I love RotS. If you put it in the top half of a Star Wars movie list at this point you might just be trolling.

Interesting to see the slight change there now that the battle lines have been drawn. ;)

Maybe I'm dumb, but this doesn't make sense. If you like it, how is it trolling to rate it high?

(not even withstanding the subjectivity of taste,, of course)

I still don't get your point??? I like ROTS and it is 4th place (and it has always been there in many lists where I ranked SW movies). So why do you say I'm trolling???

I believe he means that he loves ROTS, but to put it high up on the list with the quality of films in the saga is just trolling. I wouldn't say trolling, but I would say objectively speaking its not a very good film either - but its SW so I love it still.

Subjectivity of taste is the only way it would make sense. If you are making a list purely from a, "this is a ranking of which movies I enjoy the most" then have at it.

My assumption with any ranking is there are subjective and objective factors. Maybe that's not the case here.

I didn't say you were trolling, here I'll quote myself for you.

Regardless, you and @darth sputnik were not the main offenders in my post but I had to include both of your rankings to give context.

I guess I just assumed that's what these lists tend to be. Unless Roger Ebert happens to have an account here. :p

When I first watched TLJ, I really liked it but wasn't quite sure where to rank it. After multiple viewings, I believe the only films I can put ahead of it are ESB and ANH, at least as far as actual films go. As for my list of personal favorites...TLJ has done the impossible and dethroned ROTS. Simply put, I think Rian made a masterpiece.

a little off topic....but I know the backlash is real. my best friend of nearly 40 years HATES TLJ and grew to hate it the more he watched it. We've seen every SW movie together in the theatre since ANH and were both lifelong fanatics. he now feels the saga is irredeemable. it's genuinely heartbreaking. anyway, this is partly why I started this thread -- because I've witnessed how intensely opinions have shifted, firsthand.

Hopefully Solo helps warm him back up to the series, and maybe IX will change his mind about the ST, too.

Because even if you didn't like TLJ, there's no denying that the trilogy is hardly finished.

I mean the user I quote below just said it the exact way I mentioned. He has his list of what he thinks are the best Star Wars movies and then he has a personal favorites list.

The two are very different in my eyes. Someone could put the Clone Wars animated movie on top of their personal favorites list and I wouldn't think twice about it.

RotS is a movie that was slightly rushed because lucas and Co. "wasted" (I luv tpm ) a whole movie in the trilogy to tell us how palpatine became chancellor and how they found lil ani.
Still RotS is an absolute blast from start to finish (especially the last 40 minutes !!!) and easily the most underrated/underappreciated movie in the franchise.

................. also the best movie in the franchise with ANH and ESB. (imho)

Ian McDiarmid in 2017 in Orlando said it best.. "It's always got to be the story that everyone relates to. Have principal characters that you can identify with OR NOT... and it's got to have some kind of moral trajectory."

Force Awakens and TLJ are providing that and more. (artoo)

I love ROTS too. It's #3 on my list, behind only E4 and E5.

As for the original question, no my opinion of E8 has not changed with time. I have noticed more things about it but, quite honestly, nothing that changed my opinion.

My opinion of this film has always been high. It really feels like a SW film tailored-made for me, with its off-kilter humour, classical film references, great acting, deeply intimate cinematography, nice depth of themes and all of that served in a form of a SW. Yeah, I adore TLJ and the fact that the same dude who directed ot is going to create a whole trilogy makes me wait impatiently for the future of Star Wars.

I enjoyed it a lot on my first viewing. Then I saw it again, liked it quite a bit still. The third time, it really went down and the more I thought about it, the more it’s only become a “meh” movie. I admire the movie but there’s a lot I thought was flat.

Lots of moments of brilliance but also parts that felt lazy/contrived.

We are two movies in this new trilogy, and by the end of this Act 2, I have no idea where this is going or the dynamics of the characters. There hasn’t been enough for me to invest in or have me excited for episode 9.

If this new trilogy is essentially a remix of the OT, and nothing that the heroes from the first three meant anything, why should I care?

Yes. I have posted my recent thoughts in other threads, but my first and second viewing were like night and day. My first viewing in December was a bad one, as I literally hated the movie for several reasons (Luke flipping the saber, Leia flying, etc). I took some time to process everything and not rush to judgement with a second viewing and finally watched it a 2nd time on BluRay the other day.

Wow, what a difference 3 months can make! I really really liked it and looking forward to watching it again this weekend. I think I was shocked by certain scenes that took me out of the movie the first time and I never really got a chance to watch it in the right context. The 2nd viewing for me was all about knowing certain scenes were coming and I could focus on the narrative and the movie as a whole.

I'm glad I gave it another chance as I was livid back in December, but cooler heads prevail. Thumbs up for TLJ!

Hasn't changed for me. I still love it. Not saying it's perfect, or the best movie ever, but it's still great, imo

Also I don't get the dislike for Rose. Mainly when people say she's armature. I mean, she is because she hasn't had alot of experience. She has to start somewhere and I'll bet she gets lots more movies to learn with.
