For Mark Hamill to say in interviews that he feels that the old cast is really handing the story off to the new cast makes it seem as though they are the supporting roles of the movie. This sounds similar to how veteran actors like Peter Cushing and Alec Guinness were supporting a relatively unknown group of young adults in a New Hope (Hamill, Fisher, Ford).

Luke has always skirted the dark side. Sidious told him that as soon as he took his saber and tried to strike him down, his journey towards the dark side would be complete. He nearly killed Darth Vader and only at the last moment realized that he was losing hope of becoming a Jedi (in the sense that old Yoda told him - Confront Vader and then a Jedi will you be).

After the big Endor celebration it left the audience with the sense that "the rebels won!" and it would be hard to imagine a rebellion where Luke isn't heavily involved with Leia.

Either something catastrophic happened to separate Luke from Leia or Luke feels that he must do what he is doing in order to protect those he loves (his anakin like weakness).

Yoda commanded Luke to pass on what you have learned - the last of the Jedi is Luke - so previous fiction has always pointed towards Luke starting an Academy to train Jedi. But there has also be fiction where Luke skirts a little too close to the dark side and the dark side dominate his destiny.

But from what we've seen of Hamill in TFA, he is being setup as the mentor. The quote of "you have that power too" clearly sets him up as the Obi wan of this series.

It is about him passing on what he has learned to a new generation. With so many repeating themes in Star Wars, the story ultimately has to be about family and redemption. This is the Skywalker story plain and simple. Family trumps evil.

No matter how much screen time Luke has in TFA, he will most likely be the same Luke he has been leading up to from ANH through ROTJ. The emotional Jedi who has found a balance between his emotions and love for friends and family and the ideals of the Jedi order. He has stood up to one of the greatest evils in the galaxy and won. If he is willing to die to Sidious in order to become a Jedi, then I think it would be an insult for him to be tripped up by some minor evil and become a shady hobo.

Tortured? Sure. Luke has always been tortured in his heart. But he is the hero and should remain so.

To make a drastic departure from what the previous 3 films has setup his character to be (a hero) would be very odd and not go over well with mainstream audiences IMHO.

He's the same old sneaky Luke from ROTJ. Comes and goes. Protects his friends. Always on his own for the most part. Now he just has to train Rey in the ways of the Force and he can fulfill that goal that Yoda gave him on his deathbed.

Has any information leaked out about what was shot during pickups and reshoots for this film? Is it possible that we could get a little extra bit with Luke in an after-credits scene or something?

It's weird we haven't heard anything about Threepio's role. Maybe the after-credits scene will just be C-3PO sitting on a log on Endor going, "I can't believe they just left me here..." lol

Well we know that Luke's in at least this scene (shown in second trailer right when we hear Luke say "I have it").

What strikes me about this scene is it sure feels like another funeral. R2 is clearly making noise and Luke puts his hand on R2 almost as if to comfort him and then bows his head looking down. That sure looks sad. Has R2 been with Luke this whole time? Is this one of those rumored flashbacks? Is this Luke hiding out and comforting R2 because they are alone?

If the rumors that Han dies in TFA are true... then it sure seems pretty odd that Luke isn't there to save him. I mean - the entire reason he stopped his training was to go to Bespin to try to save them! He could see emotions in the future that led him to believe they were in danger and rushed off to see them!

If Han does die in TFA then this scene is either Luke at the funeral pyre or Luke sensing that Han has died (which would be interesting because why didn't he go try to save him again?)

Either way, this is a sad moment - or why else bow the head? Could be loneliness. Could be. But it could be something much more sad.

I wondered if this was a flashback to the destruction of his "academy." The existence, and then destruction of this thing has been speculated here and there, and I don't know if I'm on board with it or not. But this shot made me believe that speculation might just be correct.

All that stuff about we haven't seen any photos and reports of Mark on set besides Skellig Michael doesn't prove a thing. We haven't seen any setphotos and Setreports of Ford (besides the one about his injury) and Carrie either, still that doesn't prove a thing either. Everything we have seen and heard is unofficial besides the trailer rumors and the photos yesterday May 4, so people take the Mark only has one scene with a big grain of salt.

If that's the case, why aren't Leia and Chewie (and others) there? You could argue Leia is off planet, but Chewie would absolutely be there.

I didn't read all the topic posts and I rarely visit MSW.
I don't track the rumors and crazy hype, .
With TFA and the new spin offs there's a ton of rumors and dumb #%€+ too.
Really, I keep thinking Luke might be in a early first act scene(the everything is bright and sunny phase), then a tragic event or First Order attack will rip everyone apart. Luke will skate out then the plot-story will move 10-20 years forward. Luke will be bitter or angry but not crazy or psycho.
Han Solo might die in the climax but I don't think the Falcon will be destroyed. Chewie (chewie) will rebound and Poe will take the ship.
I'd add that force ghost Yoda will have a brief scene with a depressed Luke & relay EP8 story details.

Because this is a closeup shot of Luke and R2 i think. Leia and Chewie could also be there, but also could be dead.

I don´t get it... where is Luke during the whole film? Is nobody looking for him? Why is he missing? And why come out all of the sudden at the end? Smells like BS. If Abrams makes Luke only in the film for a few seconds... then guess what? He won´t direct or produce anything star wars, ever again.

    Edit:
I really doubt Luke is in the film for only a few seconds... they won´t risk the film bombing.

Luke could be the one who trains Rey to be a jedi, she being his daughter she has force power.
Then she wants revenge, because kylo killed Han.

That still doesn't answer the question, where is Luke and why does he come out only at the end?

Can you imagine the word-of-mouth after the first weekend if Luke is barely in the movie? It could cost Disney hundreds of millions. I have a hard time seeing execs being OK with it.

It is pretty simple, there is no question to answer because until now it is just a stupid lame rumor with no proof of anything. And just because a bunch of people choose to believe it doesnt make it true. So until you have seen the movie and have proof, there is no question to ask for something that doesnt excist.
