If you ask me, it's simply two different sets on Pinewood's outdoor lot.
The backdrop to the "Luke" scene in the trailer is pretty unique - lots of weird, almost spherical boulders... Doesn't look like Jakku to me.
I's say the small set with Artoo and the "hooded figure" is more likely to have been matched with the plates shot at the Hang En caves...

Luke's right hand is his robot hand. So the fact that we see a normal right hand hand in a BTS photo doesn't mean we'll see that in the movie.

Yeah, there are all kinds of options - they could just be blocking out the scene, it could be a stand-in, we don't know when it would be appropriate for a practical effect or a CGI hand...
Or whether it's just a Jawa with a big human hand. :p

Would you give a funeral pyre to a protocol droid?

Well question for all you film students out there. The set picture is in daylight - the scene is in the nighttime. I know they often put filters on the cameras to film night during the day - would this be the case here?

It's most likely a case of a filter in post-production. Perhaps the scene has a lot of CGI, (like Luke's right hand/the embers), so the extra light comes in handy for that work.

I work in CGI, adding additional lighting and have the reallife characters influenced by these is extremly difficult. It makes no sense at all. The light from the fire and the backlight had to exist when the scene was shot.

This would seem to be a very smart move, and utterly believable too. It's also a possibility that some of the leaks may have been "on purpose", but then again I'm a cynical ba$tard. You guys [and gals] know it.

    Interesting find....

Could it be that Luke was on Jakku when his "Academy" was attacked by the forces of evil....

    OR.... or.....

Let me spring back the theory I brought up MANY MANY...MANY months ago...

Luke leaves in exile because he believes his family was destroyed.

After ROTJ, Luke goes into living as a simple farmer, far from war, far from everyone, including Leia and his friends.

He lives as a farmer, has a family... and a wife with an unborn child.

The village is attacked, everyone is dead.... but the unborn child... that is unknown to Luke.

The child is Rey... Rey Skywalker. She survived the massacre and was raised by natives from the area.

Luke goes into exile and blames himself for what happened.

The scene from the trailer is from the aftermath of the massacre... not of a new Jedi Academy... but of Luke's family.

Too much rehash from the first six films here I fear. And I think the last thing Luke would ever want to be is a farmer. ;-)

I thought it was common knowledge by now it's from the flashback scene. Before the trailer was released MSW already said that there was a flashback scene involving Luke and in it there's a part where he says goodbye to R2 after a load of blast goes down. In the trailer there's fire and embers everywhere and Luke puts his hand on R2 rather solemnly as if to say bye.. What more do people want? and why for the love of god are people comparing hands of Mark Hamill to the one in the picture?.. All hands look very much the same.. You know, 5 fingers and stuff. What exactly are you looking for? You'd need bloody fingerprints to try and find evidence from their hands... Plus if it's from a flashback sequence then they'd use a different actor anyway as they'd want somebody to have the same build as Mark Hamill was during ROTJ for continuity which you can tell is what has happened because, lo and behold, the Luke Skywalker in the trailer is not the build of 2014/2015 Mark Hamill.

I personally believe Luke's Jedi academy is on Tatooine. It makes sense from a character and historical perspective. Maybe even based at Obi Wan's old homestead. Luke leaves on a mission. The Seven, who I think might be some remaining inquisitors who essentially worship Vader and are working for the new Sith lord codenamed Uber, destroy the school and kill everyone. Almost everyone. Rose escapes with Kira Rey, but The Seven abduct Kylo Ren knowing he's the grandson of Vader, then brainwashing him and training him to be a new Sith warrior, possibly even believing he's Vader reincarnated. Kira becomes simply Rey and lives in solitude on Jakku, sort of in protective isolation, or maybe in self selected isolation, because it's a backwater to the backwater.

MAYBE they are using the same location, but dressed differently, for both Jakku and Tatooine. Or maybe the sets we assumed were Jakky are in fact the academy on Tatooine.

    Or maybe I'm completely wrong.

I'm beginning to think that Luke is the one who sneaks up behind Kylo in the second teaser, which elicits his force push/grab. I know it goes against MSW but seeing Luke with R2 in the teaser (probably on Jakku) and what other person/thing would get this type of reaction from Kylo and the stormtroopers? It doesn't make sense but I think Luke goes to rescue the villages and gets in a confrontation with Kylo, before Kylo flees back to his ship and his prized possession, Vader's mask, for guidance.

Please, feel free to call me crazy.

For what it's worth, you're correct...they are Leia's hands. I was told directly that they are. :)

Not directly. This was said to me: "Those are Leia's hands" (to my face) by a LFL employee.
