    Hmm, I don't think so.

He is swallowing nervously and his eyes are rapidly flicking from left to right in small hops trying to hold the gaze but he is obviously very tense.

    i agree!

i think he looks nervous, but is doing a good job to hide it.
i think he's not reacting because he has no idea if it'll blow up in his face.
this is part of why he takes such pleasure in railroading Ren later.

The way I understand it, Kylo Ren really doesn't have a rank in the First Order, just he is a leader with no fixed title, maybe just as apprentice to Snoke, who is the leader. It's got to be weird and upsetting for Hux. Just on the basis that this guy has magic powers, he has to deal with his blast. Anything he can get over on Renben has to be satisfying.

i think the visual dictionary says they are co-commanders on the Finalizer, whatever that means.
but you're right, it's not likely a formal rank.
and regardless, i totally agree; they probably think each other is beneath them, Hux because he's not FS, and Ren because he's not military trained.

You're right about Kylo and Hux being equals, I think the segments where they report to Snoke best represent this. How they both need to stand on the same platform and how they both need to look up.

I think that Kylo and the Knights of Ren aren't grouped together among the ranks of the First Order, they are their own organization that have a "partnership" with the First Order.
I had to look closely at that gif to notice the gulping, I haven't seen the eye flicking though.

All I initially saw was restraint on Hux's face. His eyes never left Kylo. It felt as if he had something to say but decided to leave it.

Then when Hux looks down as Kylo passes him, I saw it as Hux planning his next move (to get back at Kylo).

right? great point! my brother was complaining that Hux just barges in on Snoke and Ren when they're talking, but obviously they are part of the same inner circle. and that inner circle doesn't have all the kneeling and bowing and formalities of Sith relationships like with Vader. they call each other by their titles (General, Ren, Supreme Leader) and not Lord, Master, etc.

i think their rivalry (for lack of a better term) couldn't work if they weren't equals in Snoke's eyes. however Ren is special, Hux does run the whole of the military arm of the FO and that's no small job.

I will have to say, that he is so good in that role. I really hope Hux sticks around until IX. Hux is fun to watch. Doesn't mean I like him. I want him crushed at some point.

"General Hux always looks like he's watching someone not use a coaster."

    Hahahahah..... Spot on, spot on.

I can't help thinking that he was miscast. Am I alone on this? I love Dom Gleeson, he's a helluvan actor - but he has this youthful innocence about him. So his attempts at 'evil' and 'menacing' didn't land for me.

i fergit where it was stated, but i believe his youth was a deliberate choice.
they wanted someone who was really too young to have that much power.
in the story, i believe he's only a few years older than Kylo Ren

    :D

What makes it even funnier is Hux’s actual shoulder width. His silhouette is all smoke and mirrors.

Hux is not a physically imposing man standing roughly 6’1’’ and weighing in at barely 170 pounds he is average by any measures.

And he has this heavy shoulder paddin going on and as if this weren't enough he even wears a coat over his shoulder pads. So actually Kylo did not touch him at all, it is like Kylo wanted to remind him that he sees behind and beyond this charade. And judging from Hux's facial expression, Kylo's gesture hit home.

Domhnall Gleeson (Ex Machina), who plays the young military leader, says this commander of the First Order is defined by arrogance and contempt. “There’s an air of superiority, and being better than those people around you,” he says

    http://www.ew.com/article/2015/11/13/star-wars-starkiller-base-general-hux

He does not measure up to the expectations on how a FO should look like, I agree - Domhnall was cast against his type:

"J.J. Abrams came calling with a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. And once again, Gleeson was cast against type, as the evil General Hux"

"I was being sent a lot of scripts for people who are more sensitive than the average person … or appearing to be less masculine, or any of those kinds of things," Gleeson said. "I'm totally comfortable with that. I'm fascinated by that."

    longform-original-23081-1450742166-17.jpg

He was definitely a interesting choice to pick for this role and I think JJ wouldn't have chosen him if he wanted just stereotype FO General. And like I already wrote on my Cantina profile, they invented Brendol Hux with all the cool stuff like Project Harvester, Area Null and command cadets - it would be such a waste to make him Brendol' s son and then degrade him to play some General Tarkin 2.0.

l would be really, really annoyed if his character has no arc, no surprise or revelation.

    Quoting wookiepedia:

"The Arkanis Academy was an Imperial Academy on Arkanis that specialized in training Imperialofficers.Project Harvester, a program into which the Grand Inquisitor draftedForce-sensitivecadets, was connected to the Arkanis Academy"

Area Null was a tower within the Arkanis Academy that was restricted to most Imperial officers and cadets.

It was rumored that the Emperor himself had a throne room there.

Several Imperial operations were based at Area Null including Project Harvester, a secret program for identifying Force-sensitive Imperial Academy recruits

Project Unity was a combination of psychological manipulation and pharmaceutical conditioning designed essentially to brainwash these individuals.

Yeah because (thanks to his ruthless father), he was drilled and trained from birth into this role...

He's very much like Lucius Malfoy seeing Lord Voldemort again in that scene which says a lot (in a good way)

Yeah, there is something else to this character. I want an arc as well. I don't agree he was miscast, I think it's intentional. Before, the officers were basically background characters, or like Tarkin, a main villain. This episode is more like a parallel of "The heroes" and "The villains". There are two stories kind of going at the same time, it isn't one sided really leaning towards just the heroes.

isn't this the truth! Gleason is very slight.
Hux could probably take a laser blast to the shoulder and not feel it as wide as those pads are! hahaha

first time i ever saw Gleason i didn't recognize him or know who he was ~ ha! because he's clearly nothing like the character he plays.
    that's really kind of fun.

and i love that Hux and Ren are basically having what amounts to a pissing contest fueled by their own insecurities.
the sad thing is, it's what makes them so dangerous. Hux is perfectly happy blowing up planets to get Snoke's pat on the head and Ren is over there killing his father.

    idiots.

the whole thing is a sad commentary about what happens when you train up vicious dogs.

i love that too! we never did get much character development in the OT and here it's nice to have a modicum of parity!

Since it seems to be more of a trilogy where there are a lot of morally grey areas (Resolving the grey?) it makes a lot of sense to have more dimensions to what we see as both sides. We really didn't get much of Darth Vader as a character until ESB even, he was just a menacing figure until then. We know right away that this is about the Skywalkers, and we have a divided family and it makes sense that way as well.
