    This is deep thinking.

As if a story can be good or not for such a detail.

Rey being the granddaughter of Palpy serves no purpose other than to humanize Palpatine, why do such a thing?
It would make the wonderfully evil Emperor sympathetic, boo I say

If Rey's identity will be profoundly satisfying then it could only mean she's Luke's kid.

This issue is absolutely tied to the story to come. Moving forward is more interesting than having this family issue over and over again.

It depends of people, we talked about that a lot but Rey being Luke's kid is throwing the lore under the bus to satisfy an audience.

Not sure this is how you build a good story. It would mean you have not much to tell just copy / paste the OT.

Disney has said that the Star Wars is about the Skywalker Family. If Rey is not a Skywalker, then she is less central of a character of this story and it's main theme's and direction will be more about Luke, Leia and Kylo.

I did not get the feeling that Rey's Role would be a supporting one, rather that her role is central to the Trilogy along with Luke, Leia and Kylo.

Rey is most certainly a member of Anakin Skywalker's family.

What if as a consequence of what happens to both Rey and Luke she is called by him "daughter" and essentially becomes a Skywalker?

So where's the point of secrecy ? And by all means forbid the actors to talk about that ?

I mean, they spoiled it even before the movie was released ?

Because people talk about it more like this.
This thread is 300 pages long.

I'd bet the episode thought to have contained Rey = Kenobi hints was probably one of the most watched Rebels eps.

Little Rey was played by Cailey Fleming from Mississippi. She doesn't have an English R.P. accent, her accent doesn't match Daisy Ridley's.

    Pablo Hidalgo, Lucasfilm Story Group:
“Aren’t 40% of the Rey parentage theories dependent on accents being genetic? :)” (April 2, 2016)
“I don’t think accents are inherited.” (January 18, 2017) “[Then where do accents come from?] The accent faerie?” (January 19, 2017)
“[I’m worried I’m going deaf, young Rey is speaking in a British and not American accent right?] Does she have enough dialog to hear it? The actress is American because the bit was shot very late in the US.” (November 11, 2016) “[She says ‘no, come back, no!’ I’d say maybe enough? What you think?] Not if she’s shrieking it.” (November 11, 2016)
“[Young Rey has no accent, did she learn her accent from Unkar Plutt/Simon Pegg?] That’s remarkably plausible and thought out.” (January 22, 2017)

That they would feign secrecy just to drive interest and hype?

Oh of course there's nothing there. But the mere THOUGHT that something might be drove hype for that episode through the roof.

That's brilliant marketing by the Mouse and LFL

Rey's memory...can't consciously recall from when she was very little
    Rey's first name...not originally Rey
    Rey's last name...not originally blank/nothing
    Rey's accent...not originally space R.P. English

:) Gee I wonder what the story reason could be for such ideas.

    1. Rey not remembering her past has no relation to her being a Skywalker. It's simply an important aspect of her character. If she knows what happened and why then there is no great quest for her.
    2. Having a different original first name means very little.
    3. We don't know she has a last name. But even if she has, the reason for keeping it secret could be because they want to tease the Skywalker or Solo connection. Or she is a Palpatine or Kenobi (please no). Or perhaps she has the same past as Finn, who of course has no name and likely never will. She might've been taken by Luke at a young age as Finn was by the First order - a great cause of conflict for her.
    4. Are you sure Pablo is saying that? To me it reads that the young actress was brought in late and her accent cannot be distinguished between American or English. The last bit reads like sarcasm to me.

What's funny really is that, although I created this thread on the premise of there being evidence, my own views are based largely on the "feeling" I get from TFA.
It strikes me that it is all about the legends passing the baton to the new band of heroes.
The Skywalker story is continued through Kylo Ren. Essentially it is still all about Vader. All of the action is down to what Kylo Ren did to Luke. In the crawl it says how the First Order has risen since Skywalker vanished - that is down to Ren. Had Luke been around, it is implied that this wouldn't have happened.

But the new band of heroes are new in my opinion. Rey, Finn and Poe.
Sure, JJ has thrown in a few things that make us wonder - is Rey and Skywalker? A Solo? A Kenobi? But regardless of how she was presented, people would think that anyway. It is Star Wars. And the parental revelation is all but expected. But would they be slaves to that? I don't think so. I think they have created a new thread in this saga.

Before the films something that intrigued me was JJ's comment about what made him take on the job: "Who is Luke Skywalker?". And he later explained that in an interview by saying that is was about "Who is Luke Skywalker to the new generation of people in the galaxy?".
Who is he to the lowly scavenger on Jakku? Who is he to the conflicted Stormtrooper? Who is he to the hero Rebel pilot? Who he is to his old friends? His family?
For the new heroes, it is about learning from these old heroes. Learning how to fight the Dark Side.

I'm sorry but there is no way Han ever knows who Rey is. If he thought she was Luke's he'd have known that before setting off to Maz's place. Yet when heading there he has no intention to take Rey and Finn on to find Leia. Ergo he has no intention of taking Rey to her auntie (or mother!) and saying "look who I found". Han for me comes across as the beat up old war hero that he is. A man who views himself as a failed father and finds his chance at redemption. And during the film he is passing on the torch to Rey and Finn - whether it be giving advice to Finn about women or training Rey how to use a blaster - it's simply about passing on the torch. Han realises early on that something is at work here. We know he now believes in the Force and when Finn mentions Luke and their mission he sees that these people are the young ones now - but they need help.

Then later with Leia as she hugs Rey - that has no familial significance. It would be weird if it did as too much would be left unsaid. That is about sharing the same grief but also a metaphor for one heroine passing the torch to the next.

And finally we see meet Luke. And Rey presents him with his saber. This for me isn't a daughter seeing her father for the first time. It's about the new hero finding the legend and asking for his help. That's what I saw anyway. All this stuff about Rey's parents is a red herring. We've been made to think she is of significant origins when in fact she isn't. The significance of her origins isn't about who her parents are but what happened to them - and her journey and conflict in discovering the truth.

    In my opinion.

I think the story has a coherent logic which only operates on information provided by the other 6 movies. An audience should be able to identify Rey's parentage by means of reference to the stuff which happens in the enclosed space of the movies. Otherwise, nothing would make sense. Not only did Episode VII provide enough information to determine who Rey's parents are, when it is combined with the attributes of the main characters of the previous movies (Anakin, Luke) it becomes even more clear for the audience. If you use the Skywalker attributes for a new character and then decide that character is not a Skywalker after all it would indeed all be a red herring. It would also nullify everything we were intended to know about Skywalkers in the previous movies.

She's as much a Solo as she is a Skywalker in regard to character traits.
And I don't see how TFA alone points to Luke being her father. That dialogue with Maz is the only indication of what happens to her parents and that suggests they are dead, gone forever, never coming back and Luke is then referred to in separate terms (Rey is waiting for her family > Maz confirms they're never coming back > Maz then says BUT Luke still can).

i just asked someone in the office to slap me for saying this.. but i don't disagree with you my friend.

going into TFA and the talk of 'a new trio' and snippets of 'passing the baton' here and there.. i certainly expected things to go that way.
For the first 40+ minutes of the first viewing, i maintained that thought and believed that Rey was a (fantastic) brand new unrelated character.

it wasn't until she found the light saber that i changed my mind. I know that we all differ with these scenes - and for that we can certainly thank JJ, as that's his bag.. it's what he does.

Where i am currently is that Rey's real name is a secret for a reason. Whether she is a Skywalker/Kenobi/Palpatine/Smithers.. whatever, it seems to me that between the film and things said before and after TFA.. who she is, is important.

Daisy recently said that she thought it was 'obvious' who Rey was from the film. I'm not against the idea of her being a brand new character, but that's just not something she would say if who Rey's parents are isn't a big deal. She of course knows the truth... so she is seeing TFA vastly differently from us minions, but even so i'm not getting how she could be unrelated to an existing family.

I agree wholeheartedly that her character is strong enough to be unrelated to anyone we know, and i 100% believe that the story would still be awesome if they veered away from the story of Anakin.

I just don't think that's happening in this trilogy. I think Disney are dipping their feet in slowly with Star Wars, and they will stick to the Skywalker family soap opera until episode 9 is done.
