As for lens flares (as a photographer) they are a naturally occurring thing because....lenses. Most fans poop their diapers over it, but it's still just poop.

    Ep 9 will be fine

I have hope because JJ said he was jealous he wasn't directing VIII after reading Rian's script. He should have exactly that question in mind: What's going to happen next?

But, yeah, TLJ might be the most rewatchable SW movie in a long, long time.

Such a great great thread, thanks @The Last Deadeye for doing this. Just got back from afternoon showing here, theater was packed. My middle son and I are the rabid SW and MCU fans in our household.....we were so hoping for the Infinity War trailer and then BOOM it is the first one. Much of the theater hooped and hollered just at that trailer so we started off rocking.

Theater goes dark...the LFL symbol comes up....then "a long time ago..." on the screen - several loud hoops and hollers.

OK so about the movie....I am just absolutely stunned in a great way. Absolutely loved it...all of it. Yes RJ took risks but I think the time was right and I have no problem with the mantle being passed to these new characters. This coming from a guy who saw the ORIGINAL SW in the theater in 1977 as a 13 yr old!!!

My favorite scenes in no particular order

    - The cave/mirror scene was just incredible cinematography. Stunning. Will be talked about for YEARS....we need a thread just on that one scene!
    - Opening space battle was awesome....Poe once again is the X-Wing GOD
    - Luke....Luke....where to begin. My most fave character of SW and I loved Hamill's performance. No problem with showing his human flaws
    - Luke and Yoda , what a great throwback to PT/OT....
    - Loved showing Poe growing into a leader
    - Snoke/Kylo/Rey showdown was superb - tense - well done all around. Awesome power of Snoke. Glimpse into Kylo's head.
    - However, my most favorite scene was the last one with the random boy....wow so powerful on so many levels....what a great way to tie it all together

After watching this movie a second time,
    I LOVE IT EVEN MORE...
    • Luke's death felt well deserved and earned, sacrificing himself so the rebellion could be reborn. Amazing!
    • Jedi's don't die, they become force ghost. ;)
    • Poe having a much larger role and being groomed to become a leader by failing was my 2nd favourite arc in the movie.
    • Finn's arc on Canto Bight went exactly how I expected it to, and didn't bother me, I even liked it more on 2nd viewing.
    • Leia in space didn't bother me as much on 2nd viewing, even Plo Koon used the force to survive the vacuum of space in TCW series, so it was already canon.
    • Rey and Kylo's dynamic was easily my favourite aspect of the film.
    • Finally getting a definitive reason for why Kylo turned is very satisfying and made me understand his anger.
    • This movie further solidifies the belief that this trilogy is secretly about Kylo's struggle, and I truly believe he will be redeemed...or will he?
    • Rey's parents being nobodies is a very logical and unexpected twist.
    • I love that with Rey's parents reveal, we now know that the three main protagonist are completely new characters that we can care about without a dependence on lineage.
    • Rey and Kylo vs. Praetorian Gaurds is easily one of my favourite star warts battle sequences ever.
I could keep going but I feel like I've already made my satisfaction with this film clear. :)

    • The switch from Resistance to Rebellion at about the 2/3 mark is so wonderful and symbolic. That word...rebels...kept creeping in
    • Absolutely. Luke knocking Rey on the head with a stick for the next 80 years...
    • It's up there for me as well. Love Poe and love that all the "old tricks" by the new characters didn't work. He had to grow too.
    • It was probably my least favorite only because the politics of it were so heavy handed. Chewie with the Porgs much more subtle.
    • Exactly. it's largely a non-factor. Leia in the most desperate time reached out to the force. The force obliged.
    • The chemistry of those two as rivals is amazing.
    • The Kylo/Luke stuff made so much sense. Luke as a person not as a legend is great.
    • I kind of don't want the redemption...this had such an upbeat end, I almost expect 9 to end more dour. Give him the next trilogy to redeem.
    • I didn't think they had the balls to do it.
    • EXACTLY. No crutch of "Oh it's Luke's kid"
    • It's up there. Along with the non-battle of Luke and Kylo on Crait.

This might be my favorite Star Wars scene. I couldn't believe it. I could see Kylo defecting, but not at that point in the film. Just a piece of pure movie magic.

OK question for everyone - Paige Tico, Rose's sister, the one on the bomber at the beginning. Her and Rose have those necklaces with the symbol on them. Any significance to that symbol? I think someone named it but I couldn't pick it up.

DJ mentioned it's a very good conductor. Some sort of smelt...
She mentions she is from a mining planet.
    Probably tied to that

Finally saw the movie tonight after having been spoiled for days. Wow, it’s so much better watching than reading (duh!). What didn’t come across was the relentless failure and winnowing down of the resistance. And then ending somehow with HOPE. It was beautiful and might be my second or all time favorite SW.

Things I worried about but didn’t bother me:

    • Rey/Ren force bonding
    • Super-Leia
    • Finn’s story
    • Praetorian Guards
    • Porg cuteness

    Pleasant surprises:
    • Maz’s scene
    • The thing between the caretakers and Rey
    • The mirror scene
    • Yoda’s dialogue about failure as a teacher which is the theme of the whole movie!
    • The last scene!!
I’m so happy with this movie.

Lucasfilm announced a book about Rose and Tico today I suspect that book will go into more detail about that question.

@Darth Fink You nailed it!! After 2.5 hours of explosions, spacecraft, light sabers, sweating, screaming, emotions etc etc. The best scene in the whole movie for me is the boy at the end. Wow so simple yet powerful. Great movie-making right there......

Unlike a lot of folks on these boards, I stayed away from predetermined expectations and went into this movie as a fan just looking for a good story. I walked out blown away by the rich depth of entertainment in each act, with intriguing new characters like Holdo and Rose... This movie was almost irreverent to the Star Wars movies of the past, and it may have not went the way I or anyone else wanted, ut this was exactly what this franchise needed. I loved Rey/Kylo teasing....the stalking Supremacy's decimation of what is left of the Resistance across open space was a throwback to the old Blackbeard pirate movies...the Throne Room scene....Luke's return....the stable boy holding the broom....all of it, and yet none of it, went the way that I thought it was going to go, and the genius of the story was Luke warned us of this early on...great job, I cannot wait until Ep9!!!

During the mirror scene, Rey narrated her thoughts to the audience. I don't think that has ever been done in a Star Wars movie before.

I liked the movie very much.
But the ONLY thing stopping me from loving the movie is what happened to Luke at the end. It's really depressing especially since he had only a few seconds in the TFA. Also, Mark Hamil was against it too. He asked Rian "Can't you wait till epi 9?" or something like that.

My thoughts could change once I watch it a second time or maybe Abrams could do something in the next film to help Luke's character arc

I did LOVE TFA though. I really love that film. Watched it many times

I enjoyed the film - and I know many other moviegoers who liked it as well. While not perfect, it was overall fresh and daring. The best scenes for me (and others I talked to) involved some scenes with Rey, Kylo and Luke. I liked how they fleshed out the new characters so we got to learn more about some of them, especially Kylo's back story. I liked Rey and Kylo's complex dynamic, and hope their relationship progresses in the last film. Oh, and that fight scene in the throne room was epic and possibly the best fight scene in any SW films! I can see why some fans would be unhappy about Luke's story arc, but I do like how he ended up being heroic in the end - in an unexpected way. I was a little surprised about Snoke's early end, something you might expect to see in Episode IX. I actually do like Rey's background - that she can be a "nobody" but be someone great in SW, i.e. you don't have to be a Skywalker or have the right genes to save the galaxy. However, perhaps they should not have made her background - and Snoke's - so much of a 'mystery box' from the beginning. It's ironic that you had some fans who complained that The Force Awakens was too similar to A New Hope. Now, you've got some saying TLJ is too "different" from other Star Wars movies. Geez! just can't win. Oh well, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next installment.

Super Leia was awesome. I wasn't expecting that at all. It was also really beautiful how she flew through space. It's a beautiful scene and a nice way to say goodbye to Carrie

Also, I liked when she shocked Poe. That was funny and cool

Yoda was awesome. Him using the Force means Luke could still use the force in Epi 9.

Is Rey a Jedi now? How did that happen? Just curious because I always get confused how they become Jedis
