As is your prerogative, and as is mine to say exactly that when I really felt the "Leia-space-floating-force-returning" to her ship scene was slightly hokey and not that it should've been eliminated, but...just different as it seemed a bit contrived. Then there were the repeated comedic lines that kept coming over and over and over...and a lot of people have been irritated by it.

Be VERY SURE that I loved this movie, just like the rest of them that i've seen since I stood in that line in '77 for the first one, but each one has elements that people don't like....those two were the "Oh please, no" moments from the latest installment for me...whether you take issue or not. :)

There's a difference between saying you felt something was off, and saying the moments were bad in the context of the film the director was trying to make. If you're just saying you didn't enjoy those moments, that's understandable. If you're saying they are bad moments that ruin the story that Rian was telling, then I'd ask for something to back that up.

I enjoy coming over here, but my true message board love is my college football* team. I was over on two boards where fans of my team and our conference-mates talk mostly football. I poked over at the off topic section however, and read the TLJ thread. On both boards, where people go to talk things other than Star Wars and movies, it was about 90% positive.

Also, I have not talked to anyone in real life off the internet who where any less than mixed to positive.

Anticdotal evidence for sure, but outside the internet fandom bubble, I'm experiencing no hatred of this film.

*since this board seems to have an interntional membership, I should clarify American-rules not Association-rules football.

At work, it seems everyone who was a casual fan loved TLJ. Movie buffs not usually obsessed with SW also loved it. But two guys who had elaborate theories about Snoke and Rey's parents seemed very mad. Not a big sample size, but it feels like what I'm seeing online.

Rian has said Rey’s parents didn’t change from what JJ intended. JJ always intended for her to be a no body. JJ has said the same thing. JJ even hinted at it through Maz when she said they were not coming back. Watch the Maz scene it’s clear Rey’s parents never mattered.

As for the Skywalker family. Has it ever occurred to anyone that the Skywalker family needs to end? That after IX the Skywalker name will be gone from the galaxy. This may be the rise, fall, and death of the Skywalkers. If this is the story of the death of the Skywalker family Rey should not be one. Having the Skywalker family end would be a complete story at the end of IX.

To a point someone else made that the PT had a skywalker we could route for my question is who? Anakin was a whining brat and seemed spoiled and couldn’t followed orders or rules. Padme was a Skywalker by marriage not by birth and she had very little story in ROTS. Further her death is the worst in all of the SW movies. She died from a broken heart when she just had twins. Most men and woman I know would live for there kids at that point not die because she is heart broken. That really hit home for me because my son was born shortly before it came out and there is no way I could ever leave him alone in the world because I was sad. Her death really made her a weak person and one that I didn’t respect. It’s hard to say she could be routed for as a Skywalker.

Do you have the source for that? I'm surprised JJ had the same idea. It felt like he was setting up a different direction that Rian ultimately went, but I could be wrong.

Im not dissapointed by anyone, they are entitled to their opinion.

I just wished they were a little bit more open minded in accepting what they are given, as i do.

I loved this film and i belive it will age like fine wine. People will come to love it in time it is stunning and different and it has balls and that is what the Star Wars universe needed

The ridiculous pandering in the casino scene is one of my many problems with the film.

Lando RACISM. They put one black guy in the movie and make him a TRAITOR. Why doesn't YODA travel with LUKE to BESPIN? He fits in easily in that X-Wing. Ohhhhh that SPACE SLUG just didn't feel like Star wars to me. So lazy the writing that they all conveniently END UP AT BESPIN TOGETHER. And what's the FUNCTION OF THAT WAMPA SCENE. You could even see that its a puppet. I hated the music. Continuously rehashing of EXISTING themes, and this stupid MARCH constantly ruining perfect scenes. Don't let me get started about those FORCE SKYPE SCENES. What lazy writing. Luke calling Leia with the FORCE? Vader doing the same with LUKE? My god...my god. I didn't like A New Hope, but what THIS MOVIE ESB is doing is absolute nonesense ruining the franchise. Force Ghosts? WTF!?

The animal rights, and economic class stuff i'm usually ok with, they are interesting themes that make the universe seem more real- It was just way too on the nose for me.

Edit- newbie here- how does one rate posts?

    Great post.

I have one major disagreement. I don't understand why people are suggesting that Rian's story was drastically different than JJ's. Every moment and twist of the story existed in fan theory had has been discussed on these forums in many cases before TFA.

Snoke being just a stepping stone for Kylo. Prior to TFA heck I predicted Kylo would kill Snoke in TFA. I was wrong by 2 acts.
Rey random- Daisy was shocked by the fact that people still had questions about her parents. JJ- had to back pedal his "Rey's parents aren't in TFA oh I mean she doesn't meet them." (loose paraphrase).
People speculated broken Luke the hermit since before TFA.

I honestly was amazed at how much was similar. Yet everyone seems to think there are these vast versions. Now there are a few popular theories that people saw "evidence" but at this point I think the distance is between the fan theories people saw in TFA as confirmation bias and what Rian did.

It wouldn't be so bad, but it is quite obvious there is a group of fans who decided they don't like this and have gone on sites like Rotten Tomatoes to juice the reviews to the negative side. That's just wrong. Hate it all you want. That's your right. But reviewing the film multiple times and giving it multiple negative reviews just to make it look bad is wrong.

And really, the fume is just over the top. A grown man said he needed to go have a drink when the leaks were at their high point on Sunday December 10. Another person (I'm assuming they are an adult) was acting like their child had passed away. Seriously. Over the top internet drama. That's what is annoying (not disappointing, just annoying as heck). I despised the PT (the effects, the acting, the dialogue, the lack of characterization). The book versions are way better (although I did like the politics). Having said that, I didn't and I wouldn't act as if the sky was falling and this was the end of Star Wars. If the Phantom Menace didn't destroy then nothing will. LOL

There are also several "right-wing" groups, to say it mildly, who have called on their members to destroy the new "SJW iteration of Star Wars". If you go into the "Those who hated TLJ" thread you see some of that sentiment reoccuring. I'm glad this negative review hording and internet downvoting activism is an american thing. Here in the Netherlands, where I live, the movie has been received by 'thunderous applause' by fans and critics alike. When I go to these american platforms it is as if I'm entering another world. The US critics absolutely love it. But apparently a number of US fans don't and they've decided to make a fuss about it.

I feel you. I now relate to grumpy Luke, I just want to seclude myself on an island away from the hyperbolic negative fans. I was overwhelmed by the movie from the first time I saw the TLJ, by the second viewing I really enjoyed the film. I had expectations of Luke of being the same person he was 30 years ago. Hell, I am so not the same person now than I was 30 years ago. The older I get, the more I have a general dislike of the actions of mankind as a whole. So, It was a ridiculous assumption from me to expect Luke not to change. I was appalled to read that Rian Johnson was receiving threats on Twitter from disgruntled fans. I saw a Youtube video of a guy wishing painful cancer on the creators and everyone involved in the making of TLJ. It's only a MOVIE people, no need to threaten the director and the people who make the film. Its okay not to like TLJ, movies are subjective, but some of the negativity is so over the top. So yeah, I would say I am little disappointed in some of the fans.

The major difference between TLJ and TFA imo is that JJ set up mysteries that didn't matter to the story in order to let our imaginations run wild. TLJ doesn't.. it provides startling and confident revelations, informed by what our expectations were of what was in that mystery box. Those revelations drive the war story that the director was trying to tell.
