Don't worry master_Shaitan, reading these past few pages, you are making complete sense compared to others.

I rewatched TFA a week ago, trying to put my self in a Rey Skywalker and Rey Solo frame of view. Both theories fell apart so quickly, Maz was the straw that broke the camels back.

Thanks bud! Yeah I went into TFA thinking she could be a Solo but that Maz scene along with the Han and Leia stuff ruled it out for me.

Rey is a random person with super Jedi powers that is set up to be Kylo's love interest; (cross that), I mean antagonist. All I know that the TFA sets this trilogy up with no Skywalkers as main protagonists (Rey, FInn and Poe are not Skywalkers). This sequel is not a Skywalker protagonist driven story. The Skywalkers are in the story and are the "McGuffins" to our protagonist's narrative.

I disagree, though I've been on the fence for the last six months or so about the possibility.

My initial reaction to the trailer was that, yep, Rey isn't a Skywalker, and woah we're getting ReyLo. Subsequent viewings actually reveals we learned very little from this trailer an that it was very well done, with potential misdirects throughout the entirety of the trailer.

Ever considered the possibility that he has no idea that he's even got a child?

That would take a typically mundane reveal and crank it up a few notches, at least for me: have Snoke torture Rey and reveal - "Oh...my child, you don't know, do you? Neither does he..." - to her that Luke is her father.

Would certainly put an unexpected twist on all of this.

The only thing we know after that trailer is that issue doesn't seem to be a big deal to the story.

How would they actually go about teasing Rey's lineage in a trailer any better than they did in TFA, even if they wanted to?

Have Luke only say the first half of a sentence? "Rey...your parents..."?

You have a glimpse of the story and it is about the future not the past. Most of people wanted the void between ROTJ and TFA to be filled and I don't think it is going that way.

Oh, of course it's not going to be filled out with one film, even if they tried.

What I'm saying is that simply because it isn't mentioned in a trailer, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't be a core plot point, and we have already been informed that we will learn more about Rey's lineage in this film.

If her reaction is "Meh", sure, it's a moot point; but, considering that she's been waiting on Jakku for likely over a decade, it seems pretty likely that the reveal - whomever they are - will get a strong reaction from Rey and could further the story.

I had planned on jumping The Cantina ship until the film's release, but have resorted to actively avoiding spoiler threads: so soon after a trailer, there's still a LOT that I want to talk about; I thought about making an entirely new thread for my theory, which is admittedly more of just an idea, but I figured that it's best to keep the "Rey is Luke's daughter" talk to this great thread.

I'm fairly confident that Rey is Luke's daughter, even if it's just based on feeling, but I want to propose some things that I don't think we've really talked about in this thread (if we have, then I must apologise for the following text).

    • "That lightsaber was Luke's. And his
father's before him and now, it calls to you!
    "

This is something I think has been mentioned before, but I'd like to go over it again. This is a line that I think we've discussed ad nauseam, but I want to revisit again with the perspective of an early TFA draft that we've heard bits and pieces about in mind, where the Skywalker legacy lightsaber was the macguffin of this film, as opposed to the map piece to find Luke, which implies that, at some point, the lightsaber was going to be much more important to the film than it eventually ended up being.

Many will recall that Kylo tells Finn that the lightsaber belongs to him on Starkiller Base, which is an extremely odd statement considering that Kylo doesn't seemingly have any prior connection to the lightsaber, other than the fact that it was owned by his grandfather and uncle, and that he thinks he is something of an heir to it (in a similar fashion as to how he thinks he is the rightful heir to the galaxy, considering his heritage).

Yet, as we know, the lightsaber calls specifically to Rey, and is pulled towards her, not Kylo - if there's anything to insinuate from this, it's that Rey could also be an heir to the lightsaber.

Also, as Rey accepts her destiny in accepting the call of the lightsaber, in the film - not the soundtrack - we hear a very familiar musical theme play from Burning Homestead: the very same theme that played in A New Hope when Luke Skywalker witnessed his uncle and aunt burnt down in a hellish scene, and accepted that his destiny was away from Tatooine. Which builds into my next point...

    • Kylo and Rey represent Anakin and Luke respectively

I'm going to keep this pretty short and to the point: Kylo has followed a path similar to his grandfather, in that, from what we know of Ben Solo, at least, he would utilise his Force abilities from a young age, and has seemingly fallen from the light to the dark, which is an internal conflict that he still struggles with (and as we've learned from supplementary material, this is something that Anakin would sometimes struggle with as Vader, too); on the other hand, Rey is a nobody who was left by a stranger on a desert planet, who has a knack for fixing and flying things (something very clearly shared with Kylo, if the latest TLJ trailer is anything to go by) and is filled with hope (for her parents/abandoners to return) who's presence in the Force is only awoken after we meet her.

    Now, my theory:
Rey is a Skywalker, and specifically Luke's daughter, but neither her nor Luke knows this. It's an idea every fan is familiar with, but will be presented to us in an out-of-left-field way, which seriously shakes things up.

I know what you're thinking: Luke would know that's his daughter straight away, right? Even if he didn't recognise her visually, he would sense her presence in the Force! Except...we know that the Force didn't awaken in Rey until TFA, so, at least in my understanding of the Force, Rey's presence in the Force at the end of TFA would be completely different to her presence in it at a younger age, hence why Luke wouldn't recognise her in the Force - so, even if he did visually, he'd have little reason to believe it was his daughter after all of these years by doing a standard check with his knowledge of the Force.

Snoke - perhaps himself, or through someone else - is the one ultimately responsible for Rey being dropped off on Jakku. Remember: at this time, nobody would have had any idea that Rey would become immensely powerful in the Force, especially seeing as her cousin, Ben, had likely been showing evidence of his powers since a young age.

The real reason for Rey being taken away from Luke is that Snoke is after Ben, who he views as an ideal apprentice - a balance of light and dark - but is still under Luke's guidance. By taking away Luke's daughter (and possibly even his wife/partner, too; if she wasn't murdered originally, I see her escaping from Snoke to hide Rey on Jakku before being killed), Snoke will fragment Luke's relationship with Ben - remember how Luke reacted in ROTJ when Vader sensed that he had a sister? - and his other pupils, and given that Leia sent Ben away with Luke and that Han and Ben presumably didn't get on that well, meaning he feels isolated as it is, Luke pushing him further away in his own grievances could ultimately be the thing that pushed Ben over to becoming Kylo. He turns to someone he trusts: someone who's been watching over and calling for him since a young age, Snoke.

I think that, ultimately, Luke believes Rey to be dead or long lost, and attempted to track her down for years. Perhaps he believed that going to the First Jedi Temple, of all places, would amplify his Force abilities to aid in his search for his missing daughter, but, ultimately, he was unable to find her, and this could go one of two ways: Luke's fragmented relationship with Ben results in the latter joining Snoke, becoming Kylo and destroying the Academy, or...perhaps Luke destroyed the Academy after losing his nephew.

With nowhere in the galaxy left to go, ashamed and left in ruin, Luke continued his search for the first Jedi Temple, abandoning his past - and, having only had sporadic-at-best interactions with Han and Leia over his journeys, alluded to in Bloodline, never explains any of it to them, from his having a child to the real reason for Ben's fall - to die lonely and meditate on Ahch-To, a broken last Jedi.

I think an interesting way to reveal this would be to actually have Snoke realise who Rey is whilst he seemingly tortures her, which is hen shared with Rey and the audience, hence Mark's constant jokes about the matter: the truth is, he might have no idea who Rey's parents are, in a similar way to how Prowse (Vader's physical actor) had zero idea, along with pretty much everyone else, that Luke was Vader's son; the scene that reveals this doesn't include him, and barely includes anyone else outside of Serkis and Ridley, at least from the perspective shown in the trailer. Inactive Praetorian Guards could be CGI specifically for a secretly shot scene.

Not to mention, Vader literally had Leia bumping into him in ANH - and he still wasn't able to sense that she was her daughter through the Force.

The thing that bugs me is that when Daisy got the question "Who are Rey's parents?" she answered that she thinks the answer to that is "pretty obvious" when you watch TFA.

So if Rey's parentage is supposed to be "pretty obvious" when watching TFA, it should also be one of the simplest explanations. In other words, either a Solo or a Skywalker.

add Kenobi to that... as he speaks to her during the force back.

i don't particularly think she is a Kenobi mind.. but we should have him in the list of possibles if we're going by what we saw/heard in TFA.

i would hope that if Rey's parentage / lineage is not overly important to the saga.. that we will discover who she is in TLJ. If she the daughter of a primary character, then i suspect it will be JJ's bag to reveal it in ep9.

i don't want them to drag it on if it's not a big deal :)

I don't think that this makes Kenobi, or one of his unlikely-to-exist descendants, an obvious option by any means.

We also hear Luke, Vader, Yoda, etc. I don't think that there's much more to it; whilst some might choose to argue that Ewan coming in to do lines makes it more likely, I just think it's worth noting that he's all for coming back, and his inclusion - in voice - in TFA lends a hand to him returning in TLJ as a Force ghost.

Couldn't have said it much better myself :)

he calls by name in the force back.. so its possible that Daisey was referring to that.

i don't think any of the options were obvious including Solo or Skywalker.. if they were we wouldn't be talking bout it on page 544 lol

i just hope we find out who the bloody hell she is in December.. i cant do another 2 years of this! :D
