    A few q's:

Do you think Maz knows Rey is waiting for to her family?

How would you tell a young person that their parents aren't coming home because they're dead? (Maz even refers to her as 'child').

Why does Maz say "never coming back"? If she suspects Luke is the father why would she think "he is never coming back"? - she doesn't know what he is up to.

If the saber calling to her absolutely meant she was a Skywalker, why does Maz go along with Rey's thoughts and not just tell her that she thinks they could be alive? Surely you can see how a person would perceive "never coming back" as dead? That's what I instantly thought when I heard it.

That's what I find more likely.
But my real point is I think the scene (and the cut) is made not to give definite answers but to open several plausible scenarios.

I never said it wasn't plausible or a good idea just that it would require a lot of explanation and it would. It would also be a change from what we've seen before as it would paint Luke as somewhat omnipotent as, up until now, the Jedi haven't been portrayed like that.

I'd agree that it's not misleading if the only thing we weren't shown was Han's conversation with Maz. But you also have to include that Han decides never to mention it to Rey, that he makes no effort to get her to anyone that confirm his beliefs (he just found Luke's long lost daughter, and his reaction is to do absolutely nothing about it). In fact we see nothing in his behavior to indicate that he believes Rey is related to him (not even the momentary pause we get out of him just hearing Luke's name). Han would need to be so indifferent to finding his missing niece that he would be willing to dump her off with Maz rather than helping her.

Han then would either have to not tell Leia about Rey (which is silly, since if he recognized her, Leia would also recognize her), or tell Leia in a conversation left off screen - which would mean he decided to first not tell Leia when she arrived at Maz's castle, then tell her off camera, then not bring it up again. This despite the fact that we (as an audience) are allowed to hear their private conversations.

Leia then shows absolutely no emotion over this revelation, and also declines to tell Rey who she is.

It requires a conspiracy between Han, Leia, Chewy and Maz to purposely hide Rey's identity from her, going so far as to disguise their thoughts and feelings, not just from Rey, but from each other is scenes where Rey is not present. It would mean that at least two of them were behaving illogically without any reason except to preserve a reveal for the audience. And that would be bad writing.

I thought I read somewhere that the Kyber Crystals are like a 'living crystal'.
If the force flows through them like everything else.... Maybe Luke can use them like a wi-fi network :)

Nah, not for me - it isn't Luke (interesting concept though). It's just the Force doing what the Force does:
"Through the Force things you will see, other places - the future, the past, old friends long gone".
It's trying to get her to find Luke who is in exile. If Luke wanted to be found he'd likely just come out of exile and go to Leia.
But now the Force has been awakened and it is using Rey to get to Luke to persuade him to come back and teach her.

No, Rey only told BB8 that so neither Finn nor Han knew why she wanted to go back just that she wanted to.

Say it straight out rather than make an ambiguous statement like 'They are never coming back'. Maz's statement is something you would say to a young child that doesn't really understand the concept of death. Rey is an adult so doesn't need someone to dance around the truth.

She doesn't think Luke is never coming back. The whole purpose of the scene is to convince Rey to go bring him back. She is simply trying to get Rey to accept that she is wasting her time waiting for something that's never going to happen.

I would think this thread and the many people, including me, that have argued a different interpretation would make it clear to you that not everybody saw it the same way you did.

New when it comes to the story, yes, but this would be new when it comes to the lore and the Jedi and the universe not unlike introducing reincarnation into the GFFA would be. Jedi are not gods. They are servants of the 'god' of the GFFA; the Force.

Do you think Maz could see that it is likely her family, though?

Perhaps. But Maz does call her "child"....
And she says that line softly.

Right, but Rey is thinking about her family (Maz is wise and can see things - so why be so absolute about it?).

I know you do, but can you at least see the possibility that it means "they're dead"?

Did she learn all of her piloting skills on Jakku? Are those skills genetic? Remember Anakin and Luke were natural pilots. I don't think these similarities are there just because they wanted to throw us off the "Rey isn't a Skywalker" scent. Desert planets. Orphans. Slaves. Also she's a mechanic.

C'mon. Why go to all the trouble of implying she's a descendant of Skywalker... to be just NAHHHH, she's just a former padawan or a nobody.

I think Han, Maz and Leia all think they might know something, but they may not be sure. Maybe there were rumors Luke had a child. Maybe Luke and Leia never met her, but they sensed she existed. Maybe Luke hid her knowing what happened with Ben Solo.

So many more scenarios are possible... but they least likely to me is that Rey is a NEW line of Jedi.

I can almost see Luke telling Rey... "The force is strong in my family, my father had it, my sister has it... my daugh..." "Wait! Are you saying I'M YOUR DAUGHTER?" "Yes, Rey, and I think you've known all along".

    But maybe not.

Keep in mind that I'm in agreement with you regarding what Han Knew. However, regarding Leia and Rey, you've made a couple of assumptions that can't be known for certain:

    1) Leia didn't tell her.

It's entirely possible that Leia did tell her after she arrived on base and before she left to go to Ach-To. We don't know how much time passed before Rey left and Rey and Leia seemed pretty close and familiar when they were saying goodbye.

    2) Rey needed to be told.

We are never told explicitly that Rey doesn't know who she is or that she hadn't learned it on her own by the end of movie such as repressed memories resurfacing after the light saber incident or once she embrace her force abilities and taps into the Force to use them or even when she was sharing minds with Kylo. There is also the shield on her mind that Ren couldn't break through but his attempt may have allowed Rey to access what was behind it herself. That's why I've never accepted the 'why didn't they tell her' argument for what a character may or may not know about Rey as valid.

You aren't born a natural pilot. You are born with fast reflexes and the ability to "see things before they happen". These skills are true of all Jedi. But she learned how to be a pilot. She wasn't born with that knowledge.

To both surprise people and inspire them.

That would be horrendous. Leia told Rey the truth about her parents off screen? I'd walk from the cinema during TLJ if this is revealed.

Snoke: The droid will soon be delivered to the Resistance, leading them to the last Jedi. If Skywalker returns, the new Jedi will rise.

    the last jedi: Luke
the new jedi: Rey (or Rey and Finn)

@pablohidalgo was Rey's parentage supposed to be this huge deal or is it being blown out of proportion?

    Pablo Hidalgo ‏@pablohidalgo
@mellyblues I can't answer that without half of tumblr pulling their hair out.

    About this trilogy:
You've also tried to remind fans to keep this all in perspective.

    MH
: You know, I said to people, "No matter what we come up with, folks, we can't make everybody thrilled and delighted with our eventual decisions." And the headline ran online: "Star Wars VII bound to disappoint, says Mark Hamill." [Laughs] That got me a phone call from the powers that be. I'll tell you another thing you should never say in front of a crowd of Star Wars fans – which I heard from George first on the set. The phrase that I used in front of like 5000 fans pumped to the gills, ready to see the trailer was, "It's only a movie."

So it was your version of that William Shatner SNL sketch?
    MH:

Oh, "Get a life!" [Laughs] No, I mean, it's different in the sense that he was attacking the actual character of the person who is a fan. I'm trying to appeal to the rational, sane people that know that movies don't really change your life. If you really think that we can make you feel like you were 10 years old at 38, you know what's gonna happen! So just don't think that and you'll be fine. [X] December 18, 2015

    (ewok)

"Despite fans’ obsession with Skywalker, Hamill said his character is no longer the central focus of the franchise.

“It’s not about me anymore,” he said. “It’s not my story. It’s Rey and Finn and Poe which is the way it should be.” [X]

    (ewok)
According to Ridley, rumors of Jyn and Rey's familial connection have been greatly exaggerated. "I'm not being funny you guys, but just because she's white and got brown hair... it doesn't mean she's my mom," Ridley told MTV's Josh Horowitz backstage at the MTV Movie Awards.

And besides, Ridley already knows who Rey's parents are -- and she doesn't think it's that big of a deal. "I think the amazing thing about [Episode VII] is that Finn and Rey don't come from anywhere, and they find a place," Ridley, who's currently filming Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII, said. "So to me, it's funny that people think it's so important because I don't really think it is."

@mwmartin04 It [the story] was always about a young woman seeking to become a Jedi.
    (ewok)

"When Lucasfilm set out to create the Star Wars sequel trilogy, which would be released under the banner of The Walt Disney Company after its acquisition of Lucasfilm, it became clear to them that Star Wars could not just rely on the heroes of the original trilogy and would need to create a new generation of characters to take up the mantle. One such character was Rey, who, in the development process for Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, was known as Kira.[11] She was conceived as the protagonist from the project's beginning, with the original screenwriter, Michael Arndt, agreeing to write the film when he was told it would be the origin story of a female Jedi.[12] He described Kira as a "loner hothead, gear-head, badass."[11]J.J. Abrams, who was chosen as the film's director, quickly gravitated towards the idea of a female lead, and to the notion that the character, living thirty years after Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, would not know who Luke Skywalker was or even regard him as a myth.[13] Abrams was also drawn to the idea of a female Jedi being at the center of the Star Wars story.[14]

Luke Skywalker himself posed a challenge to the character who became Rey while Arndt was working on the early iterations of the film. In early drafts of the story, Arndt wrote that Rey's home was destroyed and she goes off a journey where she meets Luke and then defeats the villain. Arndt felt like Luke's presence upstaged Rey, thinking that every time Luke entered a scene he overshadowed her character because the audience would want to know more about him. Ultimately, the writers chose to make Luke the MacGuffin of the film, with Rey's journey culminating in discovering Luke in exile"

    (ewok)

I find this theory about why Anakin's lightsaber called to Rey [remember that it never called to Luke or Leia]:

"Ahsoka's book can explain why Anakin's lightsaber called Rey this book makes me wonder if, once the originally-intended person dies, the crystals can later call to someone else. That might be what's happened to Rey with Anakin's lightsaber crystal, and why it calls to her. It chose her. the Crystals chose Rey not because she is a possible Skywalker, but because the Crystals themselves needed to be restored. The Bespin Blade was a part of some traumatic stuff, the killing of the younglings, then Luke losing his hand. The Crystals needed a new owner. "
    (ewok)

"Rey thinking Luke is a myth is a proof she is his kid"

Bloodline: "He [Luke] was a figure of myth more than one of flesh and blood." Luke is said to be on a “strange quest for the lore of the Jedi” and has been out of the public eye for so long, he’s slowly but surely fading into myth.

"Rey living in a desert planet is a proof she is a Skywalker"
"Originally, the idea of a planet full of space debris included a lot more stuff from the Original Trilogy. And instead of the desert world of Jakku, it was a swampy place, with an ocean." [x]

    Pablo Hidalgo ‏@pablohidalgo
@SeithTristan It [Jakku] wasn't always a desert planet in development. But it was always a junkyard

Really the lore ? Like not giving a damn about the jedi code ?

Seems like the standards are changing here too depending of what you want.

BTW, if all the things are linked with the Force where is the problem with acting as a remote because the Force is everywhere ?

Sounds like you select the lore you want there.

Maz seemed to be very intuitive so it's certainly possible but, if she did, why didn't she specifically say so?

Maz also knows she's speaking to an adult woman so there is no need to treat her like a child. She would be comforting and gentle but not beat around the bush by saying something vague.

Because Rey, for her own sake if not for the galaxy's needed to let go of her childish fantasies and accept that she would never be reunited with her family by going back to Jakku.

Certainly. I don't think I've ever suggested otherwise. We don't know who Rey is yet so virtually anything is still possible. Otherwise, this thread wouldn't exist.

But she would've known the strong possibility, right? So she knows Rey is likely thinking of her family but then states that "they're never coming back". Again, if she knows Luke is dad, why say that? Ergo, she doesn't know Luke is daddy thus the saber calling to Rey doesn't = Skywalker bloodline! ;)

Rey may be an adult but she is also very childlike. Again, Maz is wise. She knows stuff. She can see what is in Rey. She speaks to her softly and perhaps to the child that lost her parents....

I agree she needed to let go - but at the same time if it comes out that Luke is daddy and Maz knew then that would be a d**k move by Maz.[/QUOTE]

I love Pablo, but if the big secret is Rey is _______ daughter, he's going to point to all the reasons why she probably isn't. OR he's preparing the fanbase for her not to be. Or, he doesn't know. ;)

I think this is Rey's story. Even now. With a few things adjusted.

    Her parents are dead.
    Luke is her mentor.
