I hear you. I gotta admit I'm not a big believe in there being any manipulation going on, I don't even think about it.
But you are right, we have got to keep our minds open.

As to why they are not showing Luke and Leias faces?
Maybe they are saving the reveal for future teasers to have that wow moment at the end.
If that's Luke, clearly he has changed. His artificial skin is gone and how the rumors are lining up now, it seems Luke will only be really revealed at the end of the movie. So they might want to keep that reveal under wraps until the end. And they will hide his face in other sequences in the movie to not spoil the surprise.
I think it's very similar to Obi Wan in ANH. You don't see his face until he reveals himself.

Definitely a possibility. But if they go that route I think its a mistake. With Obi-Wan he was a mystery. You didn't know who this approaching old man was. Jedi Robes and R2 will mean Luke to every single person in the theater. So, unless you are setting it up for an unexpected switch and its not Luke under that hood, there is no mystery. Unless he's a cyborg under that hood. ;)

Agreed. That's why my money is on the flashback sequence that is being narrated by Rose, which is what MSW reported.

There may well be a flashback, but my gut says this isn't the droid we're looking for...

Okay I kinda posted this before but I've got a bit more to say on it now.-

    luke.gif

    Kylo-Ren.gif

note the similar colour/landscape/ fire light/ embers, in the kylo scenes and in the 'luke' scene. I think this is the same local, weather its a flashback or an 'Into' like the intro to the fellowship of the ring I don't know, I'm assuming the latter as having kylo attack and destroy a jedi training ground and have luke return to it in mourning would have a similar feeling to the opening in JJ's first startrek movie, where Kirk's dad dies, it opens on an emotional high point and also establishes the character of Kylo as a bad ass and possibly even explains why luke would go into hiding.

I would also Like to add...Jakku (or however its spelled...) I don't think there is any point having Rey hang out on Jakku opposed to having her begin on Tatooine...all the fans who watch the trailer but don't know otherwise will assume its Tatooine anyway, so it seems an odd choice to simply Replace Tatooine with Jakku from a plot point of view unless Tatooine also Features. As in, if the scenes above with luke and Kylo are on Tatooine in the opening scene to the film, where the jedi training ground is destroyed and luke goes into hiding, then that is a valid reason to put Rey on a different planet, some 'new backwater' where Kylo is not yet operating.
My only basis for this is that all the confirmed Jakku scenes feature tents, while the 'village' (which I am assuming is where luke is training the hopefuls) is all sand buildings a bit like the classic tatooine ones. also note the moisture vaporator in Kylo's shot. a lot of assumption I know, but thats my two cents on it....
Its the opening scene, we follow storm troopers and Kylo torches the place, luke returns to find it burned (ala his surrogate parents in new hope) and he sets off from tatooine trying to find out who this new sith is...

Am I the only one who thinks that J.J. and company decide how to cut their teasers depending on the leaked information so far? ;)

I was following you until here. How did you make the assumption that Luke is training people in a village?
In the behind the scenes picture we can see some of the sandy buildings, yes, but they are part of the village set. Kyli is killing the people in the village set, which has both tents and sandy structures.

I think this is 100% the case. Also G@brielgr@y claimed this to be the case when the first trailer hit.

Somebody help me with my memory - didn't MSW say the Mark Hamill was only in one scene at the end, but that "Luke" appeared in a flashback sequence played by another actor?

ah yeah, I mean it was wild speculation on my part, but from the sets with Finn and Rey I hadn't seen any of the sand structures people were assuming were' the village' so I was thinking it could just as easily be a settlement where Luke was training people, especially considering some of the village footage took place in pinewood at the same time Hamill was supposedly on set, leads me to think that it would be a 'village' that he appeared in, and Luke as far as I know, has more reason to set up a school/base thing on Tatooine than Jakku. and again, the moisture vaporator thing looks soo Tatooine esque that I can't help but think that the whole Kylo/village/burning/luke thing would make more sense set on Tatooine than Jakku. But as I said, it was wild speculation on my part and I might be missing crucial information.

I said this some time after the trailer was out. It's pretty clear, in my opinion, that JJ is just playing with us. In the first teaser we saw what we saw in those leaked concept arts: the sand planet, the lightsaber, Stormtrooper Finn, etc. And in the last teaser, we saw what we read in the rumors.

But you are basing the assumption on the fact that Mark Hamill was shooting his scenes in the same set as the village. But that's not the case.
We know for a fact by looking at the behind the scenes photo, that it's a different set. That is all we know. There are no buildings in that set as far as we know.
Both feature sand and both sets were next to each other. That's where the similarities stop.
They don't have to be the same planet.

I think it's simply smart marketing. He is not showing anything we didn't know about. Down to the "Chewie, we are home" line. This was reported by SWU some time ago. We could easily add links to the reports related to every shot in every trailer.

Yeah I probably should have put this part in brackets or something, it was just a wild tangent, like 'What if? Luke is actually on Tatooine, and so is Klyo looking for him! here are some possibilities' It wasn't based on anything other than me noticing a few things I thought made it possible, The real point of my post was to show the visual similarities between the Kylo 'attack' shots and the Luke by the fire shots, as in, what if they are the same place? that was the main point of my post the idea 'What if its Tatooine!' was just a tangent. Still it seems unlikely that it would be JAkku he's based on considering the whole galaxy is looking for him and Rey and the falcon are seemingly on Jakku. so He plausibly is on another planet, and a sandy planet at that.

Basically, JJ went with the old adage: KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE.
He premiered the teaser to a roomful of super-fans who've been reading SW message boards. And EVERY SINGLE SHOT can be linked to a previous rumor.
So far, this marketing campaign has been absolutely brilliant. Bravo.

Working on it...EVERY SINGLE SHOT has been mentioned....the sad R2, the parade grounds, the bloody helmet, the burning village, Luke saber and 'Rose'...
Jesus, he even showed a promo shot of Finn holding Poe's jacket in the desert.....BRILLIANT.

i agree. its important to separate fact from speculation. lately the lines have been blurred. the more attention one theory gets, the more weight it seems to carry before the facts have been verified.
