SPECULATION Romance - who falls for who in VIII?

Each Star Wars trilogy has seen a main romance.

In the prequels it was Anakin and Padme, while in the originals it was Han Solo and Leia – but about the sequel trilogy?

The most obvious ones suggested have been Finn and Rey or Finn and Poe, but Star Wars theorist Mike Zeroh has another idea.

In his latest YouTube video, Zeroh notes a passage from the novelisation of The Force Awakens – which is canon – that includes a section revealing Kylo Ren’s love for Rey.

In the Novel of The Force Awakens this what is said.

The extract reads as follows:

SNOKE: You have compassion for her.

KYLO REN: No, never. Compassion for an enemy of the Order?

SNOKE: I perceive the problem. It isn’t her strength that is making you fail, it’s your weakness.

NARRATOR: The rebuke hurt. But Ren didn’t show it.

Zeroh analysed: “Kylo Ren has this compassion for Rey and when Snoke pretty much exposed his feelings to him, I think that Kylo Ren essentially denied those feelings…for a reason.

“[In] The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren is going to obviously meet Rey again on Ahch-To.

“It seems like there maybe some sort of escalation in their feelings.

“[Consider] the way he picked her up on Takodana, like a princess almost, aboard the ship.

“If you guys never noticed that shot, it is very interesting the way he picked her up. It’s almost symbolic.”

He added: “The fact that he had this interest in the girl, ‘the girl I’ve heard so much about.’

“It seems like he knows, or has an idea of who she is maybe by reputation.

“We do know via JJ Abrams [director of Episode VII] these two have never met before The Force Awakens.”

So could Kylo Ren and Rey fall in all love, or is it all a bit farfetched?

The only way this could happen is if the story with Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren had lasted for more than three movies . . . a lot more than three movies. Or it could happen if Rey and Ben Solo had fallen in love before he became evil. Otherwise, I find it not only nauseating, but it also smacks of racial bigotry to me. I get the feeling (and I can never get over it) that many fans would prefer Rey to end up with a badly-written psycho like Kylo Ren than with a black man, even if he is the trilogy's leading man.

Mike Z is a Reylo fan. I was listening to one of his videos and he believes Rey will find out something negative about Luke to make her leave him, and seek out Kylo. How many people have to be thrown under the bus in order for Reylo to happen?

 

Personally, I don't think that the passage from the novelisation of The Force Awakens it's a good argument for Reylo. In the same novelisation we have some dialogue between Poe and Rey and no one is shipping them. I think that there is no romance between Kylo and Rey and no Damerey.

 

I'm inclined to agree, the main reason being that we already expect to learn so much about Rey and Kylo as separate individuals - their pasts, their motivations going forward, their feelings towards Luke, etc. - and whilst there might be some overlap between them, which could be the common ground for a collaboration or one swaying to the other side at some point, having the romantic plot of the film centre around them too would make almost everything but the stories of Kylo and Rey in TLJ unnecessary: we have reason to believe that they're both equally important protagonists in their own stories, and that of the GFFA at large, but to make them romantically interested in one another would take away from everything else I think this film has to offer.

It's like if Luke and Leia weren't going to be brother and sister, and would instead become love interests, so in TESB we see Leia join Luke on Dagobah...as we follow the story of Han and Chewie running away from the Empire "just because".

That can't work if he already has a husband. Unless you're planning to steal him away? That's outrageous!

Seriusly speaking... the necklace + ring it's going to be his mother ring.
And there are only 2 chances.

1- It's just merchandising... too many characters with too many objects (rings, medallions, etc..)
A prop. Nothing more.

2- Or it's something that it's going to be a key in the plot.
It makes no sense to introduce his mother ring in the movie, if somehow that doesn't serve the narrative. You can talk about her - and dive a bit in his backstory - without it. Therefore it may be a Cecov's gun...
He's going to give that nakelace + ring to someone or it's something someone else recognizes.
Or something like that.

Something in the middle ground it's very unlikely.

 

I think that the necklece will mean something, maybe you are right that he's going to give that to someone or he will receive it form someone, who knows. Personally, I don't care, he looks handsome with it and that's want I want XD

 

Those are sound points, but... there's always a but... you have to remember that despite his redemption, Vader remained a monster to every single living character but one... Luke. Leia never forgave him and when she was outed as his daughter, it severely damaged her reputation and ruined her career as a politician. The people who have suffered at Kylo's hands aren't likely to ever forgive him. As you said, and regardless of how regretful and eager to atone for his actions Kylo might be, Reylo literally has the potential to ruin nearly every relationship Rey has. It would almost certainly permanently destroy her relationship with Finn.

 

to me it's sort of irrelevant who forgives Ben outside of his family.
no matter what, if he survives (and i think he will) he's going to have to live a life of atonement--so i don't see that as necessarily a barrier per se.

the thing about Finn is interesting: on the one hand there could be serious jealousy, resentment, lingering horror, etc.
on the other hand, if we find out that Snoke preyed on Ben and gave him the same cup of kool-aid Finn hismelf had to drink, there could be empathy.
as Kylo Ren, he could have killed Finn when they wiped out Lor Tekka on Jakku, but he spared him.
it's not as though Finn ought to be grateful for that, but i think part of the point of that scene is to demonstrate one man waking to the wrongness of his station and declaring himself sovereign and another yearning for that bravery and confidence to do the same. eh. that's what i see anyway.

it's a way long shot, but i also think people underestimate Finn and the heroism he's capable of.
not just as a soldier, but as man with a lion's heart of courage and strength and will ~ and the ability to choose the right thing even in opposition to all else.
to me, he's the Luke of the ST: bold and noble.

all that said, i think the best to be hoped for between Rey and Ben is that they work together to save the galaxy.
what they do beyond that doesn't really seem as important.

 

Poe isn't gay (Poe being Bi is not off the table though)..... between Snap Wexley's little quip in the comic about not leaving Poe alone with a female, Jessika Pava's hugs and whatever his deal was with Suralinda Javos, I definitely think Poe likes the ladies. I'm all for them giving him a gf in TLJ ...especially someone like Connix or Paige Tico.

 

Yeah, I noticed the necklace and what looks like a ring, but it might as well be a pendant. And even if it is in fact a ring, it's impossible to say what it actually means. It could be anything from a wedding ring to the one ring to rule them all.
But I do think Poe is gay. Someone at Lucasfilm said (last year I think) that there's going to be an openly gay character in this trilogy, right? I don't think they were talking about a minor character, so the only option is Poe. Finn showed obvious interest in the opposite sex, so did Rey (when she first meets Finn), and Kylo...well it's beyond obvious there. The only one who was nothing but friendly to everyone was Poe. And I think he'd be a great choice because he wouldn't be a stereotypical gay character. Most gay characters in movies and TV are defined by their orientation, which can be guessed from a mile away, partly because they won't stop talking about it. Meanwhile, real people have many things to deal with outside their orientation. So Poe would be perfect. His defining trait is being the best pilot in the Resistance. He wouldn't be "the gay one" (like many gay characters are in a group), he's just be Poe, like he's always been.
