If you were left reeling by the direction TLJ went and it left you not caring about what happens in IX, what will J.J. have to do or say to get you excited about seeing EpIX?

I won't apologize for how I feel about TLJ. I wanted to love it and I was gutted after seeing it. Nobody can change my mind, not even me. At this point, I would have no desire to rush out and see EpIX. I was so intrigued by the questions J.J. posited in TFA and the possibilities of a reunion of the siblings, igniting the green, etc etc.
If they want to win me back over (they really are concerned about ME) they should

    1. Bring back Luke

That's it. That's all they have to do. Bring back the REAL Luke who knew right from wrong and would never abandon his family or murder his family or dye his beard. Do that and I'm on board. Otherwise, I'll stick with Ep I-VII. If you loved TLJ, I bare you no ill will. I understand you like what you like but understand I can't make myself like what I don't like.

One of the problems with "not caring" is that TLJ left no "hooks" as to what happens next. This is something a good marketing campaign can fix. Just make a good teaser with exciting footage, some mysteries, unfamiliar characters in cool outfits, a couple of good quotes and taglines, and the "caring" would come back. To most people, at least.

I actually want that because it would nicely rhyme with Vader dying for Luke.

This is not how a strong female character works.
But since I don’t take Rey as a strong female character, by any any scratch or mean, until now...
    it could be.

That's a tough one to answer.

To the OP; The only way that JJ could bring back Luke that didn't seem contrived, would be to reveal that what we saw happen TO HIM at the end of TLJ...wasn't his death, and it's a distant belief that I haven't yet let go of.

When I saw Luke disappear, I thought "Uhh,wait...not yet...too soon...not enough accomplished...not a good enough exit for Luke...and that can't be it." I'm still holding onto the belief that he's not actually dead (yes, call me hopeful...or foolish), and that we only determined in our own minds that he was dead, and NOWHERE has it actually (and definitively) been said that he's dead...not even in the novel, which I'm hoping can't be purely coincidental, but actually carefully planned all along.

Now, you'll keep in mind that I will never allude to the fact that I LOVED TLJ, because there were certain aspects of it that I disliked enough to be left with a bit of a hollow feeling at the end, but it's SW, and I'll always be a fan that keeps collecting the memorabilia and owns every movie...but I want Luke, give me that. I'll always be around, but dammit, the "Luke incident" has left kind of a mark on me that shouldn't be there.

It has been said that Ep IX will end in a manner that will tie all of the trilogies together, but that statement has never been elaborated upon, and I think it'd be a delight for that to happen...to incorporate certain story elements, whether it be characters, references, or whatever, into one movie that draws all 9 movies into a nice package.

    Things that would give me new hope;

    1. Luke being alive.
    2. Seeing Ahsoka Tano.
    3. Ezra Bridger.
    4. Mara Jade having been Luke's "love interest" (i know, I know), and subsequently...
    5. Rey being the result of that, unbeknownst to Luke.
    6. Another character that knew all of the main PT and OT characters.
To me, it just seems that where TLJ concluded, that was it...there was nothing else, and with Carrie's untimely passing...it was over for me...the story was done.

Give me something from the past, something familiar from a time before that will give new hope to the story to push it to a victory...that pep talk from the old coach before the big win.

My biggest sense of disappointment came from what I still felt was a badly warped sense of scale in the film.

IX could win my back by having battles that didn't almost entirely revolve around the main characters, making the factions feel more fluid and the worlds more lived in.

TLJ felt like it had a core cast of characters and a bunch of faceless stormtroopers. It just didn't have the charm that a lot of other Star Wars films have had with auxiliary characters- if someone was doing something important, they were probably part of the "inner circle". That's my take on why Tallie was so popular too, because she almost broke that glass character ceiling.

JJ has to do a lot to get me excited for IX, but Luke Skywalker coming back would go a long way to get me interested again. Even if we hear Mark is coming back for IX, I will still wait for someone to see the actual movie before going to the theatre. I'm not getting burned again!

I’m not excited for Episode IX because the characters that most identify with SW were all written out...I just don’t care enough about characters like Rey, Finn, Rose etc to get excited.

Maybe if they brought Luke back to life (not as a force ghost in a 2 minute cameo) and given a major role. Beyond that I don’t care enough about the disappointing sequel trilogy to care.

literally all he has to do is not have any sort of mention of TLJ and pretend IX is a direct sequel to TLJ because the second movie did not add anything from my perspective.

Personally, even as I accept Luke having become one with the Force, I do deeply wish to see Luke return in a substantial way.

Luke is the only Jedi in any position to teach Rey, to help her avoid his mistakes and the mistakes of the Jedi Order of old.

The ancient Jedi journals are not nearly enough on their own, I think, plausibly, for Rey to teach herself enough to be in any position to teach others, if that indeed is a component of her fate within and/or beyond the sequel trilogy.

I'd like to see him genuinely train Rey.

Another wish: as hinted at with Yoda in TLJ (i.e. lightning), I'd like to see Luke demonstrate the ability to move between the netherworld of the Force and the physical world and interact with/influence things at will.

I had this idea about the Knights of Ren somehow pursuing Rey, and as some of them being Luke's prior students, using various Force powers to give her a real challenge, something she cannot confront entirely on her own.

This could be one perfect opportunity, among others, for Luke to return - not to "save the day," per se, but rather to give Rey a chance to survive while confronting his former students and demonstrating the power of the Light over the Dark Side of the Force.

Ultimately, I'm holding out hope to see some vintage Luke preserved in this trilogy - the heroic Luke we know and love with some Yoda-grade wisdom, of his own kind, added for good measure.

This could also show, I believe, that Luke continued to learn about his relationship with the Force and his responsibility to helping defeat the Dark Side of the Force after the events of TLJ.

The Luke I know cannot possibly "be done" with things at this point, and even Obi-Wan intervened in substantial and informative ways in the Original Trilogy, setting the precedent.

If Luke is not included in this film in more than a token way, I personally believe the sequel trilogy will have missed an opportunity to capitalize maximally on the one "surviving" Original Trilogy character remaining in this trilogy.

I've suggested several times earlier that IX should be a conflict transcending militaristic skirmishes - that it should ascend to the very heart of the Force and what it means to be a Jedi (or not). With that in mind, I believe Luke has much to contribute in terms of understanding and action - such a potential that I would be disappointed they did not at least consider his significance and attempt to tap into that.

May the Force be with JJ, the Lucasfilm Story Group, fans, and the story of Star Wars itself!

i apologize for posting here, as TLJ did not disappoint me per say.. but there were lots of things (big things) that i'd hoped for, and still hope for.
get out of my head bro!.. seriously, that's my list. :p

    1. why the hell not? he disappeared - so what? he had just achieved the greatest show of force ever.. let's not down play what Luke did using the force just because he didn't use his light saber or pull down a Star Destroyer from the sky like many had hoped to see. he projected himself to another part of the galaxy - and not like a force ghost.. nobody except Leia knew that he wasn't there.
I won't put a full stop after Luke Skywalker just yet... not yet.

    2. omg please. My favorite character in all of SW (ok.. after R2) and she's still a cartoon? only my opinion, but i think she would be a monstrous-sized fan favorite if she was brought to live action.
oh and in the trailer for 9 i want to see her.. and i want to hear a voice say.. "hey Snips". i would need tissues (from crying.. really ppl!)

    3. he's out there. him and a certain blue fella still have some chapters to write in this story somewhere.

4 & 5. it's what i wanted. i'm just not sure if that can be brought in this late in the day.

    6. just one? :p

I'm hoping that JJ is gonna knock it out of the park.

    My wishlist:

    Knights of ren

Poe being a good Han Solo substitute and not just a dumb hot head pilot.

Luke returning. "Noone's ever really gone."

Bigger galaxy. TLJ felt a bit small. Canto Bight didn't really do it for me.

    Lightsaber battles, goddammit!

    Space race/battles
Besides for the opening of TLJ, the space scenes was about as exciting to watch as a couple of cruise lines turning.

    Green lightsaber!

It always comes across that I'm complaining on TLJ. I think it's a good movie, but I wanted to love it. I consider it a better movie than Phantom menace, but PM has the pod race and the Maul duel. TLJ has nothing, imho, in comparison.

Lots of prequel references. To unite the trilogies.
Make Ray fail at something. Fail big time. Hopefully die.
Make Kylo evil. Make Hux scary. Kill Rose. Kill Leia as fast as possible - enough humiliating her.
Possibly a cool flashback of prequel era, explaining Snoke.
Just bring back normailty. No more silly jokes, no more hyperspeed kills and unnecessary bad characters. Nothing will bring me back, but if he tried that'd be good.
