If Luke didn’t make this brief error, there wouldn’t be a ST story to tell. Johnson had to compromise somewhere with Luke. He had to go against then character we knew from the OT. MH found it hard to swallow but it was the right move. Having him momentarily think he had to kill Ben for him to immediately know it was wrong (but for Ben to wake up and get the wrong idea) was a genius move.

Luke is dead, we won't see Leia again. This is the trilogy about Skywalker family, so I'm little confused.
If Rey's parents are nobodies, then the only living Skywalker is Ben.

My theory is that Kylo lied to Rey about her parents, and that she really is a Skywalker. No way that her parents are some deadbeats from Jakku.
It makes sense, Ben will probably be killed off in EP IX, so someone has to continue the Skywalker bloodline.

    First, welcome to the cantina!

Second, what were they thinking? Oh, that's an easy question to answer..

This is NOT Spargo's original video. He has reposted this version rather recently where he talks slooower and doesn't try to shove 17 questions in 30 seconds down your throat thinking you wont pause the video and realize you actually know the answers to most of them simply from viewing TFA.
He still can't explain why the prequels are actually better. It's one thing to $#!%post, Nicky, it's another to make a case.
Nonetheless the predecessor to this was all over the fandom in the waning days ot 2015, trust me on this, I recall it vividly(grrr..).. So the response to this was to drag Rian Johnson back into KK's office in January 2016 and order him to rewrite an already finished script for the Ocho. Note that everything you mentioned cannot be found in the Lucas Six. No space floating(although Jar-Jar deserved it), Han never milked a Taun-Taun, no crystal foxes, R2 served cocktails.. close, And while Kenobi did ride that thing on Utapau he never quite sent a stampede of 'em tearing through that hole. So it looks KK and RJ just went down a list titled "$#!% George Lucas didn't shove into the Prequels" and figured out what would still fit in Rian's story.
With that said, now with 2 screenings under my belt, I have to say that going in with a proper frame of reference I recieved this movie a lot better the second screening. It is an amazing deconstruction of the fundamentals of Star Wars. Rey was a lot more polished.
Three major issues hamstring this film. This film felt like it had 4 acts, not three. And it really feels like it could have concluded after act 3; Krait felt like it was only really there for Luke/Kylo.. again, to give disgruntled fans the "Luke ex Machina" finish they expected in TFA. Second, the film isn't just taking pages from Battlestar Galactica, it's taking half the book. 400 resistance fighters are left at one point, by the end the whole damn resistance could fit comfortably in the Falcon. Third, the entire premise of the MacDuffin requires you to ignore the fact that Star Wars has homing beacons, all the while being informed that they need to keep a super special homing beacon going for Rey to get back. When the bad guys jump right out of hyperspace behind you, you probably got a homing beacon on your ship. What Rian did here was take the premise of "33" from BSG and try to jettison the Olympic Carrier aspect in favor of.. a rant about money and animal rights. No, seriously, he's hot-wiring this 'don't be a hero' subplot that gets almost everyone killed.
I walked out of this movie wondering what is actually left to be done in 9.. The story appears done atp..
Speaking academically here: when you're trying to fix so-called problems in your franchise, you do need to ask yourself two questions. First, is it actually a problem? And second, is it worth it to do so? Most of the people who complained about TFA's "lack" of originality have an even bigger problem with the fact that Disney owns Star Wars in the first place. They're not going to be happy with anything you do. Anything. And that's just the way they're going to be.
Originality, I've said it before and I'll say it again, it ain't all it's cracked up to be.

I made a post for the JCC regarding this but it's down for me at the moment so I'll post it here because I think it's a good articulation of my feelings on this. It gets slightly inflammatory towards the end but I can't really help that.

"I've been thinking about Luke's actions and Ben's turn as it was revealed in The Last Jedi. I think the most effective way to break down what's wrong with this is to look back on the moment when Luke had the wounded Vader at the point of his lightsaber. Think about the kind of person Luke had been fighting at that point. Think about the kind of temptation that he overcame. He had a man who was the butcher of thousands, the murderer of an order, the enforcer of an oppressive regime, the killer of children at his mercy. However, even as a young man filled with rage in the heat of battle, he relented. Even then, Luke looked past the cruel sable visage, the sinister appearance, the atrocities he had committed and saw a man who was afraid. Who was uncertain. Desperate. A prisoner. His father.

Thus, he threw aside his weapon, faced someone who was practically death incarnate and refused to commit a killing that countless others would have rationalized because he saw a suffering man rather than a monster and refused to become a slave. Another cudgel for the Emperor to use up and throw away. Even as a young man under duress, he perceived the cycle and saw through the Emperor's intent. He stayed true to himself even under the expectations of his masters and massive emotional duress.

The fact that Luke couldn't do the same as an older and wiser man for his own nephew, a troubled boy, after such a spiritual triumph is inconceivable. Mind-boggling. Insulting, even. I wanted to find some substance in this. I wanted to grasp onto something that I could appreciate here but I simply cannot. It feels like a totally unnecessary regression and a pock mark upon one of the greatest climaxes in the franchise's history in service to the stories of a bunch of characters I simply can't give a fraction of a Blast about. What an absolute mess."

I kinda disagree here. The fact that Luke found the wisdom to not give in to his hate and kill Vader (although he momentarily thought of it), it doesn't mean that he is certain to make wise and generous choices all the time.

Don't forget that his responsibilities were a lot more as a Jedi Master, he had students to protect and he certainly wouldn't want to see the same things happen all over again.

Let's also not forget that Luke's training was a few days with Obi Wan, a few days on Dagobah and whatever he did by himself... He never had proper teaching, so why is he supposed to be the ultimate, flawless Jedi Master?

If Luke didn’t make a momentary error, how would they have taken the story forward? There wouldn’t have been a story if Luke hadn’t made a mistake and hadn’t exiled himself.

Frankly, if this was the best Lucasfilm had to offer, perhaps this story was better off having not been told.

    Watched it again, fair enough
Ben with the back-hand strike indeed

Am I the only one who would prefer a Luke's Jedi academy spin-off over SOLO or an Obi wan movie ? (over SOLO at least)

Well, that’s the point. Either compromise somewhere or don’t make the ST. I’ll take the compromise- I thought it was well done and minimised impact.

Again, if you were writing the story what would you have done with Luke?

Luke Skywalker seriously contemplated killing a child based off of an assumption to the point of drawing his lightsaber over him. That's a godawful compromise.

The gravity of the kind of situation we're talking about makes it otherwise.

Those same teachers said that he should have stayed and prepared to face Vader in order to kill him. In a matter of speaking, he surpassed his masters' philosophies and carved his own path. In a time in which he had even more to lose. Meaning, in order to contrive this entire trilogy, they had to have Luke go back on the ethics that were derived from the most difficult decision he had ever made, cheapening his journey and his conflict for a set of characters that are entirely comprised of empty facsimiles and wasted opportunity. Again, it just does not seem worth it.

There were some good moments, some moments that turned out far better than my perception of what would we be (based on available information) but having literally just left the theater, I hated it. I didn't think could ever hate a SW movie and I somehow did. I don't think I've seen more visually stunning effects and beautifully captured imagery applied to a story burdened with so many disappointing "misses", cringeworthy logical inconsistencies, and tragic under developments. I am stunned at what I waited 2 years to see.

I would preffer a Jar Jar Binks spin off instead of Solo, but I would so much like to see Ewan as Obi again!

A Jedi academy spin off, may be a good one, but I believe they will cover that ground with books and comics...

He didn’t seriously contemplate it. The idea took hold of him but for a fleeting moment but he rejected it. Again, what is the alternative? He had to make a mistake somewhere along these lines. It’s either that or he’s infallible and we have no need for Rey...or indeed a good reason for how the FO and Kylo rose to power. And even if the story was able to get that far, how boring would it be to have perfect Luke teaching Rey? The story would’ve been dull.

Personally, I loved what he did with Luke and the Jedi. He kept Lucas’ canon whilst at the same time showing their flaws. Yoda’s like about masters all being failures and this being the best lesson for their students was in the money. It’s something that we parents understand all too well!

Also, the amount of porgs we got in the marketing I thought their somewhat limited screen time was spot on.

I liked them but too much would have been a negative for me.

Fleeting?! He didn't think of it and go "Nah, that's sadisitic." He drew his weapon near him while he slept. That's enough. Besides, like I said before, I'd prefer it if this trilogy wasn't made in the first place.

I think so too unfortunately... Most will be in books.
A jar jar movie could unironically end up being somewhat of a journey trough stuff we haven't seen before lol
