How is she not a "Mary Sue"? What is it that she is not good at? What is it that she needs to learn? What is it that she is not able to do? I don't see what it is that she needs to learn from Luke. Maybe she will teach him.

To be completely fair, she only managed to figure out she can mind trick people and move things with her mind on her own, there's still plenty of stuff luke can tell her she'll be able to do. He could even train her in the 2 minutes it takes to master the skill afterwards.

She pulls some tricks, purely by instinct when backed into desperate situations. And she uses them on weak-willed opponents, or ones with multiple handicaps. Fan hyperbole aside, that hardly makes her a master. Merely naturally talented, you still need to learn how to harness those skills and use them to their full effectiveness.

But this is a Finn thread, so back on topic. Boyega's comments about his role being "more physical," and the fact that he's apparently training with the people who helped Michael B. Jordan bulk up for Creed, makes me really interested to see where they go with him.

I don't think calling Rey a "Mary Sue" is going to help you out much since that label means different things to different people. Instead, I simply say that she was overpowered in TFA. I hope Rey and Finn are more balanced out in VIII. He needed saving way too much.

Finn is going to use a lightsaber in episode VIII since they already trained John Boyega to use it in TFA.

Boyega's lightsaber training was for TFA, not necessarily VIII and beyond. Just wish Finn was trained with it, too.

I'm sure episode 8 will give him a chance to, for now I like his skill with a blaster.

    I googled it:

"A Mary Sue for female characters and Gary Stu or Marty Stu for male characters is an idealized and seemingly perfect fictional character, a young or low-rank person who saves the day through unrealistic abilities. Often this character is recognized as an author insert and/or wish-fulfillment."

People mostly call Rey a Mary Sue because she's very powerful, highly skilled and pretty much never needs rescuing.

The funny thing is that we don't know a thing about her to even call her that .

Mostly correct; what we know so far says she is not.

Rey is not idealized. She's not Wonder Woman.

Rey is not seemingly perfect. People who argue to the contrary aren't honestly viewing the film; they miss her several imperfections. They miss that she actually gets saved by Finn early in the movie - a Mary Sue wouldn't need saving. They miss the obvious mistake with the release of the Rathtars. They miss that she runs away from her "destiny" initially - a Mary Sue doesn't run away from destiny but instead idealistically and cheerfully embraces it.

Rey's abilities are not unrealistic, her "unrealistic" abilities are actually pretty standard for force-sensitives, and there is no canon requirement that any of them require intensive training before use.

Rey's character is not an author insert.

Rey's character could be a wish fulfillment substitute, remains to be seen.

People misuse the term "Mary Sue" to throw shade on the Rey character and the movie.
