Hey Klai, how confident are you that Rey is Luke's father? Will you be very upset when they reveal that she's someone else entirely? And are you very upset right now that Rey Skywalker, as a theory, is becoming less and less popular?

And if they do reveal she is after all the child of someone completely unconnected with the OT trio, what will you do? Stop watching the trilogy?

This thread is going to be very interesting to re-visit after the movie's release. I wonder if you'll come back to it happy or very disappointed.

I think everything should be in aid of telling a good story. Not as fan-service. That's just asking for accusations of retreading old ground. But, then again, nothing is concrete until the movie comes out.

Man, @TTT, you've really let the "Reylos" get under your skin, huh? It's just a theory, though. People are allowed to change their mind with time and with new information being released every day.

    These are good points.

Look, I love J.J., and I loved TFA, but...I think he got a bit too rampant with his “mystery box” ethos, where he will put clues out there as to what’s in the box (i.e. who Rey’s parents are), but doesn’t aim to reveal what’s inside the “mystery box”.

I’ve spoken about it before, but the nonchalant manner in which the cast and director have talked about Rey’s parents - and their reveal coming in this film - suggests to me that it’s not supposed to be some twist on the level of “No, I am your father”; it’s like telling someone you’re going to make them jump before you go ahead and hide behind a corner to make them jump: everyone sees it coming.

Now, who this information is delivered by (Snoke? Kylo?) could be a potential twist in itself, but who her parents actually are isn’t supposed to be, in my opinion.

I think I agree with what you’re saying here, and whilst my personal preference is that she’s a Skywalker (if not, then a Random), I’ll absolutely go in with an empty mind and lap up whatever RJ delivers to us.

Be it a Skywalker, Kenobi, Palpatine, Solo, Random, Random-but-not-so-Random...Rey’s arc has to take us there as an audience in a way which suits the story best, and I trust Rian to put the story above all else.

I’m petrified, if I’m honest, to see the reaction by the hardcore SW fan base and the more casual general audience regarding the reveal of Rey’s parents. I think it’s possible that we go through a few looping stories to get there, if I’m honest.

I have watched TFA about four times.
Before TFA = I wasn't concerned who she was ( i would have been ok with Rey Skywalker or Rey Solo).
1st viewing in cinema = I just enjoyed the film, nothing jumped out at me saying that she was the daughter of (insert name here)
2nd viewing in cinema = I entered the cinema, having read up on a few of the major theories, Rey Kenobi was my favourite. While watching I could see the hints and poetry of this theory.
3rd viewing at home = By this time, debates about her parentage had been going back and forth for months. I decided to watch it pretending that Rey was Lukes daughter. It didn't make much sense to me and lacked and true 'poetry' to it. It was then that Rey random became the most feasible theory to me.
4th Viewing at home = Decided to watch again as i was deeply involved in the Rey Solo thread on this forum. I watched TFA pretending that Rey was a Solo. It definitely made no sense and pretty soon I was again seeing the evidence for Rey random and Rey Kenobi topping all other theories.

This last month is going to go super slowly. I can sense it.

I was watching a New hope the other day, and Darth Vader could sense Kenobi when he was on the Death Star. Wouldn't Leia or Kylo Ren have sensed that Rey Skywalker was nearby? presumably Luke will sense that she is his daughter in TLJ.

Well you see, Luke, Leia, Ben and Han they have space amnesia. And Rey has it too. But Chewie is on on the secret cause a Wookie's can't get amnesia. C3P0 is oblivious. R2 doesn't care because he just wants back with Luke.

    Basically.

One of Luke's first lines in TLJ is apparently "Who are you?". It's even in the trailers. Doesn't sound much like what a father would ask his daughter. :p

To be fair, familial ties need not define a story.

Rey being a Skywalker is not mutually exclusive to us getting an original story from RJ :p her actions and the actions of those around her would still define the story.

I've said it before and explained why in details.

Mystery boxes belong in television, NOT in movies.

I know. It's just a really funny way of phrasing it. I want a new story but exactly like the old ones. Besides, we already have the three trilogies connected through blood. Anakin, Luke, Leia and Ben. He IS the Skywalker of the trilogy. The one who wants to finish what his grandfather started.

I don't think Rey is Luke's daughter. Nothing really points to it and it would make a lot of people look really bad and the timeline doesn't fit. But if they do make it canon, I don't have a problem with it. So far as they make it believable and it doesn't disrupt the flow the storytelling.

    Haha yeah, I know :p

I always find the argument that we already have Ben as a Skywalker a bit odd, personally (I mean no disrespect by saying this), seeing as we had both Luke and Leia in the OT. Both revealed to be part of the Skywalker lineage in different films, one in a very nonchalant manner (Leia in ROTJ, just like with Ben in TFA) and one in a much more noticeable way (Luke in TESB).

Also, I don’t think finishing what his grandfather started means what we all think it means.

I always find it a bit odd when people say that the timeline doesn’t fit, given how little we know about Luke in the gap between ROTJ and TFA. Why do you think it doesn’t fit in the timeline?

Also, I think it could come about in an interesting way which could flow well narratively. As I’ve suggested before (Rian could come up with much better way, I’m sure, but these are just a few examples), Snoke could possibly reveal it to Rey when he’s interrogating/torturing her on The Supremacy, or perhaps unlocking the real meaning behind Rey’s Forceback and learning more about it.

For instance, Rey could straight-up ask Luke if he’s her father, and he says no (there could be a million and one reasons as to why this is, so just play along :p). Rey then has a Force vision which reveals slightly more about her Forceback in TFA, and builds on it, showing us more. Later on in the film, Kylo reveals that he knows Rey, and through flashbacks or as a sort of guide in her Force visions we make more sense of her Forceback in TFA (i.e. she could see a cloaked figure walking towards the ship which leaves her in Jakku, thinks it to be Luke, but it’s actually Ben, who hid her for some reason or another), and so on.

There are plenty of ways better to do it than just having Luke say “Yeah, I’m your father” at the start of the film. I’m all for whatever we get, even if my preference is for Rey to be a Skywalker, so long as it’s told well enough! :)

    Exactly!

But it only makes me want Ben to be the only Skywalker heir even more. Because Leia in some ways was cheated out of her legacy. She wasn't given her due as Anakin's daughter. Luke got the cool Jedi tricks but Leia only ever got heartache from it. She only ever loses stuff to her Skywalker heritage- her mother, her adopted family, her planet, her husband and even her son.

That's why I want her son- Ben Solo, to be the fruit of Anakin's legacy. In a way, it distills all the wrong done to Leia by her bloodline into one person and once Ben comes back to her side (which I hope he does), it corrects at least some of it. It will begin to make things right. He'll be her vindication.

I suppose a lot of the same could be said for Luke and Rey. But Luke doesn't have the history with Rey. He didn't see her grow and fall to what seems like a genetic temptation to the dark side- as a result of his blood. And in the same way, Rey doesn't bear the burden of the Skywalker legacy. She was just a scavenger. She didn't have to struggle with who she was and who she came from like Ben did.

Leia deserves to at least be the mother of the Skywalker heir if not the Skywalker heir herself- because let's be real. No one really considers her Leia Skywalker, daughter of Anakin Skywalker. She's Princess Leia Organa and she'll always be Princess Leia.

I don't really like arguing for or against Rey Skywalker because it really doesn't matter to me either way. I just don't want it to become a case of fan service the way @Klai Kenobi wants it to be.

Well, Rey was left on Jakku at the age of 5-7, a period of time in which the Galaxy was ostensibly peaceful. So why would Luke ditch his daughter in some backwater planet with an abusive pot of slime to fend for herself at the threat of starvation and death? Or if she was kidnapped, then why did Luke settle down to start a Jedi academy instead of trying to find his kid? Either way it makes him look like a negligent father- something most people would find hard to stomach.

Unless he didn't know about her at all, in which case you'll need to talk about her mother. You can't just write in a love interest for Luke and not talk about her. What happened to her and why did she stash her kid in Jakku? And why didn't Luke know about her?

It just raises more questions than it answers. Questions that don't seem to lead anywhere in the story besides back to Luke's history. Which is something, I think the filmmakers will want to avoid. Because making it about Luke would essentially take the ST in a direction away from Rey because the GA obviously cares for Luke more rn- nostalgia plays a huge part.

I took that as a "do you know who you are"

    "You've been here before"

He knows who she is. That's the twist.

She isn't a random. If she is, I can't consider it Star Wars. Just Disney 2017 fan fic

See, that's the problem. People discrediting a female character's story just because she isn't the daughter of someone else is exactly why I think it's important that she be established as a nobody. She's powerful not by the virtue of her birth but because of who she is. Basically, I want the same courtesy people extended to Anakin (literally born of immaculate conception) and Luke who was a hero in his own right. I don't want Rey to just become Luke's daughter.

    That's just a personal opinion.

After yet another re watch of TFA I just cannot see how they can make her anyone else but Rey Random, admittedly Rey Kenobi is a slight possibility but in my head the rest of the theories are already debunked.

Skywalker is just too predictable and comes with a hell of a lot of questions.

Solo is borderline ridiculous after the events of TFA, and asks more questions than it answers.

And I just can't see the relevance of palpatine.

So for me, Rey has no familial connection and ultimately I think there is very little reason to do so apart from fan service and a bit of poetry.

As far as where she gets her power/affinity with the force, I think this is the real mystery surrounding her character not who her parents were. Previously I had no idea how to explain this. Now however, I do have a theory.

In the trailer snoke states "the darkness rises.... And the light to meet it" imo this is more than just mindless blustering.

I think this is an observation relating to the way that balance in the force is achieved. I think the force almost balances itself. When one side becomes too strong someone new emerges to balance it again ie palpatine and Anakin.

I think snoke knows this and is using it to his advantage. I think he turned Ben and sent him on the path to the dark side and established the FO in order to draw out a new 'vergeance' in the force. And I think his endgame is to drain her power to enhance his own, making sure he could never be challenged. Or something to that effect lol. That scene in the throne room, I don't think he is torturing her I think he is draining her power or life force.

Its a bit out there but it could work and it makes Rey's story her own. It gives her her own legend and a place in star wars lore that makes here far more significant going forward than just being someone's daughter.

I know this could be achieved in ways other than my theory and I'm all for that. I just don't want to see the main protagonist of the story shackled by the typical star wars family tropes.

If they did happen to make her a Skywalker or Kenobi and the story was well written then I'd be OK with that but I'd always look upon it as a wasted opportunity to tell a new and original story.

I was just thinking that somehow they have also to explain the raw powers, that weird machine, snoke being so... "fragile".
So, why not the tie the answers with balance, somehow?
    It's a chance.
But in all honesty, I'm not 100% sure they need to tie them with balance.
However, it's something to think about it.

One thing you have to say is, if Rey is Luke's daughter it answers a lot of questions in TFA. If you really think about all the "unanswered" questions in TFA all come together nicely if you accept the fact Luke is Rey's father, hid her so that Snoke and the others would not find her and set both friends and vehicles nearby that if she ever awoke, she could be guided to safety and possibly even find Luke (with the map Luke placed nearby with a trusted friend).

I think because the answer fits all too neatly, ties everything in a neat bow, that this is precisely NOT what will be revealed. I think they want both a shock and a continued mystery about Rey, as in we learn some history of her lineage, but it's incomplete and raises even more questions.

We'll see, the good news here is Rey is an outstanding character and Daisy Ridley seems to be making the role both unique and captivating to watch.

You are letting your personal opinion become a political statement. Nobody is discrediting her story just because she's a female character (some might, but they're not as many as people would like to believe). Every child is still born from a FEMALE, so who the heck cares.

The reason people want her to be a Skywalker or Solo or Kenobi or whatever is because they want her to be connected to their favorite characters. To walk around and blindly perceive everyone as a misogynist in disguise is not just wrong - its boring.
