Perhaps we are looking in the wrong place. Both Finn and Kylo are traitors, both were separated from parents.

Fans understandably focus on Rey, but we often forget this trilogy is also about the big three and to provide closure for those of us who grew up with them. Many of us are parents ourselves now, which brings an entirely different set of challenges and fears.

I'm not much older than Kylo, but as a father of a young son, it's Han on the bridge confronting his son I identify with. As a father of a two year old daughter, it's not a fear of abandonment I identify with, but the deep fear of losing my daughter and then having to explain why I wasn't there for her fourteen years later.

That could very well be. Excellent point.
I'll add, in TFA we also have Han+Rey (and Rey+Kylo and Rey + Kylo killing Han).
That's why I believe Rey Solo - among all the possible solutions - may be the most interesting.

I only see two problems, if that will be the case.

The first one is just a matter of taste (mine).
I'd prefer the ST to end the Saga with a climax.
With something... powefull. I'd love to see a plot point, a story line, whaterver it is,
beside the blood connection that ties all the 9 movies and the 3 trilogies, that gives a sense
(a further, inner meaning) to all of them.

You may add "something more", but I fear it will stay on the background.
And the 9 movies saga will be just something that starts with chosen one and ends with his grandchild.
It won't be so powerfull as I hope it would be, to honor this story.
In this sense, I've said having just the father (PT), the sons (OT) and the grandchild (ST) is... an anticlimax.

I don't know how to express myself better, but I guess you can get the point.

The second, if so.. what they've done with TFA is just trivial.
They knew they cannot have something comparable to "I'm your father"
but instead of giving up to any twist (that would have been smarter) they put this mistery box
and the solution is just the less obvious.
It's not impossible. But it's poor writing, again personal taste.
It could be balanced by what we're talking about... the improvement to the characters story arc etc...

    But, hum... I shall see.

We already know Rey isn't a Solo, unless the Bloodline book is telling a fib. Because Leigh and Han only have one kid. Although, it could be that Leigh had more than one herself, but I find it doubtful.

    v good post ;)

in the early days of this thread i was strongly of the opinion that Rey is Luke's daughter.

as the days pass, and i read more opinions.. more books about the past, and try to analyse what TPTB say every once in a while - i have come to some conclusions that i don't think will shift until we see episode's 8 & 9..

Rey could be Luke's daughter.. we don't know fully what Luke's life was like 20 yrs before Rey was born.

Rey could be a Solo.. Han clearly didn't know her, although he very quickly took to her. Leia... well it's a huge long shot:-
    • Han was off world for months and never knew about the 2nd pregnancy
    • Leia had someone take Rey at birth to protect her from Snoke as she knew Snoke would get to her like Ben
    • Leia did recognize Rey at the end of TFA, but kept quiet until Rey could receive training from Luke so that she would have a chance
    yeah.. long shot.

Rey could be the child of dark sided parents.

Rey could be another child born of the force un-related to the skywalker bloodline.

I'm sure it's one of those, and i still don't like the idea that she is simply a new character, born from a normal family with no big ties to the saga as we know it. I do firmly believe that either Luke or Ben will tell Rey who she is... whether she is related to them or not, i think they will know.

anybody else here feel that as more time passes and the more information we get.. the less we know about Rey? lol

We've already tolked about Bloodline. Many here agree with you.
I do too, partially.... as for "potential" clues on TFA I guess if they want, they can still "invent" what they want.
Then we will be free to judge if it is compelling or not :)

In my headcanon, I see her as a "special" force sensitive being. Not exactly "a child of the force" because that was Anakin.
I'd say someone special but in another way... Insert [new thing whatever]

I must add in my headcanon I hope she will end up without any romance hinted.
That would be cool. My first choise.

I'm saying this as a comment to Colin's quotes.
As a woman - and a woman who got married at 35 years of age, because I do not believe marriage is what define you,
something that you have do to find your place in the world, but something you may wish to do once you've found your place in the world, instead-
that's what I wish little girls will see.

And talking about what children think (which is an interesting and very clever point made by Colin) I believe today children may really surprise us.
They may be more open minded than we are or than we think they are...
What do today children think about family? I guess their answers may be less obvious than we suspect.

However it's very difficult to see all our headcanon (whatever it is) coming true and let it be coherent with other things we know, put together or just suspect.

    That's why I came only to a theory I myself called #crazyone
(and that's not 100% my headcanon). But as long as we do it just for fun... no problem.
    We shall see ;)

Star Wars has always been aimed at children, in that we should acknowledge their perception, since the films should be accessible; When I ask my daughter what family is; a mom, a dad, and they love each other and they want what's best for their child. There's a beautiful simplicity and truth in that answer.

Frankly it's one that must be confronted should Luke be Rey's father. A valid reason must be made why Luke would've abandoned Rey on Jakku, and where the mother is. Both a father and mother are pivotal in upbringing, and a legacy character's marriage is significant, especially since there is no prequel trilogy available.

Colin Trevorrow: "I have kids. I’m a parent, and I think as a parent you get that much more attuned to the fears associated with childhood, and you remember some things that we tap into in a lot of movies. 'What’s in the closet? What’s under the bed?' But then there’s darker stuff in that that you start worrying about as a parent. 'Is my child going to be safe? Is someone going to take them? Are they going to fall ill?' And I felt like this story [for The Book of Henry] had very elemental, very classical, almost biblical ideas within it. Now that the movie’s out,
I probably can talk more openly about the idea of someone carrying on the deeds of one who has been lost in their absence. I feel like that’s an old story. Then I realized, I’ve actually seen that story, beyond one that we all are very familiar with—one I’m also involved in. But the idea that those people aren't always with us, and that sometimes adults need to remember that children are children, and we think that they’re smarter than us but they’re not. They may be smarter, but they haven’t lived as long, and I was really tapped into that too." "Honestly, I might not have made this movie at all. I just don’t know if you would have that same instinct. I had a brother too, so that’s an element, but in the end because it really is about that absolute fear that you have as a parent that you’re going to screw up and make the mistakes that are just ready to be made at every turn in parenthood, those things are certainly in the forefront of my mind." The Book of Henry is a disaster according to critics. Lucasfilm is probably too far down the road for episode IX to consider a change, but there's gotta be some nervous people after this misstep.

I often look at why a movie fails with critics.

Trevorrow apparently took a bunch risks and did of things you don't normally do. And it didn't work out.

But he took risks and did something different. If that's why it fails, I can forgive more than if it just fails at being standard.

It's been my belief for a while that Rey's disappearance wasn't the end result of Ben's fall, but the start of it.

I make my own judgement of what I like and don't like. Matter of fact I don't like every critically acclaimed movie. There are some I don't like. Just like songs. Just because it's a single doesn't mean it's good.

I agree that would be another good reason for Rey Solo.
    One of the main.
The "he would have fail you" line, refered to Han, gives me that "vibe" since day one.

You also know that I'm doubtful for other reasons, so no need to discuss them again.

But I've got a gift for you:

This is from an old canon comic: Dark Empire.
The woman is Leia, of course.

    You've got:
    - Luke turning to the Dark Side
    - Leia saving the day
    - A prophecy, which to me reminds a looooooooot the Journal of the Whils quote.
    - Please also notice the reference to "the Jedi Killer" in the prophecy... at least they read the comic preparing TFA
    - Finally... Leia pregnant with a prophesied child
    - A prophesied child, that Palpatine (he's been cloned and he is alive in this comic) wants to be "hosted" in his next life.

[And of course, we alredy know about Jacen and Jaina Solo (and the part that Anakin Solo's death played in Jacen's fall to the dark side)].

We also suspect that GL'idea for the ST was about "Anakin's grandchildren".

This is enough to speculate we're going to see a brother/sister dynamic.
Add to that (I agree if so) that it was loosing her sister what affected young Ben Solo.

And perhaps they've just "recycled" bits of Dark Empire, bits of the stories about Jacen and Jaina to produce the ST.

Honestly, it might be the case. And a plot like this has its ups when it comes to story yet to be told.
I'm less optimistic about the back-story (how they can eventually explain how Rey ended up on Jakku, Leia not feeling her daughter was still alive, etc...) but as I always said, they can give us explainations, we will free to judge if they are compelling or not.

That being said... what if the problem is, that has been already done?

What if they saved some things and "reworked" some other things... to get something less predictable?

I just think, we cannot say they did the first (past and copy) or the latter (reworked).

p.s. I won't pretend I didn't think about #crazyone because of Leia pregnant with the prophesied child.
