Rose Tico in Ep 9

That makes sense, although I would have preferred Finn turning into a sexy pirate rather than another resistance hero.... Poe already does that kind of thing very well, we don't need another one. And I would hate Finn becoming as sanctimonious and self-righteous as Rose. I don't know, I like the Finn who runs, who loves Rey, who likes tacky casinos... There is something charming about that Finn.

 

If the filmaker wanted me to acccept her as a "mentor", then he should have given her the appropriate stature, experience, wisdom and status.

I just can't accept an inexperienced lowly mechanic with a fan-girl personna in that role. As a result she just come off as anobnoxious and self-righteous annoyance.
And that's without even considering the "writing fumble" of her last line, which adds dumb and/or hypocritical to the mix.

Spoiler: About the third act

Now, i fundamentally disagree about the "pushing the hero aside" part : they are not underaged children who needs overprotection. No, they are the heroes, the spotlight should be on them.
Pushing them aside not only reduce their role and strip them of their agendas, but it also limit their growth. They should eperience failure firsthand, pay the price and assume the consequences by themselves.
How are they gonna learn if random people pay the price for them ?
How are they gonna mature if someone else take the blame for them ?
How are they gonna rise up if they don't fall in the first place ?

 

I didn't have any issues with Rose in VIII. I liked her in VIII. But I don't know where they're going to take her character in IX. All of our characters (Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo, Hux) have a clearly identifiable trajectory, but Rose was there only really for Finn. I like to be surprised, but I feel she might die.

 

I for one am hoping that Ep IX explores cannibalism as it relates to the GFFA. Rose's fatty oils being used as lubricant for the Falcon would be a fitting end to a character we a.) don't know all that well, and b.) wouldn't be missed too obviously.

I think a simple line like "Rose was a hero to the Resitance/Rebellion/Good Guys.....her fatty oils are what's keeping the hopes alive."

All: "So say we all!!"

They can also spin-in some story of food culture in SW. "Rose's flesh was a bit gamy, but it was perfectly cooked, and the presentation is wonderful. Maybe season a bit more aggressively in the next round."

Cook: "Yes chef. Thank you chef. (jerk!!)"

Chef: "You did think to save the fatty oils, right?"

Cook: "Oh yes, chef. To lubricate the Falcon's motor parts....if that pleases you."

Chef: "And the droid joints too?"

Cook: "Well obviously the droid joints. Duh?"

Chef: "Then my work here is done."

A subsequent sequel trilogy will then be devoted to Rose's fatty oils and how they relate back to the larger narrative.

EDIT: Two stars for mentioning Finn as a 'pipe cleaner'. We alls saw that coming a mile away.

 

I think that Rose will continue her role as Finn's conscience in Episode IX. Or she might get her own arc instead. I'd be okay for either of these two.

 

It definitely doesn't limit their growth.

If this were the third film of the trilogy, I'd agree with you.

But we all know that this is the second one.

Now if JJ still has the main heroes spinning gears in Episode IX, then I'll have to eat crow.


Rose couldn't have been set up with too much stature, experience etc. because then she wouldn't have fallen for DJ just like Finn.

And Rian's script needed them to.

Yeah, the character of Rose was not needed, at all. However, since they added her, my thought is that they should do something with her now. I completely agree with you on the question of Maz and how she got the Skywalker lightsaber. That's another question that they seem to throw away with no explanation, like so many other questions! Maz would be a good character to give Rey some guidance and I don't know why the limited her role so much. It's probably too much to hope that Ep 9 will include Maz more AND give some explanation about the lightsaber.

 

I think 9 needs to focus on Rey, Finn, and Poe, but it would be strange to write Rose out. Really, anyone missing would be noticeable when the Resistance has like 15 people left.

If anything, if 9 would go similar to an idea I had with Leia having gone on ahead to secure alliances in the galaxy and our heroes fighting parallel battles and seeing the Resistance grow due to Leia's diplomatic efforts (without Leia ever being on screen), then I think maybe we could have Rose with Leia for a short time, perhaps coming back later in the film to update Rey and Poe on Leia's progress.

 

The only person who was asking how she got the lightsaber was Han.

And guess what.....given his current status....he isn't asking anymore....lol


Also lol on people wanting less Rose. She probably won't have as much screen time as TLJ, but she'll still be there.

You think TPTB, who've tried to make the Sequel trilogy female accessible is going to disregard Rose.

In Episode IX, for all intents and purposes, we've lost Leia, Phasma and Holdo.

You think LucasFilm is going to start back to only marketing just Rey, when the big controversy going into TFA, was that there was only 1 new female. Same with Rogue One.

Right now, only Rey and Rose are the main living female characters.

With Maz, Connix, D'arcy and others being support.

Believe me, Kennedy's not going to go backwards.

 

A lot of assumptions coming from me, but, I can only assume that a junk scavenger found the light saber and that's how Maz got it. I'm also assuming that Rey will fix the saber since it appeared that she had the pieces to it at the end of TLJ. I hate to assume ANYTHING when it comes to this trilogy, but I'm going with those ideas for now!

Hey, I'm still asking about the saber!! I'm going with my junk scavenger theory. I'm hoping that they give Maz and Connix a better supporting role since we've lost Leia.

 

It will go one of three ways for her:

1. She'll stay a supporting character in Finn's arc.

2. Like Poe, she'll be elevated to main character status for the next movie, complete with her own arc.

3. Her role will be trimmed down to very little

 

I think they need to focus on the (lacking) relationships of Finn, Poe, and Rey. They didn't get enough interaction time and putting another character into the mix will further distract from their needed development). I do think Rose could work as a character like Forge in X-Men as a background mechanic. She could be in some scenes. I actually think she could have some cute interaction with Chewy and the droids. But as for the others, they really need to focus on the bond between the new 3 or it won't work.

 

I think they should focus on Rey and Finn. As they have always done. Now that Rey and Finn are back together they have gold in their hands.

I don't know what may yet come for Rose.
I Definately Love the girl, she represents all of the Resistance.
So I'll patiently wait the next two years to find out.
