damn, bullet proof argument here guys: he's actually watched Star Wars!

close the thread! @Valim has got this on lock down!

@master_shaitan that's an excellent quote from JJ, but it's wasted on these guys. only quotes that support ReySky are to be considered. the rest is crap because they've actually watched Star Wars.

Anyway, there you have it. Pablo Hidalgo explaining what "about the Skywalker family" means.
Essentially, the story is "about" them. Not everyone has to be a Skywalker.

I've posted over 1,000 times and mostly in this thread. A large portion of my posts have been this counter argument. You don't care to acknowledge it or whatever the case may be and it's been beaten to death by myself and many others. I was was even pro Rey Skywalker at one point so you'll have a difficult time convincing anyone I'm close minded. I've said agree to disagree. I won't be responding further to you on the protagonist = Skywalker topic.

Despite how heated it can be, we can all agree Rey definitely has A father, right?

It doesn't matter what the internet thinks. It only matters what GL and LucasFilm's official stance is and they say it's all about Anakin. Also TPM is part 1 of a trilogy not a stand alone story and there is no question that Anakin is the main protagonist of the whole trilogy. Further more, as I have previously stated, it's been 100% confirmed that Rey is the main protagonist of the entire trilogy and not just TFA so, no, they won't be switching to someone else as the main protagonist in the next two films.

He also acknowledges in that quote that he's not saying that blood connections aren't canon nor is he suggesting a departure from conventional canon practices and he's not the one calling the shots nor was he part of the list in my post.

you pretty much just confirmed that Anakin isn't the protag of TPM. if this is true, then the idea of a Skywalker being the protag in every saga film can't be true. surely you see this.

i'm not trying to debate whether or not Rey is the protag moving forward; i haven't seen you provide any actual quotes or tweets to support this idea, but either way, i'm not debating that.

as for Pablo's tweets, and how he's not calling the shots, the same could be said for KK. she's not writing the story, nor is she in charge of story creation: she's a producer, so her job is keeping tabs on artists so they keep working on schedule while ensuring that the whole team sticks to their mission statement of making good Star Wars movies. she's not the creative head of LucasFilms, or even on the writing team, so using her quotes over Pablo's is sort of silly.

Well, of course they're canon! But he's saying that he wanted the film to be about how the Force is accessible to everyone, irrespective of their gene pool. Kylo is a Skywalker. Finn isn't a Force user. Nor is Poe. Luke is. Leia is. And if Rey is as well then this powerful notion, that clearly is important to him, is lost.

And what about the Pablo tweets? He clearly expresses how Kylo can be the only new Skywalker and for the trilogy to still be about the Skywalker family.

You demanded quotes from officials who said the protagonist didn't have to be a Skywalker. I did that and surprise surprise you're rejecting his credibility.

And regardless of who Rey is, it is still ABOUT the Skywalker's, as Pablo points out:

oh hell yeah dude, i'm gonna milk the quote thing if i can. i think they're bogus as they generally have more to do with marketing than content creation, but whatever. lots of people around here seem to have a thing for the quotes, so i'll use it.

EDIT: also, demanded? strong words... care to quote me on it? :p

Woa, I never said you were closed minded just that your post was suggesting I was. I know how much you have posted and am not arguing that with you. I'm saying you say there is a problem in my line of thinking but never say what that problem is. I am not, for one second, suggesting you haven't added substantive arguments and posts to this thread. I do think you've been a bit repetitive on this topic though and I've done my best to respond to every argument that's been raised and you can confirm with @master_shaitan that I'm not above admitting when I'm wrong or have misunderstood something.:)
    --- Double Post Merged, Mar 27, 2017, Original Post Date: Mar 27, 2017 ---
I never said saga film. I said saga story. Each film trilogy is one complete story told over the course of three films. That was JJ I said wasn't calling the shots not Pablo and KK is most certainly calling the shots and she was in every story meeting according to the behind the scenes documentary and she is in charge of everything including story creation. As for Rey being the main protagonist, @MagnarTheGreat posted quotes confirming that many pages back. Perhaps he can re-post them for those that missed them the first time.
    --- Double Post Merged, Mar 27, 2017 ---
Not really a detailed definition is it? It certainly doesn't say whether a Skywalker family story can be so without a Skywalker by blood as the main protagonist plus he's answering a specific question and not really addressing the issue we're discussing here.

you keep mentioning the quotes that assert Rey is definitively the protag, so if they pop up i'd be happy to read them!

as for KK's role in the films moving forward, she's a producer. producers may toss an idea in the hat during a round table or something, but other than that producers generally do not delve into the creative side of things. that's for the writers and artists to do, which the producer then manages. KK is in every meeting because, as a producer, she needs to keep close attention to where everyone is at so as to orchestrate the many moving pieces in film making. things like mood, story, and style are for the director to work on, not the producer.

Again, JJ isn't calling the shots so what he might like to do is irrelevant. The question is if KK, LucasFilm and Disney would have allowed him to stray from the already well established pattern that has already proven to be extremely profitable. I don't think so. I think if they were going to try a deviation like that, they would have done it on a much smaller scale like a book as a trial run rather than banking everything on it like would be the case if they did it with the ST.

She's far more than merely a producer. She's the new GL and like him is completely hands on with every facet of the story. She's the reason there are so many new female leads in the new canon. She created the Story group and gave them their marching orders. She is who is making all of the most important decisions about the franchise including who Rey is which arguably the most important decision in the franchise at the moment.

c'mon man, she's not the new GL. the story group is the same as it was when under GL, so she didn't create a new group nor did she issue "marching orders." one of the whole controversies around Disney taking over was whether or not they'd stick with the same content and story creators as with GL, so i don't know where you got these ideas from.

i will say you're right in that she's more than just a producer at this point, but it doesn't change the fact that she's on the production side of these films, not the creative side. she's in charge of keeping tabs on the artists, making sure they stay in budget, making sure their marketing is working, etc. producers do a lot and have access to a lot of the process, but they are definitely not in charge of content creation.

The story group didn't exist under GL and KK is his chosen successor. The was part of his agreement with Disney that she be his replacement and have the same power over LucasFilm that he did. Disney agreed so KK is, in fact, the new GL. Also, she did create the story group and give them their marching orders. It was entirely her idea to have a story group to maintain continuity and they do work for and answer to her. The behind the scenes documentary describes her involvement in story meetings as far more involved than merely throwing out an idea here and there. She called the meetings, ran them and gave thumbs up or down on ideas presented to her much like GL did before her.

Not sure that follows. Even in our world you can have a surrogate mother with no genetic relationship to the baby they carry. If the Force can be one parent it could also be both parents.

Wacko theory alert! I started thinking about Shmi and have now decided that she is the chosen one. She is the only person the Force actually "chose". Anakin wasn't "chosen" - the Force created him. Shmi's the selfless Jesus figure not Anakin. The good in Anakin that Luke awoke in RotJ was the good that Shmi put there in his childhood. No wonder Anakin went mad when she died: he had just failed to protect the Chosen One. No wonder he ended up hating the Jedi: they took him away from the Chosen One. No wonder Amidala was a bit of a disappointment as a wife: his mother was the Chosen One. It explains everything! Or possibly not...

well, clearly one of us is getting our facts mixed up!

from what i remember there was a kerfuffle about Disney destroying Star Wars when it was sold. to ease fears people like Pablo, Filoni, and others were kept on the team so they could continue growing the universe under the lines given to them via GL. so that right there refutes your idea that a whole new group was brought in...
