To be fair we have little or no information at this point because Luke's past is such a mystery. I lean random simply because I think the Solo theory is dead and Rey's timeline doesn't fit with Luke... yet.

The thing that doesn't sit right with me is that 2nd TFA trailer with the Luke voice over from ROTJ which he rerecorded for the trailer. What was the point of that? Also, sometimes the most obvious answer is the answer. Most people think Rey being connected to Luke because that's the impression TFA left.

It seems the story group is trying to expand the story some so ultimately I think that's why Rey will be random, but we still don't have much to make a call.

Another thing I didn't like about TFA and the new cannon...they know who Snoke is. That he leads the FO. That he's of the darkside.

Then why the EFF didn't they do anything?! Why did Luke allow him to exist at all and not go against him with his new Jedi? Han and Leia talk about him like it's no big deal...like it's just known that this guy is out there and nobody can stop him basically.

It makes our heroes weak and inept, after they fought so hard through 3 films to overthrow the evil sith/empire and at the very least draw equal to them in terms of military, government, etc...as we are told happened 1 year after ROTJ at Jakku.

They should have done more against Snoke and it makes me think of Luke as sad and defeated...
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 1, 2016, Original Post Date: Nov 1, 2016 ---
Yeah, that was interesting - especially since they didn't just rearrange the ROTJ dialogue from old audio, but Hamill confirmed himself that he re-recorded it.

Again, it could all be slight of hand, but it's things like that and the art direction, costume design, film score, etc...and those working on each thing, that said it was designed/modeled off Luke - that keep me thinking she could be his daughter.

But either way - she is the "luke" of this trilogy. Maybe that's all it means...

I'm assuming Snoke wasn't revealed as the big bad leader of the First Order until after Bloodline which was 5-6 years before TFA. At the start of the Bloodline no one even really knows about the First Order.

But is he known in that novel to be manipulating Ben?

Or at any rate - at whatever point he is known to be seducing Ben to the darkside - because it's apparently stated openly - they should've done something. Maybe I need to read the book...it just doesn't make sense that they would know about this darkside user and do nothing. (besides "go to your uncle" I mean...they should've made a move against Snoke directly)

Leia's statement about Snoke in TFA doesn't tell us much about the timeline. Ben is with Luke and supposedly doesn't know Vader is his grandfather. For all we know Ben has secretly been a member of the Knights of Ren and under Snoke's influence for years and no one knew about it until he became the Jedikiller.

How many times did the Jedi help Palpatine or didn't recognize him as the big bad? Leia got it and founded the resistance at least.

"And Daisy, who like Rey, had come from this sweet and humble place and was now quite literally carrying the torch for this saga. And her face here, this moment, where she’s reaching out to him and finds a strength and a determination. And Luke, who looks at her, just knowing what it means to accept this plea to come back and help. And we leave them here until Episode VIII.”

I really think she is Random but with an interesting past. I begin to think if Luke had visions about Rey, so he waited for her on the island

The directors of VIII and IX aren't bound by what Abrams says whether it's truth or misleads. Johnson and Trevorrow are free to agree or disagree with anything that he says and they're more interested in what Kennedy and Hart have to say than Abrams at this point. There's been other quotes such as from Lawrence Kasdan that they have no control over where the story goes outside of VII, they didn't want to dictate to the new directors, and that Rian Johnson will change it. Hell, even George Lucas wasn't bound by what George Lucas said in the past as to where his own past stories were doing.

I'm not sure what specifically this is in regards to but at this point JJ knows and has known for some time where the story is going. Trevorrow and Johnson are working together for IX. It's safe to assume the main parts of the story are already complete.

I still think Luke will turn out to be the most "successful" and one "true" Jedi at the end. Why? Because maybe he turned away from "fighting" physicly. He was seeking for knowledge. The sad Ben-Story teached him once again that "fighting for the greater good" is not the true purpose to become a Jedi. Like in the old asian traditions the final step of the "peaceful warrior" is that he is mentally strong enough to step back from wielding a weapon. His strongest weapons are experience and knowledge and this will be enough to succeed at the end. Even if he will be gone physicly at some point he will plant the seeds of knowledge in Reys mind. And that could be the most important aspect for the very difficult but not completely impossible turn around for the masked trouble boy. Perhaps she, with the help of Lukes lessons, can show him the real power of the light side of the force (and I don't mean Reylo, I would more tend to think of a scene where he has no clue how to move on with his "dark" force powers in a difficult situation and has to learn that the light side has the better answers).
If Rey becomes a real light side heroine at the very end, Luke is a winner too :).

I don't personally see that message with Luke. Throwing away his saber in rotj was the right thing for that moment. Had he continued fighting he would've turned to the dark side.

A Jedi's role is to maintain balance. Sometimes that means fighting, sometimes being passive.

For Rey to be the hero she must both match Luke but also face different trials (else this adds nothing to the mythological story). For me, what Luke did was put an end to Vader's actions. Rey must defeat Vader's dark legacy - something much harder as it isn't a tangible thing.

She'll have to do this through many ways:

    Fight Snoke (and Ren).
    Redeem Ben Solo.
Restore the Jedi Order (maybe by rejuvenating Luke or doing it herself).
Peacefully dismantling and emancipation the FO and its troopers.

Luke ended the Sith Empire but its ideals lived on along with some of its military might. Rey must stop this evil from rising again.

Besides, I can't see the message being that Jedi shouldn't fight. That would be very boring!

You missunderstood my intnentions for this post a little. I get the feeling that a lot of us - me too - have to prepare for not being too much disappointed about the possibility that Luke perhaps will not have a "force show" moment as big as we expect. It could be Rey instead. I wanted to point at the fact that if Rey is prepared to do all the stuff you listed by Luke then he is a winner too and we can be proud of him, no matter what he shows us with his lightsaber in VIII.
..and I know that its called star wars and not star peaceful sit in :D

Hey. No worries. I think I have pushed the "Yoga-Luke button" a little bit too enthusiastic.. :)
Luke and Rey will do the right thing.. and how will be revealed "soon enough" if we keep cool and learn to stay calm and wait and wait and...

See, and then links like this throw me back the other way -

    J. J. Abrams: “[Who are Rey’s parents?] Get out! Get out! Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII. So I can’t possibly – in this moment – tell you who they are. But I will say, that it is… this is all I’ll say: it is something that Rey thinks about, too.” (April 15, 2016) “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world.”

Look, this is the first, this is an opportunity of a lifetime to write a movie that is the first of a series, and there is a story to be told. And it will be. But this movie, it felt like ‘the droid is in the hands of your father, Han Solo’ was probably the one real revelatory familial piece we could get away with.”

Clearly, her parents are somebody...not just random people. Either JJ flat-out lied, or they are already in her world. And they were going to be revealed in 7, but it got pushed back. And it's supposedly super "satisfying" to the viewers...

    Bah.

    It's all a muddled mess...

Maybe I'm in minority with this, but for me this would be a heavy disappointment and Luke would be the tragic hero in such a case. I cannot see Luke as a winner when he is gone and only Rey as again the one single student. :(

I mean I waited over 30 years to see Luke in a first far away and later closer ST. Then it was announced and great until I saw TFA with cameo Luke. But ok, let us wait for the next movie and great things for Luke to come, but then again, ok, he is not restoring any Jedi order, he is not beating a big enemy, he is not bringing Ben back from the dark side, he is not doing the big force stuff and instead Rey is doing all the big stuff. Luke just trains one single student (our new new hope) and that was it for Luke (killed off) and my 30 years of waiting to see him again. :(

Not necessarily. I think JJ is simply saying that they didnt want to be revealing parentage for all the characters. That doesn't mean Rey's parents aren't "random". It could simply have been that we learned who they are without even meeting them - but even that would've been too much for one film. Too much exposition and too much of the same thing being revealed in one film.

The "super satisfying" bit is tricky but again it could just be that the point is it will be a great story rather than some connection to the original characters.

I'm of the mind that Rey's folks will have a connection to Luke and thus will tie it all in. Best to leave that for Viii as it's a great chance for Johnson to create some drama.

Well, the one piece of the one quote (a stretch, I know) contradicts that idea.

He says they are already in her world. As a direct follow-up to him saying the do not appear in TFA.

So it was either a cover, or they did appear in TFA and she just didn't know it. (which is what he implies - but again, he could be covering because he'd just accidentally spoiled Random)

Like I said, it's a mess at this point.

I still want ReySky, but am conceding evidence to Random. (mostly) :D:D:D

But if she's Luke's then her mum wasn't in tfa.
And is Solo essentially ruled out? I'm guessing it is now (TFA commentary).
