Great point, missed that. Need to be more observant I guess. Wonder if we will ever see the green saber again?

It says the lightsaber was destroyed when Luke was looking at Ben sleep, then Ben woke up and threw a big hissy fit.

When Luke rejected the darkside at the end of RotJ, GL's original point was to show that Luke had conquered the darkside. Period. That was the spirit of the meaning in that moment. There would be no more temptation, no more moments of weakness or self-doubt etc. Luke had won. Luke had discovered truth and the light and now embodied those things. There weren't going to be anymore films at that point (1982/83), and the Luke character had reached such a great height, it was reasonable to assume that he had mastered his inner demons for all time, and would go on to become this "greater than Yoda type zen Jedi super master". GL more-or-less said this himself as well, that Luke would go on to become the most powerful and wisest force user for all time. You need to keep in mind that this is Luke Skywalker we're talking about here too, not some average Jedi. You really need to put on your 1983 RotJ glasses to see this properly. Luke at that moment was supposed to embody the ideal of the Lightside in a fantasy sort of sense. This might be a thing only us old fart OT fans can really understand lol. The idea that Luke would still be wrestling with fear, failure, and self-doubt 25+ years later just seems out of place from a 1983 perspective. It practically destroys his journey and accomplishments in the OT. I'd imagine (and probably 99% of fans in 1983 as well) that by the time of the ST, being 30 years after RotJ, Luke would've become this mystic zen like Jedi super master who was above and beyond any trappings of the ego, but alas ultimately your interpretation is correct because we have TLJ and it's canon, so arguing about it seems pointless. Fans who grew up in the 70's and early 80's who saw the OT at the theater when they were originally released, would see the Luke in TFA and TLJ as weird or off. What they've done is partially reset and over-humanize Luke. This modern interpretation of Luke goes against GL's original vision for the character, and what fans thought in 1983.

I like your post btw, it's well thought out and makes perfect sense in the new canon. I just don't like the new canon lol.

same here (grew up on the OT from the time i saw ANH in the theatre in '77).
yes, i admit i blanched at first, but in hindsight that was more about Ben than it was about Luke.
and Luke fulfilled all righteousness in the end. that's all that matters to me.

I second that (born a decade later though), and I want to add that Luke’s arc in TLJ hurts but that it’s supposed to. That is what makes it pay off emotionally in the end, for both TLJ and for the end of Luke’s incredible overall story.

This movie has so many small moments that make me feel like I’m back in 1980...

Artoo and Luke’s scene on the Falcon. I swear it transported me back to Luke talking to Artoo on Dagobah
The Falcon on Crait with Chewie showing off his piloting skills. That Wookie can fly on Hans level!
Luke and Leia’s reunion. When Luke gives Leia that look after she realizes he’s not actually there. Perfection.

The only thing I keep wishing for is one scene with Han, Luke, Leia and Chewie together. The actors did such a great job getting back into their old characters, it just makes me wish for a Han and Luke moment. Just one more.

If the movies ended with RotJ then I think it would be fair to believe Luke attained that type of godhood and "lived happily ever after". The thing is, if you're going to make more movies then there can't be a happily ever after. How do you make an interesting movie when Luke is the most powerful, wisest Jedi of all time? There is no real tension. If you want to make good movies, then Luke can't be a god. He has to be a flawed (real) human who happens to be a super powerful Jedi. I thought TLJ did a great job of this. I thought the portrayal of Luke in this movie was fantastic!

I'm very intrigued to see where JJ takes all of this in Episode 9.

Just watched TLJ for the 4th time, Kylo Ren is a liar he told Hux that Rey killed Snoke. I hope JJ changes the nobody parent thing. I can only hope... In JJ I trust!

When do you think Hux watches the security tapes and figures out the truth? I'm betting Hux leads a coup to overthrow Kylo.

That would be really interesting but even if there were security cameras in there Kylo could still blame it on Rey, actually only Rey and Kylo know who did it, everyone else could assume it was rey since she is the one who grabs the saber after it kills Snoke. Ren would have to explain why he took Rey's side against the guards though.

Yeah, Hux is dramatic but not entirely stupid. Plus Hux already gave him the evil eye after Kylo let his personal feelings allow the Resistance to escape. Something has to happen with these two.

I think JJ will give Hux a better role. Less comic relief.

Fair enough, I thought RotS was excellent and think it's a toss up with ESB for best of the saga. I wonder though, you said you don't have a problem with the way Luke was portrayed, but is it what you would've wanted? Is it what you would've did if you had written the story? Just curious. Same question goes to everyone who liked TLJ/ST.

You had no problem with Luke in TLJ, okay, but did you love this film as an addition to the saga?

there are lines i would have tweaked. i don't like him taunting Ben at the end. that to me was the only thing that still feels wrong because i feel like it undercuts the sincerity of his apology. but clearly Ben wasn't going to listen to him anyway, so in the end it's not a grievous offense.

otherwise i completely recognize Luke and accept him as the same character i grew up with him since seeing ANH in '77.
