Its the odds on favorite to be central character relationship to the ST. Much like Luke and Vader in the OT, or am I jumping the gun.

The biggest problem I have with Rey being Luke's daughter is that it's just too "vanilla". It's so expected and obvious that it wouldn't make much of a reveal. Why couldn't they reveal it then in TFA? They would need extra two seconds of footage for Luke to say "Hello daughter." in the final scene and it would have been probably more impactful than anytime in ep. VIII.
It was completely opposite with Kylo, we knew he was Han and Leia's son the moment they mentioned their lost son, and then Kylo confirms it by calling Vader his grandfather, and if that's not enough Snoke later double confirms it "...your father, Han Solo.". Why would they be so nonschalant about Kylo's parentage, but keep Rey's a secret for "the reveal", It doesn't make sense. What makes Rey being Luke's daughter more special than Kylo being Han and Leia's son?

Also ep. VIII is going to be dark and weird according to Boyega and Kasdan. Rey being Luke's daughter, then finding out who's her mother ... is more like predictable and uninteresting IMO. Now if Rey was a reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker...that's dark and weird right there.

Well the flashback with the two of them in it will do that, I'm excited to see if they are related.

$ is the reason her identity wasn't revealed in 7, and may not be until 9. Didn't Pablo mention the Rey debate continuing until 2019 after Hamill's gaff at Cambridge? I understand the vanilla concern, but SW has always been vanilla from a story arc / rhyme / whatever litary-term-is-in-vogue nowadays perspective. The creative flavors found in the franchise are in the details and emotions elicited from the viewer. IMHO.

it was even less mysterious than that. Snoke just outright says it (that's the first "hint" we get).
it's after that in which Ren talks to his grandpa and Han and Leia discuss their missing son.
and that was the best thing to do, fankly, because revealing it any more dramatically would have been silly.

which is why i still think Rey Skwalker isn't a good dramatic choice. perhaps there could be some insane twist that legitimizes it, but i'd rather they just went in another direction.

to me, the idea of a complex Darkside mother (some unknown Mara Jade character) is already redundant to Ren, and anyway, i admit i have a bias against introducing more characters to flesh out legacy characters' backstories in favor of moving the story forward.
this is Rey, Finn, Poe, and Ren's story now. they need to be the focus.

Exactly. And if you say Luke is her dad you have to explain:

    1. Who his wife was
    2. What happened to his wife
    3. Why he thought Rey was dead/how Rey went missing
    4. What impact this had on Luke - who already has the Jedi massacre baggage to explain

It's too much and it will all detract from the true heroes of this new trilogy. But if you make Rey's parents unknowns who's backgrounds can be summed up in seconds (from the Empire but now dead) and causes terrible conflict for Rey then you're keeping Rey front and centre of the story.

I agree with master_Shaitan. I mean hell....Rey could be one of a set of triplets *shrugs* and got separated by birth or at a young age and was dropped off on Jakku. I might be thinking way out there but its possible that there is another sibling or two out there somewhere...and no one in the galaxy just won't know it because they are hiding in the unknown regions...with their real mother and father...who knows.

Yeah I'm in that camp, also #SnokeIsDarthPlagueisIsFallenAngelConfirmed.

Agree, Rey being Luke's daughter would just bring unnecessary exposition ESPECIALLY if there is also a "Mara Jade". Story needs to move forward and not backwards. All that family shenannigans would derail the story completely.
Also who would want to watch a movie in which Luke's daughter needs to save her mother and cousin from the dark side? It sounds like a bad fanfiction that used OT as a template.

this is why Rey being pressured into trying to save a complete stranger who murdered her only father figure and is the embodiment of all her fear and misery makes for a much better dramatic arc for me personally. she has no reason not to want to kill Kylo Ren. Luke asking her not to do it (as he should) is good grist.

Total agreement. I think you already posted somewhere of Reys parents could mirror Kylos origins in a cool way if it turns out that she is a kid of the "imperial or FO side". Selfish kid from "good " background in comparison to a hero that never wanted to be one with background on "the wrong side".

yeah, that's still my personal pet theory. Ben came from the Light of the New Republic with hero/legend parents whereas Rey was brought up in the ashes of the Empire, born to disgraced/exiled/perhaps executed parents.

i like that TFA deliberately plays with the idea that destiny is not the same as birthright.

Rey chooses her destiny; it's not just something that's going to happen to her because she happens to have the right parentage.
and there's Ren, her binary, who by all means should have the birthright, but is on a path to his own destruction because he's deliberately trying to fulfill a perceived destiny.

I think the other thing people need to consider here is the Unkar Plutt connection.
Rey was left on Jakku aged 5. She was left with Plutt, who just happens to be the big player of Nima Outpost.
She is literally with him when her parents leave. And her parents didn't lose her. They told her that they would come back for her.
This means that the explicitly left her with Plutt.
This for me suggests her parents had some kind of a rapport with Plutt and that they were likely on Jakku for some time. Maybe for all of Rey's life.
I think this ties in with Rey's folks being Imperials that were left on Jakku. Something leads them away from the planet and they have to leave Rey.
The thing with Rey being left is it must've been the only choice for her parents. But you wouldn't just leave a 5 year old with no plan else she will die.
Plutt, although not a nice guy, would offer protection. Her parent's would've known that.

Not related to Rey, at least not directly, but it might be relevant to speculation and it's extremely surprising information:

Pablo told someone on Twitter that the galaxy has had approximately 29 years of peace after ROTJ. That's literally one year before TFA.

Wow. What the hell? Ben killed Luke's students just one year before? Has Luke been in exile for one year only?

To be fair these things were never explained about Luke's mom in the original trilogy.

no, it's because the war has just begun in TFA. losing BB-8 is what kicks it off. technically, there's tension in the galaxy, but relative peace.
the FO is an order-keeping operation that's just starting to overstep, but it hasn't taken any militaristic action against the Republic yet.

we know the fallout with Luke's students happened about 6 years ago. Pablo and Claudia Gray have confirmed this.

Well, this also depends on whether or not they were really Rey's parents. She may have already been an orphan and they found her somewhere else. Rey's five year old memories aren't reliable. I'm still pretty sure Rey is a name she took from the X Wing pilot.
It's scary for people to speculate about the most popular Rey theory in a "IS LUKE REY'S FATHER?" thread? You must sleep with the lights on if you think that's scary. :p

I know Bloodlines takes place 6 years before but I never saw any reference with the book that discussed Luke's academy. Did I miss something? Also I missed where Pablo referenced 6 years. I know he stated that it happened more recently then 14-15 years but don't remember him saying anything more definitive than that.

sorry if i can't find the tweets or whatever they were ~ i'd look at the WIP Timeline thread?
the 6 years may be a bit fuzzy.
but i believe Gray said specifically that things haven't gone to complete hell in a handbasket yet in Bloodline.
so the assumption is that even if Ben has ditched Luke, he hasn't gone full-blown Kylo Ren yet.
and Hidalgo indicated that Luke has only been missing within that same time period (the roughly 6 years).
the insinuation from Gray is that the end of Bloodline hints at the kick off of the "tragedy" events (presumably the destruction of Luke's school, Ben going Ren, Luke vanishing?).

like i said, i think the Timeline thread might help: https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....ne-of-events-not-final-from-rotj-to-tfa.8331/
look at the last hree or four pages of that thread, i think.
