all good questions. The Luke we last saw in ROTJ would have been in the fight against the dark side and the FO.

pretty much all we have is this:-

Han Solo: He was training a new generation of Jedi. One boy, an apprentice, turned against him, destroyed it all. Luke felt responsible. He just walked away from everything.
Finn: Do you know what happened to him?
Han Solo: A lot of rumors. Stories. People that knew him best think he went looking for the first Jedi temple.

not much to go on really.

excluding the obvious that he just stormed off upset and lived like a hermit for 30 years, there are some alternatives..

perhaps he has been fighting a bigger threat than we have seen so far.
perhaps he knows exactly what has been happening, and it needs to play out for want of a better term.
perhaps he has been posting on the plagueis conspiracy threads and lost track of time.

grasping at straws, but what i don't want to see is Rey giving Luke a pep talk and telling him to get back in the fight.
Whatever he is doing, and whatever he has done needs to have a solid purpose. He is the last Jedi Knight !

    From the novel:

He was training a new generation of Jedi. There was no one else left to do it, so he took the burden on himself.. Everything was going good, until one boy, an apprentice, turned against him and destroyed it all. Everything Luke had worked toward: gone. Luke felt responsible. He walked away from everything".

It strikes me that those two highlight lines suggest that everything was going well in Luke's life. And his focus was on building a Jedi Order. It would strike me as odd if Luke had a family before the Jedi were destroyed and that he lost his wife and child somehow. Not only this, but it seems that Luke was devoted to building the Jedi Order once more and having a family would strike me as being in opposition to this.

Luke was never trained in the idea that Jedi are supposed to be celibate. Before the prequels that was never a thing. Not following it makes complete sense for Luke, even if I'm 90% sure that Luke is going to be gay.

I think it was clear the Jedi avoided marriage in the OT. Kenobi was a hermit on Tatooine. And I didn't see Mrs Yoda.
For me it was always clear that the Jedi dedicated their lives to the Force. That having a family was too much of a distraction and in fact dangerous for them.

I never saw this in the OT. Yes, Kenobi was a hermit and Yoda more or less as well, but they were also fugitives, so as a kid I thought their families were killed or imprisoned. I never got the idea in the OT alone that Jedi could not have a family. Ok, the PT showed a different picture, but the old Jedi order is now also gone. ;)

Fair enough. I just personally felt that, as a Jedi, one must not have distractions that deviate you from your duty or could be used against you (turn you to the Dark Side). You must be prepared to serve the Force first.

    Yoda
: Stopped they must be. On this all depends. Only a fully trained Jedi Knight with the Force as his ally will conquer Vader and his Emperor. If you end your training now, if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did, you will become an agent of evil.
    Obi-Wan: Patience!
Luke: And sacrifice Han and Leia?
    Yoda
: If you honor what they fight for, yes!

Sure, this was about the threat of Luke turning bad but it also highlighted how the Jedi must be prepared to put the Force first.
Now, Luke was unable to do this. He was unwilling to sacrifice his friends. And this highlighted the point - if you have a family, especially kids, you aren't going to put anything before them. And as kids tend to be a product of marriage then it is best for a Jedi to avoid both.

That's what I took from the OT. The PT just went further.

Lucas said for PT Jedi that attachments were forbidden, but they were never requested to be celibate. ;)

I do agree to some point the a family can be used against a Jedi as a threat. But that's also good material to tell stories. :p
My idea is that Luke tried to balance both, family and Jedi duty until some tragic event happened, in which maybe his wife was killed and his kid thought to be dead. Then he changed his view and took all effort into rebuilding the jedi order and train Ben, but his heart was not 100% into it. So he could not help Ben. At least I can see something like that and I saw Luke always as someone who is learner. If plan A doesn't work, he goes for plan B. ;)

So the point is that jedis can have a family but they won't be attached to them.

That could explain why Rey was lifted on Jakku. Sorry girl, I can't get attached to you so I'd rather leave you with a thief than break my veils.

This pretty much settles the debate. Might as well close this thread based on this new evidence. ;)
Maz: Tell me about the girl.
Han: I thought she stole the Falcon and I told her and the other guy I'd shoot them into space.
Maz: So I guess you don't know much about her?
    Han: Nope
Jedi don't have to be celibate. They're just not supposed to marry. Luke has spent his life acquiring Jedi lore and also George Lucas told the story group that Luke wouldn't marry. So there's that.

I guess you understand what I meant with what I wrote, children perceive these things differently :)
Ofcourse it's not hard evidence but IMO it's worth mentioning and food for thought.

Evidence for that? you mean this?

GL did mention the following (in 2008)

"I’ve left pretty explicit instructions for there not to be any more features. There will definitely be no Episodes VII-IX. That’s because there isn’t any story. I mean, I never thought of anything! And now there have been novels about the events after Episode IV, which isn’t at all what I would have done with it. The Star Wars story is really the tragedy of Darth Vader. That is the story. Once Vader dies, he doesn’t come back to life, the Emperor doesn’t get cloned and Luke doesn’t get married …"

You can take his words literally or he says it because there just isn't a story after ROTJ....

Then there's also some other story which shows the opposite, shortly after ROTJ GL did want Luke to become a father, just watch Mark Hamill's face at the end of the interview (he didn't have the pokerface back then he has today).

Based on statements by Pablo Hidalgo in regards to Lucas' thoughts about Luke/Mara Jade.

That's specifically about Mara Jade. If Luke has a child it won't be through a marriage. We'll learn more when the Making Of book comes out, but George's plan for Anakin's grandchildren were likely though Leia and not Luke. The story group is still following Lucas' rules in canon.

I've seen the Siskel interview video a few times. So much has changed since that was recorded that it's basically irrelevant. A lot of the Jedi Order stuff Lucas came up with happened during the making of the prequel trilogy.

It's simply worth putting yourself in the position of the story group and deciding whether Jedi should now get married and have kids. Weigh up the pros and cons.

I'm utterly against religious doctrines in the real world. I think it's crazy for priests etc to be celibate. However, in the SW universe where you have to take into account the pull of the Dark Side and the immense power available to a trained Jedi then for me it is simply too dangerous to allow Jedi to have kids.

That's not what I read in Pablo's comment, Pablo says that GL never thought that Mara Jade would be Luke's wife, not that he won't marry someone else.
Besides that, he could have a child without getting married, plenty of options / scenario's to explain a long lost / presumed dead / or never knew about daughter.

True , it's a long time ago, but the thing is GL initially DID have this plan for the character Luke, so IMO it's not something that's weird or out of the question.

Also take into account that after TBOE the Sith were defeated and the empire was taken down, a perfect time to start a family, risk for implications was low.

The question is into which direction did Lucas original plans change, or are they still the same? We have already 1 Solo kid, so planned Lucas a Luke kid and rewrite changed to a random? Or planned Lucas a 2nd Solo kid and it changed to Luke's kid? Some artwork hints a little to the 2nd one.

I think you're missing my larger point. Lucas and the story group work under the rule that Jedi's don't get married. So unless Luke was going to walk away from building a Jedi Order he wouldn't have taken a wife. One could argue that the story group may just abandon Lucas' plan, but we don't have evidence yet that they're ready for that kind of departure.

My best guess based on what we know (not what we want to know) is that George planned on Leia/Han having multiple kids. Luke would be their teacher, but he wouldn't' have any children of his own. I believe that Kennedy and Co. really liked Lucas' idea of Rey's character arc (young woman becoming a Jedi), but went in a different direction with everything else.

It might be time to leave this thread for awhile. With no new news we keep going in circles about the same content. There's nothing wrong with that as new people jump into the fray, but we haven't had anything happen since Bloodline that's really changed what we know.

Rey Skywalker - still a possible although complicated due to Luke's timeline.
Rey Solo - less likely than Rey Skywalker and also unlikely based on Bloodline.
Rey Someone - Seems the most likely scenario based on what we know right now.

What is satisfying in this writing ? The outcome or the plot ?

We are talking about Luke Skywalker, the last jedi, supposed to be an example for the galaxy. Is he that dumb and blind ?

He didn't give up with the most evil person in the galaxy against all odds feeling that there was still good in that machine and he will give up on a supposed dead daughter ( without any dead body ) and be back at this journey to find more about the Force ?

That guy can see force ghosts and those force ghosts wouldn't have a clue that her daughter is still alive ?

Is that the Luke we know ?

30 years have passed @Bandini. none of us know Luke anymore.

If i was Luke... i'd be thinking that as the Last Jedi alive who just helped restore order to the galaxy, i'd best put on my best saturday night Robe, a splash of after shave and get procreating.. before i get too old and the galaxy is in danger again with nobody to save it.

would he have learnt from his father's experience that a powerful force user having kids is a bad thing? or maybe a very good thing?

i'm just throwing this up in the air mate, as i honestly don't know. i swear i get more confused by this debate every day lol.

do i think Rey is Luke's daughter? yes. do i have the first soddin clue as to how he had a daughter and manage to lose her on Jakku in the hands of Plunkt? hell no

the story made me want Rey to be Luke's daughter. i've watched the film so many times it's actually an embarrassing number (even here among you lot lol) but for the life of me... i see no outcome but Luke being Rey's father. i cannot back it up with any proof.

So your guess is that Luke has fallen to temptation ?

We know a little bit with novels don't we ? Why Leia would have sent her own son to a fallen man ? Why this fallen jedi would have build an academy ?

Take my advice, watch this movie like it is the 1st SW you ever see without any Skywalker obsession and you will conclude that absolutely nothing ties Rey to Luke.

There were many many jedis in the history of the order and you know what ? None of them had force sensitives parents. None except Anakin. So you don't have to act like a guru and have multiple children and wives to build something. It's not the way to the light, it's not the way of faith nor spirit, it's the way of pleasure and pride.

Edit : I don't want to see any complaint about Kylo Ren being redeemed or whatever because obvioulsy he's the good guy in this story.

    1) That's a terrible idea
    2) Luke following that idea is also a terrible idea
    3) George Lucas has bad ideas
    4) Lucas has already said that they scrapped his ideas

If Luke turns out to be gay and never met a man he wanted to marry, that's one thing. If Luke is straight and never met the woman he wanted to marry that's another. But the idea that Jedi can't get married or "know love" was one of the dumbest things the prequels came up with, and only makes sense if you assume that the prequel Jedi were flat out wrong. We didn't watch six movies of the prequel Jedi being arrogant and self righteous whilst not understanding pretty much anything only for Luke to repeat all of their mistakes.

    1) Matter of opinion
    2) Matter of opinion
    3) George Lucas also had good ideas
    4) The story group has stated they used some of his ideas.
