For the record, the film Dances with Wolves came out in 1990--well over 30 years ago. Are you going to say the same thing about The Mandalorian? It's a remake of Lone Wolf and Cub from 1970.

Hope you're right. That would be a kick-butt finale!!!!!

No, actually I wasn't talking about The Mandalorian. I was talking about the "Dances with Wolves", "The Last Samurai", "Little Big Man", "A Man Called Horse", "47 Ronin", "Gladiator" (when he becomes accepted by the other gladiators), "Avatar", etc. etc, etc...... Storylines similar to the "outcast or outsider joins a group he knows nothing about, is eventually accepted as a member, etc".

Yep, the 'outsider-joins-a-group' theme has been a powerful literary theme for centuries.

Like most great story-telling themes, there's usually at least one tale to be spun with it for each new generation.

I don't mind that story theme if done well and still entertaining/good. Not every story needs to be original and I felt the same way with Avatar despite many sh*ting on it for that. It all just depends on the characters and how the story plays out.

It's different and fresh enough here for me

It's a strong trope, traditionaly called the "mighty whitey" trope (due to the fact that it typically features a white protagonist going native in a none-white (sometimes coded as a primitive alien) culture and inspiring them into rising up against oppression or somesuch). It also, in addition to @Lock_S_Foils' excellent list, includes classics (and duds) like Pocahontas, Lawrence of Arabia, The Man Who Would Be King, Rambo III, Return of the Jedi, Last of the Mohicans, and, famously, Dune, and of course, loads and loads others.

It is, however, not the trope that makes something good or bad, but it's execution, and while TBoBF goes through the motions as strictly as ANH does the heroes journey trope, it does it rather well, with power, excitement, and emotion. Good stuff.

I am hoping for a surprise or two and knowing F&F I think we will see some.

As far as the Dances with Wolves storyline I will concede the point. I will go with it for now.

Hey one question for everyone, and I guess I missed it, but where did it say the little outpost he went to , to get the bikes, was Tosche Station? as an old guy I guess I missed that.....but it was cool

Way off topic, but the idea for the Luke we saw in TLJ came from George Lucas. I don't think he can disrespect a character he created.
This is a little hyperbolic. We haven't seen any films since the TV series landed and TV makes more sense to me to feed Star Wars fans who want "pro-wrestling/soap opera" stories. I don't mean that as a negative, but a lot of the chatter about Mando/Boba Fett hasn't been about the story. It's about what wish fulfillment character will be revealed. I will say both Mando/Boba Fett have done well so far in not going overboard in this regard.

That said we've got a wait before we see something that's actually new for Star Wars. Obi Wan/Andor are gonna lean on memberberries. I'm hoping we get more new ideas in Ahsoka/Acolyte.

The show DIDN'T say BUT fans matched the interior to the outtakes of Tosche Station from back in ANH.

Also the young man and woman at the station were cast to match two of Luke's friends who he met at Tosche Station (again in outakes that didn't make it into the fiinal film.)

Thanks. So I am not suffering from old man's disease too much!

I have a copy of the 4th draft of the script from ANH (no, not an original copy).

Here is the scene at Tosche Station

    ============

EXT. TATOOINE - ANCHORHEAD SETTLEMENT - POWER STATION - DAY
Heat waves radiate from the dozen or so bleached white
buildings. Luke pilots his Landspeeder through the dusty
empty street of the tiny settlement. An old woman runs to
get out of the way of the speeding vehicle, shaking her fist
at Luke as he flies past.

    WOMAN
I've told you kids to slow down!

    INT. POWER STATION - DAY
Luke bursts into the power station, waking The Fixer, a rugged
mechanic and Camie, a sexy, disheveled girl who has been
asleep in his lap. They grumbled as he races through the
    office, yelling wildly.

    FIXER
Did I hear a young noise blast through
    here?

    CAMIE
It was just wormie on another rampage.

Luke bounces into a small room behind the office where Deak
and Windy, two tough boys about the same age as Luke, are
playing a computer pool-like game with Biggs, a burly,
handsome boy a few years older than the rest. His flashy
city attire is a sharp contrast to the loose-fitting tunics
of the farm boys. A robot repairs some equipment in the
    background.

    LUKE
Shape it up you guys!... Biggs?

Luke's surprise at the appearance of Biggs gives way to great
joy and emotion. They give each other a great bear hug.

    LUKE
I didn't know you were back! When
    did you get in?

    BIGGS
Just now. I wanted to surprise you,
hot shot. I thought you'd be here...
certainly didn't expect you to be
    out working.
    (he laughs)

    LUKE
    The Academy didn't change you
much...but you're back so soon? Hey,
what happened, didn't you get your
    commission?

Biggs has an air of cool that seems slightly phony.

    BIGGS
Of course I got it. Signed aboard
The Rand Ecliptic last week. First
    mate Biggs Darklighter at your
    service...
    (he salutes)
...I just came to say good-bye to
    all you unfortunate landlocked
    simpletons.

Everyone laughs. The dazzling spectacle of his dashing friend
is almost too much for Luke, but suddenly he snaps out of
    it.

    LUKE
    I almost forgot. There's a battle
going on! Right here in our system.
    Come and look!

    DEAK
    Not again! Forget it.

EXT. TATOOINE - ANCHORHEAD - SETTLEMENT - POWER STATION -
    DAY

The group stumbles out into the stifling desert sun. Camie
and The Fixer complain and are forced to shade their eyes.
Luke has his binoculars out scanning the heavens.

    LUKE
    There they are!

Biggs takes the binoculars from Luke as the others strain to
see something with the naked eye. Through the binoculars
Biggs sees two small silver specks.

    BIGGS
That's no battle, hot shot... they're
    just sitting there! Probably a
    freighter-tanker refueling.

    LUKE
But there was a lot of firing
    earlier...

Camie grabs the binoculars away banging them against the
building in the process. Luke grabs them.

    LUKE
    Hey, easy with those...

    CAMIE
    Don't worry about it, Wormie.

The Fixer gives Luke a hard look and the young farm boy shrugs
    his shoulders in resignation.

    FIXER
I keep telling you, the Rebellion is
a long way from here. I doubt if the
Empire would even fight to keep this
system. Believe me Luke, this planet
is a big hunk of nothing...

Luke agrees, although it's obvious he isn't sure why. The
group stumbles back into the power station, grumbling about
    Luke's ineptitude.

This is really why I was so excited to see BK. I have all the Marvel OB1 issues since he is my favorite character, as an OT ANH Fan Ob1-Wan Kenobi, that old crazy wizard is my favorite, anywho, we will be back on Tatooine again for the OB1 series, maybe we'll see more Tusken Raiders as well, so I know allot of fans will get tired of this setting, but Ewan McGregor will save this show as well as Anakin if he makes an appearance. Mike Mayhew is one of my favorite illustrators, his work on this book is magnificent to say the least.

Anywho, let's not call out anyone, I know I'm guilty of this, and label them a hater unless they go off the rails, notify a mod and we will handle it from there. For the most part, everyone has acted in a civilized manner, so let's continue discussing TBOBF. Whether you enjoy this show or not you are entitled to your opinion. for the record, I like Star Wars in space as well, the ships, space battles, etc. We are being told a story planet side, for now...

I'm really enjoying Star Wars the art of the Mandalorian. The work the artist have done on that show makes me appreciate these Star Wars series much more. I can't wait for Star Wars the art of the Book of Boba Fett.

For the record, it was Emergency Awesome, who first led me to believe that it was Boba Fett who walked up to Fennec Shand's body on the sands of Tatooine in episode 5 of the Mandalorian, the Gunslinger. He thoroughly explained his theroy to the sound of his cowboy boot spurs. Only Boba Fett walks with that sound... and here we are! HAHA :p

Yes my friend, and its worth every penny I paid for it. The book explains how Dave Filoni asked Kathleen Kennedy if he could branch off to direct live action. She encouraged him to take that leap into live action production. He explains his visits on the sets of TFA and Rogue One and how he was humbled when Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams applauded him for his work on the Rebels animated show. These filmmakers who were teaching him about live action appreciated his work which amazed him. Jon and Dave explain in great detail how Grogu was brought to life... As an artist myself, these successful concept artist get inspiration to create Star Wars from the same artist who have inspired me, notedly the Legend Frank Frazetta. Ironically Frank Frazetta inspired GL to create Star Wars, one of his many inspirations in terms of Fantasy art.

I know you will enjoy it as much as I have. I like Dave's sketches and storyboard illustrations. Doug Chiang has transitioned to drawing on the computer. I have all the Prequel art books. Doug was a traditional artist back then. I'm taking that leap too with Procreate for the iPad and Photoshop. I still draw and paint traditionally which I prefer. I just purchased Bandai's Razor Crest plastic model kit EX018 Silver coating version the book inspired me to pick that up too, I really enjoy your plastic model kit pics. You are an artist in your own right!

I discovered the Art of Star Wars ANH, in a New York City comic book shop called Forbidden Planet I love visiting that store. I had $20 bucks in my pocket, the book cost $19.99. I was in art school at the time, a few blocks away at The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, I stood in that bookstore and read that book cover to cover I was amazed how many different type of artist worked on a film, I wasn't aware, I only knew of comic book artist at the time, anywho, Forbidden Planet is still around, and one of my fellow art students is a manager there, its my second home. I hope you enjoy that book as much as I have!

Back on topic HAHA MY FAULT...

I have to step in the white savior trope and give my two cents regarding this topic.

I have to disagree about the white savior trope. IMO It's a rather weak depiction in TBOBF. Let me explain why.

The main character comes to a - him unknown - culture which has been shown to be evil beforehand. But during the main character's time with them, the protagonist and the audience learns that thus culture isn't bad at all but different. It a clash of cultures.

Because 'The Last Samurai' was mentioned- in this movie the Japanese Samurai are shown as extremists and unstoppable monsters. But when Tom Cruise characters is with them for months, he learns about their culture. He trains with them, he learns their language, history and language, he sees what everyone is doing- the men are doing this, the women and children are doing that etc. But Tom Cruise's character also explains his ways to the Samurai.

In TBOBF all this happens quite superficial. We almost learn nothing about the Tusken Raiders. What's the job of the men or women? How do the men treat their families? I don't even know what Boba's culture is.

Something is also missing in the Boba Fett show. Alot of people misunderstand the importance and use of the white savior trope. It's not about the main character saving a minority. No, it's the other way around. The minority saves the protagonist. They make him to the person who is then able to save them. It's a kind of redemption for the main protagonist.

Boba Fett already is this redeemed person at the start of the show. There is no build up for him becoming that person.

Last but not least the white savior trope often provides the main character a psychological parent. In the case of The Last Samurai it's the leader of the Samurai.
There's not such person for Boba, at least not yet.

Amazing, everything you just said was wrong.
I don't even know where to begin. TBOBF is not a redemption story. He's not kylo ren. His character development is becoming a leader. The tribal leader is his "psychological parent".

I know it isn't a redemption story, because he's already a good guy from the very start of the story. But that wasn't my point. My argument is regarding "the mighty white savior trope" and why it actually isn't that trope or rather said a weak and superficial depiction of it.

You should actually read my post, before picking out a single minor line...

Which is completely nonsense because the ending of Mando S2 already established him as the crime lord. In TBOBF he already is the leader of the crime organisation. Yes, he has to establish himself now, but the show is NOT doing this at all. At least IMO.

    So what?

Last Samurai really did that very well, imo Boba should have concentrated on being a light-hearted show, with Boba being badass and going on fun adventures, or really give us a more grounded, deep and nuanced story that could hold up to the comparison to these fine movies. So far it's just a superficial mess that's trying to be this and that, but the action is weak and boring and the story is something done before zillion times but better.
