Rose Tico in Ep 9

I'll say this about Rose - in TLJ she's very much a supporting character and giving her her own subplot won't really be too successful, unless she goes through some heavy character development. However, in ST we have characters whose stories are way more important than Rose's: Rey, Finn amd Kylo. Take a look at RotJ - Lando got himself his own subplot with attack on the second Death Star but it's not really compelling because it doesn't give his character any event that would challenge his personality, just attacking the bad guys cause they're bad. Too be honest, every subplot in RotJ isn't really compelling except for Luke-Vader drama, but that's a topic for a different discussion. What I'm trying to say is - keep Rose a secondary character and keep the main quartet of protagonists (Rey, Finn, Poe and Rose) together as much as possible - this way you keep the focus of the story tight and not risk making only one plotline interesting.

 

RotJ is a pretty weak film that's kept afloat by Luke/Vader.

There simply isn't time to expand Rose's character. This trilogy is already pretty crowded and there's a lot of work to be done finishing this story. I doubt expanding Rose character (who I like) is going to be a priority. It shouldn't be.

 

I'm really looking forward to seeing what KMT & Rose does in Episode IX. I love that we have such a commoner character fighting with the larger-than-life heroes; she's the heart of the Resistance

 

awww nertz. i dunno why you deleted your very eloquent post, but even though i'm among the crowd who thinks they could have tightened up the script and not lost much without her (let others carry the weight), i agree whole-heartedly with everything you had said. and i hope she lands in a good place in ix. : D

I never really hd an issue with this character except for the fact she doesn't really have anything important to do. I don't want to be an armchair director here, but what they should have done was made her the codebreaker they needed in VIII; it would have opened up a lot more opportunities for her character development IMO. I don't know where they go with her from here.

 

Rose's role in TLJ was to steer Finn into the right direction. Now with that out of the way, she can have her own little subplot about being/becoming a chief mechanic or she can go on missions with Finn and Poe. Like with everything else on Episode IX, she could go anywhere.

 

We dont look up to "regular" people. We look up to the person who scores 3 goals a game or runs the 100m dash in 9.9 seconds. This is y Rose "fails".

 

I look up to friends, family, and people who aren't super heroes. Rose saved Finn (a hero to many) from needlessly killing himself.

RJ did a good job of developing Rose's character. Her connection with her sister and how she grew up. Rose represents why the First Order is evil and why the fight is just. This is why her arc with Finn was important because DJ presented the cynical view that picking a side is dumb ("don't join"). I'm excited to see what JJ does with her in Episode IX. I don't think there's a romance there, but I understand why she idolized Finn.

 

pretty sure Rose's role as a Resistance fighter is much more important and already makes her more than just a regular person.
it's fine to love sports heroes or guitar heroes or whatever, but actually saving lives seems a bit more heroic than just scoring goals or being able to run fast.

 

Personally, I really liked Rose in Ep8. I kind of equate her to Lando's importance in ESB, only she didn't go turncoat on the main characters.

She was a secondary character (only in that she wasn't introduced until TLJ) and served a purpose in revealing what Finn couldn't/wouldn't see. I didn't get an SJW vibe from it. She was just a chick who had a soft spot for space horses. My daughter is 24 and still has a soft spot for horses, space and otherwise.

I won't go on to say that I really need to see what happens next with her, but it would be odd if she just disappeared. That would be an odd choice considering the 'fandom' always begs to see how a character dies/ends. It's kind of important apparently among some......I'm not one, but I get it.

Hell.....most fans would probably be eager to see her die on screen. Eager. Eager to see it, and to see it happen soon!!!

Call me 'the guy who doesn't get it', but I thought Rose was fine. She's fine. Her character was fine. Rose Tico was a fine addition to the galaxy far far away.

It feels like some stupid internet meme that goes around. Folks HATE Rose Tico because they.....well they just should.

 

Lando was the designated emergency scoundrel in case Ford didn't come back.

 

If you can't learn something even from those you see as below your station it is probably because of a resistance to paying attention and maybe foolish arrogance.


Rose wasn't being a mentor in an area of expertise that is credentialed or ranked.


How to be regular person committed to a bigger than life cause as well as the rot at the root that can only be seen from the grounds eye viewpoint.

To consider the small picture along with the large, the suffering of "the least of these".


What Finn needed to stop running and to turn and dig in his heels not for himself not for someone but fir the cause wasn't something he could get from Luke, Leia, Poe, Maz, Rey, Holdo, or even Han Solo if he were around that he got from Rose and DJ because they are the regular folk we seldom get more than a line from.


Everyone we know has been in the mix at the highest levels for decades or is a special of some sort so they are not in positions to give the common person's perspective anymore, if ever.


Finn has never had that, he was indoctrinated effectively at birth. He has no individual context to see galatic events through or normal life experience.


Not that I think Finn is just a regular person, regular doesn't break their own stormtrooper conditioning or even slow down a trained force user wielding a lightsaber (even a seriously wounded one).

However, he has to go through that path to have the empathy necessary to grow into his own. Those wheels have to turn to be a complete person much less a competent leader of people even if facing that melts a few snowfkakes.

 

That logic makes no sense... especially considering the upbringings of Luke and Anakin. They were nobodies who rose to prominence in the galaxy. We have to be able to relate to are heroes.

When I first saw images of Rose I thought she looked neat and was excited to meet the new character. I really liked the actress...but the her character just seemed kind of "there" in Ep 8 and suffered from some writing issues.
The character had some major flaws and some cringeworthy lines (not the poor actress's fault) but I don't get her being compared to/on the same level as Jar Jar Binks . She wasn't that bad to me, just kind of forgettable and wasted potential with screen time that was needed to build the relationships of the existing new characters who barely go to know each other in the previous installment.

On to Ep. 9

That being said, I hope J.J. gives her more of a personality and purpose with the right amount of screen time (don't force it in fan's faces as a finger to haters...instead work on surprising them by developing the character). I like the animal lover aspect of Rose and think they should emphasize that angle. I think they should give her a cute alien sugar glider type pet or something. And the actress is beautiful, let her wear something besides a space potato sack lol.

 

i didn't like her costume either.
it was practical for her job with the Resistance, but she looked really great in the FO uniform! : D

 

She does look a lot cooler and more iconic in that! She actual looks like a villain bad*ss.

In Ep. 9, I'm also curious about how Finn is going to feel about Rose. I guess it depends on how much of a time jump we're talking, but he seemed kind of confused after their interaction on Crait. I wonder if he will be angry with her about taking away his sacrifice moment or if he was romantically interested in her at all. The writing was kind of funky on that front. I can't quite figure out any of the romances in the ST.

 

my feeling on the romance is that Finn hadn't considered it, so her kiss surprised him, but afterward, he warmed to the idea (taking care of her on the Falcon).
i don't see him being angry with her for saving his life.

 

I for my part would be okay if they were saving up the romance between those two for a comic.
