who think that Rian ruined Star Wars for them nobody forces you to stay on this journey. We are all just passengers and if you dont like where the train is heading you can leave. I am not saying that criticism is not good but honestly the level some of these remarks are made... i am happy that i am not living such a bitter and hate filled life.

I like the movie overall. It was sad to see Luke go, although not completely unexpected. I'm assuming that he will return as a force ghost for 9.
The movie's overall tone still felt like Star Wars with a few twists. The Snoke death was unexpected and shocking to me but I hope it wasn't a cheap gimmick at the cost of getting a major plot twist.

The funny thing is that before the movie went out, I was deadly sure that people will complain !

What I absolutely didn't expect is that I will be one of them :D

The fact that I had the opportunity to go see it again tonight - and I didn't - says it all.

And NO I didn't like it because in my head there was a different story I didn't like it because it was sloppy, irreverent to lore, uneven, and, despite its shocking and tense nature, somehow boring.

Giving it a 5/10, will lose the will to live again

Might I ask why you find it sloppy? Or irreverent to lore? Or uneven? Because it seems like you’ve got some strong opinions on the matter, so I think that it would be best to cite the reasons why; even if others here disagree with you, it’s all par for the course.

And it’s a shame that you didn’t go to see it again. After my first viewing I didn’t even have a solid reaction, it was just: wow, well i guess that exists now. But after my second viewing? The movie’s beautiful, well told and thought out (for the most part), and probably the most original take on SW since ANH.

After reading the synopsis leak I was very disappointed and my expectations sank. Now im your average star wars joe.
Meaning I have not vested my self in reading legends...canon stuff....novel and comics. But enjoyed the movies in a casual way I suppose.Overall I liked TLJ.It certainly had some flaws but in general a very good popcorn flick which I want to view again.Right now I do not know where to rank it among the other episodes. But I found it to be more enjoyable then TFA and Phantom Menace.

one of the worse for me, it had NO story...it went nowhere.. acting was a lot better than 7 but that didn't save it.. too many jokes... to many female leads, and some amazingly stupid scenes ( leia's space walk? )

I can pick it to bits from the start to the end if i wanted too but i dont want all the hate back, its my PERSONAL view and its a movie i wouldn't watch again and i've been invested in SW since day 1 they hit the cinema's ( yes im old )

i thought the direction and general tone of the movie as ace, more original Star Wars in feel than TFA, in fact. it felt tense and epic throughout, the only thing is the plot points remained simple, very little was expanded upon and saving lots of potential twists/exposition in 9 to make the trilogy as whole salvagable.

it does seem like they're writing it as they go along which i'm not keen on, the lack of an overarching narrative arc is palpable. 9 has a lot of work to do to tie this all together (looking at you, Plagueis) :D

I thought the movie was great but I must agree with what one person said at the midnight premiere in Melbourne: There were certain aspects of TFA that were completely ignored in this movie.

    1. The significance of Leia and Rey's hug wasn't explained.
Perhaps my biggest question of all is: Was Ren completely messing with her?

Well it's 1.40am here in the U.K. and I've just got back home from my first viewing and I really, really enjoyed it. It's late so I'll not go into a lot of depth as in eight hours from now my second viewing starts.

A lot to process however and I'll have more thoughts no doubt after my second view.

Despite knowing a lot of the plot in advance to actually see it played out on screen was a different matter completely. My advice to anyone displeased by either the plot but is yet to see the film my advice would be give it a chance until after you have seen it. That's only fair really. Some scenes play out differently on screen to how you read them.

I was expecting to feel conflicted leaving the cinema like I did with TFA but I left very happy, despite my favourite ever character bexoming one with the force and I thought that scene was handled well.

Can't wait to see Luke's return as a force ghost in Episode 9 as he'll be back without a doubt. "See you around Kid" said menacingly, he'll have a big part to play yet I expect.

Can't wait to see it again in eight hours. It's not a perfect film (lets face it what films are really) and is daring at times but it's a solid movie and a very welcome addition to the series for me.

I wasn't expecting it to surpass ESB and that would be a very tall order with the main ingredients Disney have put into this trilogy, which I feel hasn't been the best but Rian did well with what he inherited from JJ I thought.

I loved it. It avoided all the typical cliches and fan service and gave us something new. Carrie Fisher's death is a real problem for the story going forward. She was going to be a huge part of the story in the final confrontation with Ben.
