Unlike Episode II and V ending all hopeful, I hope this one ends dark and powerful. We have never had that sort of impact for a Star Wars ending in the middle of a trilogy and I feel like that would change the tone of a trilogy in a way that betters the storyline so that Episode IX can be even more powerful afterwards. Would love to see Kylo Ren get redeemed but it's a 50/50 shot right now. Wouldn't it be weird if 9 ends with an evil victory and we see redemption in the next trilogy?

Hopeful that they would get Han back and Lando and Chewie flying off into the "sunset". Sounds pretty hopeful to me.

OK, I've got one, for real.

At the end, there's a promise that "I'll come back for you" - presumably said to a character who faces a fate as-yet-unknown.

(I like the idea that this could be a leitmotif in the ST - "I'll come back for you." It's shown up twice already.)

As for who says it to whom, that's fun to speculate. It'd be a nice bit of 'rhyming' if the character whose fate hangs in the balance is Ben Solo. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just saying.

...to Hux? You mean the roles will be reversed in episode VIII and Ren gets to rescue the General? Oh my god, this would be amazing.

    Just joking around.

this made me laugh so hard. i can just see Ren ditching Hux on some backwater swamp planet, Hux up to his shins in mud, hair all awry, mouth agape: wtf Ren??? don't just leave me here! and from the nice dry clean cockpit of whatever shuttle dumped him, Ren's all: oh don't you worry, i'll come back for you, i promise!

i actually have no idea who Ben would be saying it to.
maybe Rey goes Dark and Ren Ben decides to defect but she won't leave with him.
or maybe he ditches his mother to protect her from assassins.
or maybe Luke is wounded and Rey is abducted and Luke convinces him to go after her.

Star Wars should have ended with Episode III.
Therefore, Episode VIII shouldn't even exist.
The sooner this tired and bloated franchise is shut down the better.
Because god help us all after the unmitigated disaster that was Episode VII.

You can pretend they don't exist and stay home when the movies are released in theater.

The second part of a trilogy is always the darkest, setting the elements for the climax in Episode 9.

    In Episode 9:

    Snoke will be defeated
Kylo will be redeemed or killed
The First Order will be destroyed

Rey's character must go through a story arc. She will discover things that might induce her to be tempted by the darkside of the Force.
Her vulnerability was clearly established in Episode 7 : her search - wait for her parents.
This element will be used against her tp corrupt her, bring her closer to darkness.

Also established in Episode 7 is how deceptive Snoke can be... he managed to turn Kylo against his family.

What I see in my crystal ball is the following:

Rey spends most of the movie under Luke's teaching and protection.
Snoke wants Rey as an apprentice.

Somehow (is it true or not... we will know in Episode 9), he manages to convince (probably via Kylo) Rey that Luke is responsible for the death of her parents and that Luke is the one that abandoned her on Jakku, fearing she would eventually avenge her family is she knew the truth. At the end of Episode 8, Rey leaves with Kylo.

On the political side, after the peace treaty fails because of a terrorist attack, Resistance is designated as responsible for the tragedy.

Leia and leaders from the Resistance are arrested.
Finn is captured by Phasma (with the help of a traitor Finn fell in love with)

Poe regroups with remnants of the Resistance on a secret base.

Interesting ending but it seems that both of our protagonists have been captured/turned at the end of this film, leaving only Poe. Do you think that Poe will rescue Rey and Finn in IX? Or will Rey just rescue herself again? I see the benefited drama of having Rey going off with Kylo/turning to the dark side but why do we need Finn to be captured by Phasma?

Just seems like too many protagonists in distress to me.

Is this a peace treaty between the NR and the FO? Why would they have that after Hosnian Prime has been destroyed? To jump straight from that open declaration of war to a peace treaty in VIII wouldn't make sense.

Again just my crystal ball ;)

I don't think Rey is in need of being rescued, she turns her back on Luke to follow Kylo to go meet with Snoke. My guess is that it will be probably up to Luke, Leia & Maz in Episode 9 to counter Snoke's plan. I am pretty sure Kylo is also a key.

As for the "peace treaty", what I meant was more like non-agression agreement, a Truce.
The way I see it unfurl :

    - Leia wants the help of the Republic to lead a full scale attack on a weakened and disorganized (what she thinks) First Order.
    - The Republic decides they would first try a diplomatic approach instead of starting another galactic war.
    - Poe is in a secret mission to uncover what's left of The First Order, what he finds out is scary.
    - Finn (since he knows more than anybody else about the First Order) is sent along the Republic ambassador to meet with the ambassador from the First Order (Benicio Del Toro).
    - They meet on a planet but an assassination attempt is orchestrated by Phasma.
    - It was a trap. The resistance is then accused of wanting to trigger a full scale galactic war. Leia, the daughter of Darth Vader is arrested.

Of course, this is a speculation thread after all but I thought it would be nice to discuss and debate some interesting theories.
So Rey will come back from the dark side of her own volition? Or will Kylo redeem himself and consequently her as well? Either way someone's going to be rescued unless Snoke wins in the end.

I notice you didn't include Finn, so he will need rescuing I assume: a la Han in ROTJ. A common theory for this poor benighted character.
I don't know, to me the attack on the Hosnian system seems like as open a declaration of war as any I've seen. Either the Republic is destroyed and the FO starts taking over the galaxy or the Republic is alive and desperately defending itself against attack.

So both Rey and Finn end the movie with the FO? Finn as a prisoner and Rey as a voluntary recruit. That WOULD be interesting.
I've see both scenarios offered (and boring) but never at the same time.

I can see the FO taunting Finn that Rey is with Kylo now.
I can see Kylo telling Rey don't even think of betraying him since the FO has Finn.

Fin gets captured by Fasma, after a intense pursuit, and sent for reconditioning.
Rey mounts a rescue retrieving fin and taking him back to the rebel strong hold only to realise to late that fin in now working for Kylo Ren, and has given the first order the location to the rebel base. fin kills Luke and kylo kills general Leia.
Rey faces both kylo and fin, when enter rays real parent (************) The End
