I’m legitimately astounded at how many people take these movies as personally as they do - that the perceived mishandling of subject matter is construed as a personal slight. It truly baffles me. Why? Why is someone’s interpretation of a fictional world contrasting with yours so thoroughly offensive?

To a colossal dope like me, ‘Star Wars’ isn’t just a bunch of movies. It’s an idea. The REAL Star Wars, as far as I’m concerned, is the one that exists in my own head. It’s that spark of imagination given flame in my mind when I was introduced to this universe of endless possibilities. No storyteller, not even the creator himself, can ever take that away from me. Nothing on a screen or a page can ever ‘ruin’ this far away galaxy for me unless I allow it to.

Deriding a movie because you thought it was a bad movie makes perfect sense to me. Not everybody likes the same thing. Life would be boring if everyone universally held the same opinions. Being disappointed because it didn’t live up to your expectations makes perfect sense to me. Having hate toward a film or its maker because it didn’t pay enough respect to your individual envisioning of a made up world, is completely mystifying to me. I could live for a thousand years and never understand.

Sorry, I just needed to get that out of my brain box and this seemed like a good place for it. Carry on.

Possibly. This thread is for those who hated TLJ, not hate all of Star Wars. Yes, I know that there are some who have sworn off Star Wars altogether after TLJ, I'm not taking it that far. The only SW movies I will not see are those that Rian Johnson writes and directs. I will keep an open mind about the others. I'm curious about Solo and Ep. 9. However, I will be checking spoilers and audience reaction before buying a ticket. No more buying tickets and making plans in advance. Look on the bright side, if those movies don't go over well, then there will be new threads for the "haters" on here and we can all yell at each other more!:D

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - A Review by a Fool.

    Where do I begin....

Going into the theatre for the first viewing there was never a thought in my mind that I could possibly not love this movie. I LOVED TFA more than I can express, so why would I expect to not like TLJ?
During the viewing I got progressively angry. Am I, a viewer, even entitled to such an emotion whilst viewing a film?!? I do not know.

I have read, watched, listened to many a review of the movie. These reviews consist of people arguing and defending the film from all depths of a shallow viewpoint.

I decided I can only review the movie from two points of view: Subjective and Objective.
I believe that a Film can be reviewed from an Objective point of view. There ARE things that make a film good and bad, this is what film-makers are taught in film school.
I believe that a Film can be reviewed from a Subjective point of view. These are things that viewers are most commonly arguing amongst themselves about.
WHY? - Why are you people arguing over your SUBJECTIVE point of view of a film. Talk about it sure, but do not argue, that does not make a lick of sense.

    Alas: my review
Subjective: I loved everything that I personally believe the movie attempted--main points being Luke rejecting the Jedi, Snoke being a springboard for Kylo's character arc, and Rey being 'nobody'

Objective: I 'subjectively' hated everything the movie did to execute these on screen - Pacing/Tone being the main objectively discussable issues.

    THE END.
NOW EVERYONE GO HOME OR I AM GONNA LOOOSOSEEEE IT!!!!

Would the opposite be true for you? If someone loved the movie or maker for various reasons, would that be mystifying?

If they loved it for no real reason beyond it successfully validating their own personal perspective on a fabricated reality, yes. That’s a concept I can’t easily grasp. It’s beyond me. Why would that sort of affirmation in value be so crucial to a person’s enjoyment? I don’t get that either and likely never will.

Lol. Kylo and Ackbar stole the show! I really need them to make more of these. There are endless possibilities with the Sequels so far.

    My thoughts on TLJ

    It is Bantha Poodoo
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 13, 2018, Original Post Date: Feb 13, 2018 ---
Honestly so disappointed with this ridiculous cash grab of a mess of a film - It was a pale imitation of a SW film it was the equivalent of a bad lip sync battle it made me think about Millie Vanilli, some of you will get that reference

Was so excited that RJ was making this film as i'm a big fan of his previous work on TV and in Cinema

All that talent all that creativity all the best tools at their disposal in the industry

Disney spent billions on 2 films and they could not even get the basics right

It was like watching a filler episode of the original Battlestar Galactica but much worse

They absolutely ruined probably 2 of the easiest heroes ( Luke and R2D2) in the history of cinema ( other than Superman) to get right

Luke gets bested by Rey in a stick fight - Right O

He acts and looks like he is on Bum Fight

R2 sidelined again and make no mistake from the original 3 films and the prequels R2 is the actual hero of those films alongside Luke from the OT

We need a master code breaker - you have R2, why is this so hard to understand and implement

No light sabre on light sabre fight

Daisy Ridley is awful in this film

My god the effects for some of the film are so bad especially the parts with Finn, BB8 and Rose on the AT-ST and Leia flying

What the hell Leia flying through space, seriously :-(

Poe D saying 'here comes the party' lifted from The Avengers. That was the moment I realised this was a by the numbers Disney movie and it was only going to get worse from that point onwards and it did

I don't care about any of the characters going forward I did after the TFA but that is ruined

This is a great comic and hits on a lot of points. I have defended TLJ quite a bit since I've seen the film but I realize I was probably in denial about he movie itself. Parts of it are great, but the complete destruction of Luke Skywalker as a character really did affect me deeply. I actually got depressed. Luke Skywalker helped me through a rough time growing up and is one of the reasons I'm here right now I think. Rian intended a certain affect, mass fan depression? How could he not have seen that coming? and why would we all want that? It is supposed to be fun.

I never wanted to see one of my hero's destroyed like that. Why do that to Luke Skywalker? I know fans will have a hundred answers but honestly, why go that route? Did we really have to have a depressed Luke who dies at the end? Could there possibly been a thousand other great and fun ways to bring him to screen? He can still have his demons but did he have to be so incredibly destroyed? Why take it that far? Then the fans God bless them, snap back at fans who hated the film when the reasons are fairly clear as day. I don't know about any of you, but I can't "like" what they did to Luke, you'd have to be a sadist to think this was a fun and cheerful way to go for Star Wars.

Luke’s greatest defining attribute is his enduring spirit. His hope. The idea was to take that away from him and then have him earn it back - an actual character arc. Maybe it could have been better executed, but I found that idea infinitely more interesting than being ceaselessly confident. Different strokes, I suppose.
Getting a hand chopped off, finding out our hero is the villain’s son, and seeing a beloved character turned into a giant paper weight wasn’t a tremendously cheerful direction to go either. This franchise isn’t exactly known for being interminably fun. Y’know?

Denial leads to anger, anger leads to bargaining, bargaining leads to depression, and depression leads to acceptance.

Were you similarly off put at all by the use of "love" in the "Thread for people that Loved TLJ"? Perhaps you have already addressed this in the "Love" thread and I just haven't seen it (I don't love the movie so I don't frequent that thread). When I titled this thread, the "Love" thread was one that already existed and I knew I would have little to contribute to that thread (and have subsequently stayed out of the thread except when I had something positive to say about the movie) so I chose the polar opposite word of "Love". That is how this title came into being. If the title that existed before was "For Those Liked TLJ" I probably would have titled this one "For Those who Disliked TLJ". I simply was picking the opposite end of the spectrum.

Ultimately my original thread was merged with another thread that had a poll, so my original comments to start the thread now start on page 3. My hope was that the negative comments would come to one area and that people wouldn't have to read them peppered through out the forums if they genuinely enjoyed the movie. And FTR, a TON of people who have negative critiques for TLJ prefaced their comments with the fact that they didn't actually "hate" the movie. But to me, that's neither here nor there. I am fine with someone saying they hate TLJ just as I'd be fine with someone saying they "hate" the NE Patriots, or the Philadelphia Eagles, or the Lakers, or the Yankees or the Red Sox. It is a turn of a phrase not necessarily an ideological declaration.

That notwithstanding, I think what bothers me a lot about this on-going conversation is the constant attempt at tone policing and passive aggressive insults being done by those who like the movie (whether they are aware that they're doing it or not). It is honestly more troublesome and annoying than the movie is. I even saw it happen in the thread to find "Common Ground". It went off the rails with the first post (IMO) with the veiled/implied insults that is becoming a hallmark of people who like the film. They just do not seem to be able to express their love for the film to those that disagree without simultaneously throwing a jab. That's my view.

Knowing how Kathleen Kennedy thinks and how poc characters are treated; I am very put off by anything new from LucasFilm aside from old content.
